Gillan House Surgery Newsletter ISSUE 10 May 2017 Welcome Report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) David Burrowes MP meets our PPG Making the most of New Technology PPG members drop in at Reception Join our Patient Participation Group (PPG) Who’s Who at Gillan House Surgery? Gillan House Surgery Opening Hours Welcome to the May edition of Gillan House Surgery’s Newsletter. As summer approaches we hope you are enjoying the lighter evenings and warmer weather. Report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) Six months after the inspection of Gillan House Surgery the CQC published its report on 23 February 2017. The overall rating we received was “Good”. Although patient feedback demonstrates that Gillan House provides an outstanding service the inspectors could not find it in themselves to be more generous. But as only 3% of GP Practices are judged to be “Outstanding” we can still be very proud of our achievements. The full CQC report can be found on either our own web-site or at www.cqc.org.uk. David Burrowes MP meets our PPG Although a General Election had already been called we were pleased that David Burrowes MP was able to join the April meeting of our PPG. See the photograph above. There was a lively discussion about NHS funding and other topical issues such as the move towards large heath centres (and away from GP practices such as Gillan House); the privatisation of the NHS; the current plans to reduce patient access to hearings aids, hernia operations, and knee replacements; and the increasing bureaucracy of Enfield Clinical Commissioning Group arising from the Sustainability and Transformation Plans. The Minutes of the April PPG meeting can be found on our website or by enquiring at Reception. Making the most of New Technology At Gillan House we encourage our patients to make the best possible use of new technology whether by computer, tablet or mobile phone. We know that some patients may be unfamiliar with these new devices and we would ask them to consider enlisting the help of family or friends. Using new technology can help reduce the increasing pressure on GPs and Practice Staff, and allow them to devote maximum time to the healthcare of patients. For example, it is now possible to make or cancel GP appointments, request repeat prescriptions, and update your address and contact details without needing to contact the Surgery. You can do this using Patient Access which is available either on computer or as an app for a mobile phone. For more information please visit https://patient.info/patient-access. Alternatively there is i-Patient which operates as an app for a mobile phone. For more information please visit https://elife.co.uk/r Also if you have a mobile phone it is now possible to use an approved NHS 111 app to check your symptoms and get accurate, safe, medical advice 24 hours a day. The app analyses billions of symptom combinations to help you decide whether you need to attend A&E, see a GP, or visit a pharmacy to obtain over the counter medication. To download the app to your mobile phone visit www.myhealth.london.nhs.uk/111babylon. In order to take full advantage of these systems you need to be linked to our Surgery’s database. Please contact our Reception and they will provide you with all the information you need to do this. PPG members drop in at Reception Following a trial in January members of PPG will be making further visits to Reception to meet patients and ask them to complete a simple form. Please do not be alarmed if you are approached in this way. The form asks whether, based on your visit that day, you would recommend Gillan House Surgery to your friends and family. All you need to do is place a tick in the appropriate box and insert the date. It is completely anonymous and goes straight to the NHS. There is an opportunity, on the reverse of the form, to make any comments if you so wish. These comments will be read and acted upon if at all possible. Join our Patient Participation Group (PPG) The Gillan House Patient Participation Group (PPG) is made up of patients from a variety of backgrounds who have an interest in the Practice and want to help it by providing practical support and advice. More about the PPG and its Mission Statement can be found on our web-site at: www.gillanhousesurgery.co.uk/ppg.aspx. PPG meets quarterly on a very informal basis and discusses a wide variety of issues many of which appear in this Newsletter. If you think you may be interested in joining our PPG then please ask at Reception or register your interest on our web-site. Who’s Who at Gillan House Surgery?
