Introduction
1.1
Background
The GCSE and A-Level examinations are a critical step in a young person’s education. Balancing
the pressure of academic work with attendance at Air Cadets in the months that lead up to the
GCSEs and A-Levels has been identified as one of the main reasons cadets leave at this point in
their lives. Consequently, I am directing the Squadron to offer its cadets a minimum 4 month leave
of absence in the period immediately prior to GCSE and A-Level exams.
1.2
Study leave
Study leave is available to Cadets during their GCSE and A-Level exam periods. This leave period
is to in no way affect the cadet’s opportunity to be both promoted and afforded other opportunities
such as flying, gliding, shooting and camps, if affected cadets observe the following condition.
To be consistently fair through this peiod, each cadet has to attend a minimum of one parade night
per month. For the cadet this is an option they can choose or not. Cadets that choose not to attend
once per month or fail to attend their pre-arranged session without valid reason will have their
progress paused and may have opportunities withheld during their study leave.
Cadets must inform Sqn COs of their intentions in advance.
1.3
Alternative study arrangements
Cadets not wishing to take study leave may wish to pause their cadet academic studies in order to
concentrate on school studies. In order to permit such study without forcing the Cadet to remain at
home, private study sessions may be possible at the Squadron Headquarters.
Cadets wishing to study on Squadron are to discuss their requirements with the Officer
Commanding and Training Officer in the first instance.
1.4
Return to Squadron following study leave
On return to Squadron, Cadets will undertake a return programme focused on leadership,
identifying courses now available to the cadet i.e. Gold DofE, MOI course, FA Course, Range
Coaching Course etc. A bespoke return programme may be written by the Training Officer in
conjunction with the affected Cadet, depending on their current achievements and future
aspirations.
