2017-18 Boys’ Basketball Coaching Staff
Biography:
Coach Monroe is in his second year as the head
varsity boys’ basketball coach at Saint Ignatius
College Prep. In his first year at Saint Ignatius,
Coach Monroe helped lead the basketball program
to an overall winning percentage of .550, which
was up from .400 the previous year.

Before coming to Saint Ignatius, he spent eight
years as the head sophomore and lead varsity
assistant boys’ basketball coach at Saint Patrick
High School in Chicago. While at St. Pat’s, he
helped guide the varsity to three IHSA Regional
Championships, one IHSA Sectional
Championship, and an overall record of 138-83.
He also led his sophomore teams to an overall
record of 134-61, the 2016 ESCC Conference
Championship, and multiple Thanksgiving and
Christmas tournament championships.
Before coaching and teaching at St. Pat’s, Coach
Monroe spent two years as an assistant boys’
basketball coach at Vernon Hills High School, two
years at Deerfield High School, and one year at Niles West High School. He was
also a student-manager for Dave Leitao at DePaul University and was part of their
2005 Conference USA Championship and NCAA Tournament team. Coach
Monroe also has extensive experience coaching travel basketball, leading Rising
Stars and Full Package teams to four A.A.U. State Championships and several
top ten finishes at the A.A.U. National Tournament. Coach Monroe is an executive
board member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.
Coach Monroe is a Social Studies teacher at Saint Ignatius College Prep. He is
happily married to his wife, Sarah, who is an elementary school assistant
principal.

Biography:
Coach Bob Kriz is entering his 19th season
coaching basketball at Saint Ignatius College
Prep. He has been instrumental in helping build
Saint Ignatius basketball into one of the top
programs in the area over the past two decades.
While serving the Saint Ignatius basketball
program, he has coached a variety of levels. He
has spent time at almost every level in the
basketball program. Coach Kriz has coached
some level of basketball in the past five decades.

He has also served as a baseball coach in the
high school and college ranks. He was head
varsity baseball coach from 1977-1981 and also
from 2004-2007. Coach Kriz served as an
assistant baseball coach from 1996-2003 and has
also coached swimming and diving and girls tennis
at Saint Ignatius. Coach Kriz is also a Dean of
Students at Saint Ignatius.
Biography:
Coach Baker is entering his fourth season coaching
boys’ basketball at Saint Ignatius College Prep. He
has worked with all levels of the program as the
head sophomore coach and a varsity assistant. He
will be a varsity assistant coach for the 2017-18
season. In addition to his coaching duties at Saint
Ignatius, he also has coached and mentored youth
boys for Project Education Plus and the highly
successful Chicago Demons travel basketball
program since 2002.

Before coming to Saint Ignatius, Coach Baker was
the freshman/sophomore boys’ basketball coach
at Von Steuben High School from 2010-2013. He
graduated from Von Steuben in 1995 and played
four years of basketball while there. He went on to
attend Northern Illinois University before
graduating from Taylor Business Institute in 2001.
He is married to his wife, Glinda, and has four
daughters.

Biography:
Coach Shaun Gallagher is entering his tenth
season coaching boys’ basketball at Saint Ignatius
College Prep. During this time, he has served the
program in a variety of capacities. He was the head
sophomore coach and guided the Wolfpack to two
Chicago Catholic League North Championships. As
a varsity assistant coach, he has helped the Pack
win two Catholic League North titles and a
Regional Championship.

Coach Gallagher is an Ignatius graduate (’01) and
former player for the Wolfpack. During his playing
days, Coach Gallagher was an integral part of the
2000 Catholic League North, Regional and
Sectional Championship team, as well as winning
the Lawless Award in 2001 (Catholic League Most
Valuable Senior Player) . He went on to play four
years of college basketball at Loras College and
graduated with a degree in Finance.

Coach Ares Panagoulias is entering his second
season on the Saint Ignatius Wolfpack boys'
basketball staff. He assisted the varsity in a
multitude of ways and introduced advanced
basketball analytics to the program.

In addition to being on the basketball staff, Coach
Panagoulias serves the Ignatius community in a
number of ways, including running the Alumni
Basketball League. Father Caruso recently
honored him with the Alumni Medal for his
contributions. Prior to joining Saint Ignatius, he
was the varsity boys' associate head coach for
four seasons at Saint Clement. While at Saint
Clement, he developed a passion for the use of
basketball statistics and analyses employed by
professional and collegiate level programs in
tracking team and player development. Ares is a
graduate of Saint Ignatius (2007) and the
University of Michigan (2011).

