National/Regional Updates
PHE - Everybody Active, Every day Consultation (RDL)
 Public Health England launched consultation for a new physical activity strategy called
Everybody Active, Every day:
 https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/everybody-active-every-day-a-frameworkto-embed-physical-activity-into-daily-life
 Two documents – One is a high level strategy and the other is the implementation and
evidence guide.
 Brings together a number of ideas and recommendations, including sport and recreation.
 Four main domains with a holistic approach.
PS
 Have PHE support as well as tool kits for government and council members.
 Launch is w/c 21st October.
 AR - Associated funding with launch from Sport England (Year 2, Get Healthy, Get
Active)

 Applications are invited from early December, with a deadline of 26th January.
 SM –Asked if the funding for specific projects?
 AR – responded its for those projects that encourage people to do physical activity that
leads to improvements in health.
National Primary PE and School Sport Premium (GP)








Entering year 2 of Primary School Sport Premium - £150 million investment into
primary schools, each school receives £8000, plus £5 per student to invest in
health related activities.
London Sport commissioned to support schools around investment , 5 staff
members and three main roles:
- Monitor schools on what they are posting on website etc.. on offer
- What national partners are spending the money on
- Direct guidance to schools if accepted and to schools that are not using
funding appropriately
In Southwark 43/79 schools unlikely to need support
28 schools might need support and 8 likely to need support
35 schools have not posted on website what they plan to do with the money
Will appoint locally funded partner in every borough to monitor schools and be
main contact for school to be decided by 20th October.
Look to link in with CYYP group and community sport.
Southwark prioritised in phase 1 for schools to be supported by November funding is available and ready to go out, an individual is just needed. £5000
available for post each year for 2 years (22 days of support for schools each
year -10 schools in year 1 , 10 schools in year 2 )
3. Working group updates
Tackling Inactivity (RDL)
 GP referral programme – Developed a Kickstart option, several activities for GPs to sign
up people to walks, SilverFit activities in Burgess Park, group sessions in community
venues (adult learning) and seated exercise sessions.
 Supporting a reduced rate membership at Fusion gyms.
 Updating referral system for GPs to make it easier for them.
 Free gym /free swim offer - how Tackling Inactivity group can support alternative
response to people with health conditions.
 Southwark Council Plan – Drafting of Active Design Policy
 Drafting of new Southwark Cycling Strategy - Conversations with TFL and Cycling
campaigns possibility of cycle loan scheme.
 Next meeting in 11th December, theme is Early Years.





CYYP (PS)
AM and AA unable to attend July CYYP meeting.
Presentation from LPESSN.
Themes that came out were around funding and whether a whole group project could be
looked at.
Agenda for meeting on 23/10/14 is funding with presentation from Xander Beck and
community sport on local funding updates.
Disability (LS)
 11 people attended, including new members GoalBall UK and a representative from
Docklands settlement.
 Natalie Coode (Fusion) presented on available facilities in the borough, from that a
partnership was formed with Metroblind (visually impaired charity) and they held



multisport day at Camberwell LC in September.
Workshop held on what was working for the group and what could be done better :
- Well - Communication to group
- Better - More areas of partnership working
In response, put together a communication document of all members contacts and their
job role/what there organisation does.
For January meeting will look to hold discussion around funding and how group can work
together on a bid.
5. Physical Activity and Sport Strategy 2014-17

Group are encouraged by positive actions achieved so far by strategy.

Unallocated Actions Group Challenge (PS)

Action 11- Sportability grant – Looking to introduce another one this year

Action – Women and Girls – Any additional partnership work:
SM - LSSPEN commissioned to do some work on Officiating – to encourage more
girls to become young officials. Community sport team have linked in, in regards to
exit routes and clubs.

Action 18 - Emerging talent, no designated lead.
SM - LSPEEN runs two projects - One is helping primary schools identify Gifted &
Talented pupils and the second is running three primary and secondary G&T days
for talented pupils in partnership with NGB’s.

AR – Suggested a link with Sports Aid?

AA - Successful model in Hertfordshire in supporting young people and emerging
talent.

AF - British Cycling have a good model involving club clusters.

Action 40 - Apprenticeships
SM- Have an apprenticeship programme, level 2 and 3. In conversation with
Crossrail about developing a partnership for apprentices. Also in conversation with
schools about hosting apprentices.
AR - Camden and Kensington and Chelsea have strong working models of
apprentice programmes.
PS - May take longer than the year to get this last action point initiated.

Communications Plan (Action 35) (PS)

A communications strategy has been put forward for PRO-ACTIVE Southwark to
increase communication links and will sit alongside wider strategy.


