Infection Control and First Aid
This checklist has been developed to assist Schools in addressing their hazard identification and
reporting.
The checklist provides guidance only, it is not intended as a definitive list for the identification of all
hazards. Staff are encouraged to make modifications to suit their specific environment. Note:
there will be hazards/deficiencies not mentioned on the checklists that will need to be identified
and managed.

(e.g. manual arts, home economics, science rooms)
Kits are accessible and securely stored (not locked)
Contents of kit are checked and updated regularly
Kits available for off school site activities and reflect injuries that
may occur based on risk assessment
Ice packs are available

First aid room cleaned using correct procedure
Cleaners advised of correct procedure for cleaning infectious waste
Waste from first aid room disposed of daily
Students with high level health risks identified and details
communicated to relevant staff
Requests for student medication during school to be supported by
physician (e.g. prescription)
Medication kept in appropriate secure conditions. Consider lockable
storage for some items eg Dexamphetamines.
Emergency medication eg Epipen should be readily available (not
in locked storage)
Student medical data is collected for excursions:
Adult assigned to students with medical needs
Appropriate medication is available during excursion
Adult trained in medical needs and administration of
medication
Risk assessments are conducted for excursions outlining first aid
requirements
Names of qualified first aid officers is communicated
Staff training register kept up-to-date for first aide officers
Emergency contact numbers are displayed near the phone
Student and staff emergency contact numbers are kept up to date
and easily accessed
Appropriate system of first aid application and communication
during playground duty (e.g. walkie-talkies, bum bags)
All injuries are recorded appropriately i.e. event form, “band aid”
book
Employees have access to information about infectious diseases
There is a designated parking area for ambulance if required
There is a vaccination program for employees at risk (e.g. Hep B, Q
Fever)
