Vice President Report: September to May 2016
My role in the BCPTA is prepare and arrange the meetings and assist on the day of
our workshops.
We have 7 Board meetings from September to June. Two weeks before each
meeting I email a request for agenda items, ask for board members to confirm
attendance and remind board members of the date. I prepare the agenda and send it
out to the members one week before the meeting and send another reminder to
confirm attendance. On the day of the meeting I set up the space, shop for the
snacks and prepare them.
At the workshops you will see me at the sign in table at the beginning and the end of
the day and doing anything else that needs to be done.

Education Committee Report for the period of 2015 to 2016:
Committee members are Tanya Yakovchuk (Director), Rowena Au, Janet Waines
(Play Café Organizer), Brianna Cambell and Carly Watson.
This past educational year we have welcomed presenters from local British
Columbia and from the US. Our educational events covered variety of play therapy
topics and therapeutic frameworks in play therapy.
It has been a very successful year for the committee. The association is growing in
numbers and we are welcoming new participants at our workshops each time this
past year. Since we are members-driven organization, we are always trying our best
to offer our training events most accessible and affordable to our members.
This past year, we offered 5 (five) workshops and 2 (two) play café events.
Altogether, we offered 40 (forty) hours of play therapy training.
On September 19th 2015 we welcomed Mary Anne Paré who did a presentation on
“What happened?” Play Therapy for Traumatic Family Loss. The workshop took place
at the Italian Cultural Centre in Vancouver and it was very well attended.
On October 24th 2015 BCPTA invited Monica Bhatara to do a presentation titled
Working with Children, Youth and All My Relations Using Aboriginal FocusingOriented Therapy in the Play Therapy Room. The members’ feedback for this
workshop, especially the uniqueness of the therapeutic approach that was
presented was very positive. This workshop was also offered in Vancouver.
Following Monica Bhatara’s presentation, on November 20th we offered a play café
with Johanna Simmons. She did a presentation on Tips for Starting your Private
Practice.
On February 26th and 27th of 2016, we offered a 2-day presentation with Dr. Jennifer Shaw
from Dr. Eliana Gills Institute. Dr. Shaw did a presentation on Sexually Abused Children and
Youth: Understanding the Developmental Impact and Facilitating Recovery with Play Therapy.
The training was offered in the city of New Westminster. The participants were coming
from all around British Columbia just for this workshop.
With the great support from the BCPTA members who reside on Vancouver Island,
BCPTA was able to offer Mary Anne’s fall workshop in Nanaimo. She presented on
April 2nd 2016. The local volunteers planned the training day the way it had time in
the morning for local professionals to get together to socialize with each other, while
the afternoon they spent time in training with Mary Anne Paré.
On April 8th 2016 BCPTA invited an art therapist Josy Valero-Frias to do a play café
on Art Therapy Techniques and Process. The event was attended to its maximum
capacity of 30 participants. The feedback from those who attended the workshop
was such that BCPTA is planning on possibly offering similar presentation on
Vancouver Island within the next year.
We ended our educational year with Lisa Dion and her 2-day presentation on The
New Frontier: An Introduction to Synergetic Play Therapy. Her training took place on
May 27th and 28th of this year.
Currently, the committee has already pre-planned the educational events for the
upcoming year. The presenters for the next calendar year are: Marie-Jose Dhaese,
Joani Mortenson, John Allan, Mary Anne Pare, Brenda Weinberg and many more.
BCPTA along with CAST (Canadian Association for Sandplay Therapy) is organizing
our 2nd time around conference on Making Connections in Play and Therapy.
I also want to genuinely thank all my colleagues on the committee for all their time
and great work they do for the members.

2015 – 2016 Play Cafés
In November 2015 Johanna Simmons presented helpful “Tips for Starting your
Private Practice”. We learned about Art Therapy techniques and process from Josy
Valero-Frias at the April 2016 Play Café. Each of these was fully attended, with
approximately 30 people.
On September 30, 2016 the first Play Café to be held south of the Fraser river will be
held in Surrey. Dr. Judith Bertoia is presenting a Sampling of Favourite Play Therapy
Techniques.
We welcome suggestions for future speakers and topics.

Membership 2015/16
The 2015/16 BCPTA membership had another successful year! We have a total of
207 members to close off of the year. We continue to encourage our members to
spread the word about our amazing organization and get friends and colleagues
involved!
There have been some changes to our website this year and we are hopeful that this
will make it easier to renew membership online and to register for upcoming events
in the 2016/2017 year. I appreciate your patience as we have been dealing with the
changes and I hope that everyone has had the opportunity to look at the new site. As
usual, membership will run June1, 2016-May31, 2017. Please renew your
membership in June so that you get to have the full benefit of receiving information
about upcoming events and other perks(such as being able to continue to have your
private practice information listed on the BCPTA website). Please remember to
renew your membership and encourage others to do the same. We again have great
offers for our members and a great student price. We look forward to increasing our
membership numbers this year and will continue to offer educational and
networking opportunities in our community. We do encourage members to renew
online but we do still offer manual renewal.
For more information on the upcoming education opportunities or to renew your
membership please visit us online.

Recording Secretary’s Report 2015-2016
The 2015-16 Recording Secretary role involved recording minutes at Board
meetings, setting up a new Canada post mailbox, and retrieving and forwarding
BCPTA mail correspondence to various board members.
Board meetings
Since last year’s AGM, seven Board meetings have been held:
 2015: June 10, September 16, November 4, December 9
 2016: February 3, April 6, May 11
The board is grateful to Anna Aquila for hosting us in her building’s conference
room, and to Anna Bardi for graciously offering her home for the June and December
meetings.
In the position of Secretary, I attended five of the seven regularly scheduled Board
meetings, and recorded, distributed, and stored minutes of the meetings. Thank you
to Anna Bardi for taking the minutes when I was absent.
Mail correspondence:
Mail collected from our Canada Post mailbox was distributed to our President,
Treasurer, and Education committee members (Advertising).
Our new Canada Post mailbox seems to be providing our Association and members
with a more efficient delivery of non-electronic mail items. Our new address is PO
Box 19009 4th Avenue Post Office, Vancouver, BC, V6K 4R8

Corresponding Secretary Report 2015/16
My role is to reply directly to general inquiries and forward other emails to the
appropriate BCPTA board member. We have received a lot of emails since the
beginning of the 2015/2016 membership year in following areas:
 Website issues
 Membership
 Play Therapy
 Advertising
 Certification
 BCPTA workshops
 BCPTA Newsletter
 Receipts
 Hotel accommodations
 Private practice directory
 Syrian support
 Miscellaneous
As a board, we decided to eliminate our cell phone as a method of communication,
as it was often quicker to respond to inquiries by email or through the website.

Communication Report 2015/16
This year the BCPTA, E-Newsletter, “Imprints of Play” was published three times.
“Feature Playroom” has been popular; several members have submitted write ups
and pictures of their play therapy space.
In the Spring edition, we added a new segment called “Favorite Playroom Item” and
would like to continue to add various toys and items in this section and how they
are used in your practice. If you have a favorite item, please feel free to submit it to
us for publication.
Our Facebook page grew significantly this year. We have approximately 258 people
following the BCPTA Facebook page. Play therapy related articles and BCPTA
events were regularly shared throughout the year.
Advertising continued to be a popular way for the therapeutic community to
promote events. E-Blasts were sent out throughout the year from a variety of
individuals and agencies.
All BCPTA members are encouraged to get involved and to submit to the enewsletter. Please share your thoughts and feedback to help us make the next issue
more relevant and interesting.