Get Active Southwark – Summer Campaign (Actions 6 & 36) (SJ)

Aim - Focus on families getting more active

One month online Facebook campaign - pilot

Two images with messages appeared on face book newsfeeds to encourage visits
to Get Active Southwark.

Positive results - Images seen over 800,000 times, total clicks over 2000 and 1000
website hits to get Active Southwark (62p/click).

18-24yrs olds most active during campaign and females more engaged than
males.

Get Active Website hits increased, on target for quarter.

Autumn - Article in Southwark Housing news on indoor and outdoor floodlit
activities.
New Year Campaign – New Year, New You.
Spring - Women and Girls campaign, potential work with Mumsnet.

All Fusion activities on Get Active Southwark

800 opportunities in Southwark to get active

AA –Sport England Marketing tool may be relevant.

RDL –Experia Mosaic (marketing and segmentation tool).
AR –Possible National Women in Sport Campaign next year.
PRO-ACTIVE Southwark Newsletter (AM)

Part of new communication strategy as a communication tool.

To filter messages from strategic group and working groups down to local partner
organisations and clubs.

Newsletter complete and draft to be circulated to a few local clubs for feedback.

5 sections - Good news, Funding, Workforce development, Get Active,
Community News, Inclusive and Active.

Bimonthly, first edition in December.

Capital Infrastructure (PS)

Southwark Athletics Centre, planning permission has been approved. Work will
start late November 2014 and completion mid-year June/July 2015
Club Funding Workshops –(TJ)

Community Action Southwark (CAS) is the umbrella organisation (or Council for
Voluntary Service) for the voluntary and community sector in Southwark. CAS
fulfils three key strategic functions for the voluntary and community sector in
Southwark: support, influence and providing connections.

Working with Nicola Donnelly (LBS) and XB to organise special projects for sports
clubs in the borough.

Deliver three workshops - Planning the future and exploring the income spectrum,
Writing grant applications.

Also providing additional support, one-ones etc....

External links with group that don’t do sport but interested in physical activity
aswell.

PS - Additional workshops with Southwark volunteering centre for clubs around
maintaining volunteers and social media to aid long term sustainability.
7.Focus Partner Section: Road Safety and Community Projects (ED)

AR - Asked if the project Council funded 

SM - Cycling enforcement for schools – Work closely with police, improving cycle routes
and children should only ride on roads where appropriate and if attended cycle training.

8. Funding
Community Sport Activation Fund Bid (XB)

Southwark put in a bid in Round 3 in partnership with Creation Trust with a focus
on Aylesbury estate - not successful.

New application for next round being looked at - late autumn 2015 deadline.

Focus on opening up Burgess park to more residents -feedback from survey done
by Creation Trust.

8 key projects - Football development programme, walking, running and cycling,
learn to swim programme at Camberwell, outdoors assets, multi club outreach
programme, dance and fitness, boys martial arts, after school gymnastics.

Consultations still happening - looking for feedback.
Opportunities on the horizon

Free Sport Deadline - Winter funding

Sport England - Get Healthy, Get Active (2nd round, launch next week) –Looking
at how sport can contribute to wider health outcomes.
AR - Local projects (18 that were previously funded) Other councils e.g. Barkingham and
Dagenham to deliver a referral programme for inactive individuals 14+ with bmi of 28+
- Looking for evidence of behaviour change within projects
AA - Kings College would be a useful link in terms of research for future projects

Inspired facilities fund - deadline 3rd November 2014 - no Southwark projects have
applied (small scale facilities improvements).
9. Individual Member Updates

TJ 

New Hockey club now based at Burgess Park.
BMX - Burgess Park will host London Youth Games 2015 competition.
Peckham BMX Club has two members on British Cycling Olympic Team on BMX
programme.
Conference on 20th November about “Making an Impact” helping organisations measure
the impact they are having and being able to communicate that to stakeholders etc:

RDL –

Knee high design challenge - Design Council - Researching issues for under 5’s in terms
of health and well being in Lambeth and Southwark. Last year challenge of inviting people
to respond to several briefs with creative solutions. On 21st November at Coin Street
neighbourhood centre can meet the six teams who got through to the last round. Three

Visit from secretary of state looking at work Bacons College and the network are doing
around competition and network development. Thank you to the group for helping assist
them to that position.
Assisting Youth Sport Trust to make their membership programme more relevant to
schools.
Working with company based in Paris to develop an inclusive SEN piece of work with
schools around pupil’s perception of special needs.
Hoping to resurrect SEN Easter and Summer programme for next year.
