NORTHAMPTONSHIRE LOWER SUPER OUTPUT AREAS

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE LOWER SUPER OUTPUT AREAS : COMPARING
THEIR LEVEL OF RELATIVE DEPRIVATION (National Dectile) 2010 AND
2015
The tables below compare the level of relative deprivation of Northamptonshire Lower Super Output Areas
(LSOAs) in the 2010 and 2015 English Indices of Deprivation. There is a table for each of the three
English Indices of Deprivation (IMD, IDACI and IDAOPI).
The table format is copied from the national English Indices of Deprivation 2015 Research Report (page
50), where a national table for the IMD is provided. A link to the national research report can be found in
the Deprivation : Resources section of Northamptonshire Analysis. The DCLG state that the various
versions of the Indices should not be used as a time series , but because there is a broadly consistent
methodology between the Indices, some comparison can be made but only in terms of comparing the
rankings/dectiles at the chosen points in time.
Please note : any change in national dectile does not necessarily represent a change in absolute
deprivation within an individual LSOA. It is possible that a LSOA may have become less deprived in real
terms since the previous index, but more deprived relative to all other LSOAs (if others have improved
more rapidly), or vice versa. In the situation were the absolute levels of deprivation in all areas were
increasing or decreasing at the same rate, the ranks would show no change.
The three tables show the 397 Northamptonshire LSOAs where were included in both the 2010 and the
2015 Indices of English Deprivation and were not affected by the LSOA boundary changes implemented in
2011.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE LOWER SUPER OUTPUT AREAS : COMPARING THEIR
LEVEL OF RELATIVE DEPRIVATION (National Dectile) 2010 AND 2015
The tables list the Northamptonshire LSOAs which have negatively moved by at least two dectiles from the
2010 indices into the 30% most deprived LSOAs in the country in the 2015 Indices. There is a table for each
of the three English Indices of Deprivation (IMD, IDACI and IDAOPI).
The IDACI table includes two additional LSOAs which do not fall within the IDACI dectiles 1, 2 or 3 in 2015.
However, one has made an extreme move of four dectiles and the second has shifted radically for its local
authority.
Please note : any change in national dectile does not necessarily represent a change in absolute deprivation
within an individual LSOA. It is possible that a LSOA may have become less deprived in real terms since the
previous index, but more deprived relative to all other LSOAs (if others have improved more rapidly), or vice
versa. In the situation were the absolute levels of deprivation in all areas were increasing or decreasing at