Biography:
Coach Mike Hurley is entering his second season on
the Saint Ignatius Wolfpack boys’ basketball staff. While
serving as an assistant varsity coach, he also
implemented a number of new initiatives to the program
including the program newsletter and hosting the CCYL
Grade School Championships at Ignatius. He will be
acting as the head sophomore coach and varsity
assistant coach for the 2017-18 season.

Prior to joining Saint Ignatius, Coach Hurley was the
head varsity boys' coach for three seasons at Saint
Clement, where he was involved in the program as a
basketball coach for 7 seasons and where he still
remains as the school's Athletic Director. He has been
teaching and instructing basketball to youth players
around the Chicago area for over 10 years, spending
time coaching and administrating camps, clinics and
school teams. Coach Hurley is a graduate of Saint
Ignatius (2007) and Marquette University (2011).

Coach Dudzik is entering his fourth year on the
Saint Ignatius boys’ basketball coaching staff. He
spends time working with various levels of the
basketball program. He will be a sophomore
assistant coach and a varsity assistant coach for
the 2017-18 basketball season.

Before coming to Saint Ignatius, he spent time at
Norwood Park Christian Academy. Coach Dudzik
was the assistant varsity boys’ basketball coach for
two years. During that time frame, he was able to
lead the program to its first Elite Eight appearance
in the State Tournament. Coach Dudzik was also a
freshman assistant girls’ basketball coach at Niles
West High School. He also currently coaches for the
highly respected Chicago Lockdown travel basketball
club.
Rob graduated from Weber High School where he
went on to attend Loyola University.

Biography:
Coach Chapman is entering his first season at
Saint Ignatius. For the past 10 years, Coach
Chapman was the head basketball coach for the
7th and 8th grade boys at the Frances Xavier
Warde School. Coach Chapman’s FXW teams
reached the NCPL/CCYL championship eight
consecutive years, winning championships four
times, and winning seven CCL tournaments. He
previously spent four seasons as the assistant
varsity coach at the Francis W. Parker School.

While in college, Coach Chapman was a
student-manager for the Duke University
basketball team, and later played on the
University of California, Berkeley club team.
He received his undergraduate degree from the
University of California and his law degree from
the Berkeley School of Law. Coach Chapman
played basketball for 4 years at the Latin
School. He is married to Sandy Chapman and
they have two children.

Coach Jim Owens is entering his 18th year
coaching at Saint Ignatius College Prep. He has
coached at many different levels throughout the
basketball program and will now be serving as the
head freshman “A’ coach for the second straight
season. He also assists the varsity in a multitude
of ways.

Coach Owens is a graduate of Saint Ignatius
himself. He has both played and coached in the
Wolfpack basketball program. Coach Owens has
been teaching mathematics and economics at
Saint Ignatius since 1998. Passionate about the
importance of education, Coach Owens holds
several degrees including a bachelor’s in
Economics from the College of the Holy Cross, a
master’s in the Teaching of Secondary
Mathematics from the University of Illinois –
Chicago and a joint JD/MBA from Northwestern
University.

Biography:
Coach Chris Hatem is entering his second year as
the head freshman “B” coach at Saint Ignatius
College Prep. Coach Hatem was responsible for
leading the freshman “B” team to an outstanding
17-5 record in his first year. He also assists the
varsity in a variety of capacities, including scouting,
film work, and individual skill development. Coach
Hatem is also an English teacher at Saint Ignatius.

Previous to arriving at Saint Ignatius, Coach Hatem
was the junior varsity boys’ head coach and varsity
assistant for four years at Theodore Roosevelt High
School in Albany Park.
A graduate of Whitney Young High School and
DePaul University, Coach Hatem has over eight
years of coaching and player development
experience, specializing in post play and strength

Coach McGovern is entering his sixth year filming and scouting for the boys'
varsity basketball program at Saint Ignatius College Prep. Coach McGovern
will rarely be found at Saint Ignatius basketball games as he is "on the road"
filming games and scouting upcoming opponents. Coach McGovern, a graduate of DePaul University with a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Management, also holds an ISBE Certificate in
Secondary Education and presently works with the Chicago Public Schools
Office of Early Childhood Education, Program Evaluation and Assessment. Phil McGovern

Coach McGovern is happily married to his wife of 40 years, Patricia, who are
proud parents of Nancy, Philip and Erin, all Saint Ignatius College Prep
graduates.
