Teacher Notes
The Admit Slip is a useful device to activate students’ prior knowledge on a topic before you
actually start the topic. It can provide insights into what students are thinking, misconceptions
they have, etc. It can also help you tailor specific parts of your lesson to address common
themes that may be present in the class (i.e. collect and scan the admit slips prior to beginning
the lesson).
In the career classroom teachers can use this Admit Slip to stimulate student discussion.
Students start by completing their slip individually. Teachers can then pair students and allow
them to share their thinking with one another. Each student should explain to his/her partner
why he/shey thinks each of the factors listed is important. For most students, sharing their
thinking in a two-person partner group is less threatening or anxiety provoking than sharing with
the whole class. In total this should take 5 to 10 minutes to complete.
Teachers could extend this discussion by moving pairs into quad groups. Have each partner
group share their top two factors. After they have discussed the four factors identified, the quad
will select one factor that everyone in the group accepts as the most important factor to consider
(some compromise may be necessary). Teachers could use the Round Robin Discussion
strategy and the “Key Ideas Round Robin – Factors to consider when choosing a career”
BLM, to help organize and facilitate the progression of discussions in this activity.
Each group will select a reporter and the reporter will share with the entire class the factor they
choose as most important and explain the group’s reasoning. This could be extended into a
whole class discussion from which a “Top Three” list of important factors, or a single, most
important factor, could be agreed upon.
Through the discussions, students should come to understand that there are many factors to
consider when choosing a career, all of which are important. Some will be linked to a person’s
personal interests and skills. Others may be associated with future plans the person may have
(e.g., lifestyle goals). And some factors will be more practical in nature (e.g., possibility of
gaining employment, salary, location, etc.). Factors that are important to one person may not be
as important to another person. This is normal as the factors which are deemed important will
align with the person’s career goals. The important point is to ensure the goals are realistic.
