Assembling and Caring for the Attributes Learning Cards Set
Sort the Cards according to attribute and file them in the
Storage Box. Before using the Attributes Learning Cards Set,
make copies of this Really Good Stuff® Activity Guide and file
the pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it from
our Web site at www.reallygoodstuff.com. Be sure to use a dry
erase marker when writing on the Attribute Cards to preserve
their Write Again® wipe-off laminate surface.
Introducing the Attributes Learning Cards Set
Introduce one category of Attribute Cards at a time. Using small
magnets or poster putty, hang the six Cards in one category on
your classroom whiteboard, with the photograph-only side showing,
where students will be able to see and interact with them easily.
The Cards fall into these six main categories: Fruits, animals,
things at home, people, things at school, and shapes. Point to
the object on each of the Cards and have students say the word
for that object. Then explain that the pictures all belong to a
group of things with something in common, meaning they share
an attribute.
Turn the Cards over one at a time. Have students say the words
on the back of the Card aloud. Show students the outlines of
the words. Using a dry erase marker, trace the object. Model how
they are to use these Cards to learn how to write the words: Trace
your finger along each letter outline, then use a dry erase marker
to trace the letters as you say each letter aloud, then say the
whole word. After you have reviewed all six Cards, repeat the
attribute name and ask students to repeat it. Then show
students how to erase each Card using a soft cloth or tissue.
Attributes Grab Bag Sort
Place the Attribute Cards in a handled shopping bag. Have
students come up to the classroom whiteboard one at a time
and do the following:
1. Take a Card from the bag.
2. Name the object on the Card.
3. Name the attribute group the object is part of. They can turn
the Card over to check the group.
4. Attach the Card (tracing side up) to the board using magnets
or poster putty with the other Cards in its attribute group.
5. Use a dry erase marker to trace the object and word, or for
additional practice, to write the word directly on the
whiteboard.
After all of the Cards have been sorted, have students brainstorm
other items that could belong to each group.
Individual Attribute Sorting
Place the Attribute Cards in a center. Have students draw
the Cards out of the Storage Box one at a time and sort them
according to attribute. After they have sorted the Cards, direct
students to use a dry erase marker to trace the objects and
words on the backs of the Cards. When they are done, instruct
students to erase the Cards and then return them to the
Storage Box.
Color Sorting
Place the Attribute Cards into a handled shopping bag. Have
students draw the Cards out of the bag one at a time and sort
them according to color. After they have sorted the Cards, direct
students to use a dry erase marker to trace the objects and
words on the backs of the Cards.
Trace, Then Write
Create a word-writing center: Place the Storage Box with the
Cards, a dry erase marker, a portable whiteboard, and a soft cloth
or tissue in a zippered plastic bag in your writing center or on a
shelf so that students can take it to their seat. Explain that
students are to take a Card from the Storage Box, turn the
Card to the tracing side, trace the words with a finger, use the

used magazines and newspapers to make cards for these new
words. As an added challenge, have students make cards for
objects that fit into the color categories as well.
Other Attributes
Copy and distribute the Card Pattern Reproducible. Brainstorm
with students other attribute groups that objects can belong
to and the objects that are in them. During the brainstorm,
write each attribute name on your classroom whiteboard, then
write the words for the additional objects under the attribute
