Presentation: Learning Outcome Manager
Learning Outcome Manager (LOM) is a toolset that allows Kaplan to assemble, manage,
and analyze data about student learning outcomes for the purposes of accreditation
review and continued program improvement. By providing organized outcomes at all
learning levels – student, course, department, school and institutional levels – the
Learning Outcome Manager provides a comprehensive picture of learning development
and achievement throughout Kaplan and as part of its Course Level Assessment (CLA)
mission.
In the Author mode, the LOM is now integrated within the KU-ACE (.NExT) learning
platform and is to be used by instructors to view, manage, and assess student
performance against the outcomes of a specific course.
By the end of this presentation, you will be able to
• Demonstrate the integration of the LOM into the Gradebook tool.
• Identify the significance of the LOM as it pertains to Course Level Assessment
(CLA) at Kaplan.
• Apply the use of the LOM to manage course level outcomes, and assess
student’s performance against those outcomes.
Part I: Viewing Outcomes
Within your course, to view as reference the learning outcomes of a course, first choose
Author mode, then from the Course Home navigation tree, choose the Learning
Outcomes link.
There are two areas of interest here – Outcome Management
and Outcome Summary.

First, let’s look at the Outcome Management area.
This shows you all the outcomes that are associated with activities in your course, and
thereby all the things that you will be assessing in your course.
For example, in this sample course, GEL 1.1 – Demonstrate college-level communication
through the composition of the original materials in Standard American English - is
assessed by the activity – Unit 1 Assignment.
Next, let’s look at the Outcome Summary area. The pages in this area provide you with
a variety of views on how your class is doing in terms of assessment. You can view
“details by outcome.”

This shows you a summary of how outcomes are performing across your course. And
from there you can drill down into each outcome to get specific information on its
statistics and which class activity or project it is mapped to.
As well, under Assessment Criteria you are able to view the specific grading rubric for
the particular outcome.

Also in the Outcome Summary area you can view this information by student under the
“details by student” option.
Here you can view a list of all the students and their outcome assessments, as well as
have the ability to access more specific details for each individual student.
There are only two students in this sample course . . . let’s look at the details of each
outcome for Student 1.
Student 1 has already been graded for one of the learning outcomes; the other outcome
has yet to be graded.
Also note, under the Details by Student view, you conveniently have the option to
export an assessment summary as an Excel spreadsheet.

Part II: Grading Outcomes
The Outcome Management and Outcome Summary areas of a course are useful
overviews, but the actual process of assessing class projects based on the course
outcomes happens in the Gradebook. Let’s go there now.
Under the “View Gradebook,” Select Gradebook View area, choose a unit to be graded.
In this example: Unit 1: You Can Do It is chosen, and the Go button selected.
Note, that for the two students in the course, there are currently no grades posted.
Let’s go to the student grading area for the Assignment for Student 1 by clicking on the
star or asterisk under that assignment name.

The Student Detail View appears. Here is where you will grade and comment on the
student’s work as well as the outcomes associated to that particular assignment.
The outcomes for the assignment appear on the left side of the window. As it relates to
the LOM, if the project has been assigned an assessment outcome, it will appear on this
page and can be graded from here. In this example there is one outcome listed. Note
there could be one or more criteria that will need to be assessed for each outcome.
Click the down area to open the outcome details.

To view the details and grading criteria of the outcome, choose the View Rubric option.
To set the student’s score for the outcome, click on the score drop down area, and
choose a criteria. Note when you roll over a grade score the criteria appears as a text
tip. Very handy!

There is also space available in the outcomes grading window to provide comment.
And once a grade is provided a score percentage bar is shown. Here the student
received a 4 out of 5 score.
When you have finished grading a student’s work and the outcomes associated to that
work, you can choose to Share the information with the student right away by choosing
the Share option in the details window and/or selected Save.

Additionally, you easily move to grading the next student in the class by choosing the
green forward arrow in the upper right corner of the window or go back with the left
green arrow.
You can also quickly view a summary of what items and outcomes have been graded for
a particular student by clicking the icons under the student’s name in the top title bar of
the details window. In the screen shot below, the first unit assignment and outcomes
have been graded, indicated in green. Note, in this example there is one other outcome
that has not been graded (in gray) and many assignments.
