ETSI TC BRAN Ankara, 6-7. May 2010 Milan Zoric Centre for Testing and Interoperability (CTI) [email protected] © ETSI 2010. All rights reserved Turk Telekom - ETSI Workshop © ETSI 2010 Introduction The peak of BRAN activity is in the past Current activities Some activity in the HiperMAN area Some activity towards regulation in wireless access domain Interesting to learn from Turk Telekom - ETSI Workshop © ETSI 2010 2 ETSI BRAN (Broadband Radio Access Networks) Chairman: Bernd Friedrichs (Marconi) HiperLAN/2 (now closed) HiperAccess (now closed) HiperMAN (High Performance LAN) (High Performance Access) (High Performance MAN) Wireless LAN at 5 GHz, connection-based, OFDM, 54 Mbps, QoS Fixed broadband wireless PMP system above 11 GHz, single carrier, 120 Mbps Fixed broadband wireless PMP system below 11 GHz, OFDM, IP-optimized PHY PHY PHY DLC DLC DLC CL CL Profiles etc. Testing MIB Regulatory Competence Group Testing Spectrum regulatory issues, Harmonized Standards 3 Regulatory Competence Group Achieved a number of harmonized standards Harmonize standard regulate the use of broadband wireless access devices in Europe Part of the work needs to address the same for IMT-Advanced family of systems To ensure balanced treatment of IMT-Advanced family technologies, this work will be continued in a joint group Turk Telekom - ETSI Workshop © ETSI 2010 4 Global Wireless Standards IEEE 802 ETSI WAN WiMAX* WiFi* IEEE 802.16 WirelessMAN IEEE 802.11 WirelessLAN IEEE 802.15 Bluetooth * UMTS, LTE (GSM) MAN HiperMAN & HiperAccess LAN HiperLAN/2 PAN ETSI BRAN Industry fora for promotion & certification 5 HiperLAN2 In best day well over 100 delegated at each meeting Many big ETSI member companies contributing to the standard However, many of them also contributed to IEEE802.11 specifications HiperLAN2 standard included very advanced features and superiour quality of service Initial IEEE802.11 specs much less ambitious When HiperLAN2 standard was completed, IEEE802.11 products were already getting traction in the market At that point some big companies decided not to market HiperLAN2 Lessons: Superior technologies do not always win Window of opportunity is limited Turk Telekom - ETSI Workshop © ETSI 2010 6 Global Wireless Standards IEEE 802 ETSI WAN WiMAX* WiFi* IEEE 802.16 WirelessMAN IEEE 802.11 WirelessLAN IEEE 802.15 Bluetooth * UMTS, LTE (GSM) MAN HiperMAN & HiperAccess LAN HiperLAN/2 PAN ETSI BRAN Industry fora for promotion & certification 7 HiperAccess (above 11GHz) Standards successfully completed Market for systems above 11 GHz limited, equipment expensive because of high frequencies Only one company implemented the standard The company was bought by another company Profit margins were better with proprietary systems Lessons: Predicting market opportunities several years ahead is not always easy Turk Telekom - ETSI Workshop © ETSI 2010 8 Mutual Influence HiperMAN - IEEE802.16 Source: Mariana Goldhamer, ITU-APT Seminar on BWA, Busan, Korea, Sept. 2004 9 Summary of Main Competence Protocol test suite Contribs to air interface base specs Define regulatory requirements Marketing and promotion Certification Network interface specs Air interface base specs Mobility extension Management specs 10 ETSI-WiMAX Co-operation agreement Co-operation Agreement signed in 2005 Joint work between ETSI Technical Committee BRAN and WiMAX Forum Covered by BRAN Work Items Each year the agreement is amended with new Work Items Joint projects Report to both ETSI BRAN and WiMAX Forum Are funded equally by ETSI and WiMAX Forum Documents respect ETSI drafting rules and are published by ETSI Copyright notice of ETSI and WiMAX Forum WiMAX Forum Logo added to the standard ETSI logo 11 The Co-operation results HiperMAN and IEEE802.16-2004 harmonized ETSI has delivered 500+ test cases in TTCN-3, thus completing all tests selected at the time for certification by WiMAX Forum. TTCN releases were made every two weeks Efficient integration and validation environment was set up Several on-line databases set up for reporting and tracking problems in validation More then 2000 problems recorded, average resolution time 9 days Validated test cases used by WiMAX nominated certification laboratories. The co-operation agreement expired and was not renewed WiMAX is continuing on their own 12 HiperMAN Standardized some features that were later embraced by industry and included in IEEE802.16 specs Developed test specifications that are the basis of industry certification (controlled by WiMAX Forum) Lessons: Member companies are probably rather satisfied with what they achieved for themselves Turk Telekom - ETSI Workshop © ETSI 2010 13 THANK YOU!
