World Champion florist
brings RHS Chelsea Flower
Show to Headingley.
Over 100 residents and visitors
welcomed Interflora’s Gold
Medal Winning Exhibit from
this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower
Show to Headingley Hall after
a member of staff won it in a
competition on behalf of the
60 residents.
The stunning ‘A Sense of Perspective’ exhibit
featured a series of nine stylised doorways
flowing down a seven metre space. This
innovative floral display was designed and
created by Interflora world champion florist,
David Denyer, who says it was influenced
by life, architecture and nature.
David recreated one of the doorways from
the exhibit at Headingley Hall, before
giving a talk to residents, staff and friends
who visited the care home to view the
beautiful exhibit.

to enjoy this once in a
lifetime experience.”

Developing our high
standards of care with
summer training days.
Throughout July all staff
attended one of several ‘Aim
High’ presentations which
were delivered throughout
the homes in Headingley,
Roundhay and Beeston.
The ‘Aim High’ initiative has been building
on our corporate values of quality, respect,
integrity and service which represent
our brand. The key message from the
presentations was that a brand is a promise
delivered and not only this but a promise
consistently delivered.
Our aim at Westward Care is to deliver the
very highest level of customer service and
to do this we require staff who are well
trained. Over the years training has been
a cornerstone of the organisation based
on the belief that training is all about
developing staff to their full potential.
To assist with this we have developed and
launched a new Performance Management
Appraisal System. It is hoped that this
will be a very positive experience with the
emphasis being on continual development
and we hope all staff will enjoy their
appraisals over the coming months.
Each of our homes offers a flexible
range of personal services including:

Westward Care News 05
Live life to the full!
At Westward we have always
believed that care and support
means more than just looking
after our residents’ health.
That’s why alongside our
portfolio of care services, we
take pride in offering a varied
list of social activities, designed
to support mind, body and soul.
No summer is complete without a trip to
the Seaside. On 20th July residents from
Pennington Court had a great day out
in Bridlington with excellent traditional
fish and chips and no rain! The trip was
so successful that a second group of
residents have already signed up for a
visit on 18th August.
Residents from Pennington Court
enjoyed a day out at Roundhay Park, one
of Europe’s largest city parks covering
700 acres of parkland, gardens, lakes and
woodland. Our residents enjoyed their
experience with a pub lunch and a visit
to Tropical World where those cheeky
chappies the Meercats brought much
entertainment.
Residents at Southlands enjoyed an
afternoon of toe tapping Jazz recently.
Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Louis
Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, sounds
from the past were brought to Southlands
by Chris White and his Jazz Band.
Residents joined in the dancing and
enjoyed listening to the nostalgic sounds.
A recent outing to the Elizabeth
Svensden Trust Donkey Sanctuary
summer fair at Eccup on 10th July was a
great success. The residents thoroughly
enjoyed looking around the stands and
shows. However, they came away with
more than they had bargained for when
Southlands adopted 2 donkeys!
Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot is the pinnacle
of the Summer Sporting calendar. An
event not to be missed as around 50
residents and guests at Headingley Hall,
got together for a fun and colourful
afternoon of first-class racing, fancy hat
wearing and a bit of a flutter.
Residents at Headingley Hall enjoyed
a delightful afternoon with Cathy
and Margaret, from Serendipity, who
provided a Victorian Soiree with singing
and reading stately-home style.
Winner of the ‘Best Small Care Employer
Award’ in Yorkshire and the Humber.

And the Winners are…
Quarterly Recognition Award Winner
In October 2009 Westward Care
launched a quarterly recognition
award across its homes. This is
to recognise those employees
who ‘go the extra mile’ in
delivering care and service in
the organisation.
The Spring Quarters recognition award was
won by Martin Monaghan, maintenance
person at Pennington Court. He was
nominated by a high number of people for
his positive attitude, commitment to other
staff and residents and his willingness
to help everyone no matter what he is
doing or time of day. Martin you are a
well-deserved winner!
Congratulations to our spring runner up,
Janet Beel, Senior Carer at Headingley Hall.
Janet was nominated as a hardworking
and patient member of a senior team
who displays respect for the whole team.
She is patient and caring, having time
for each resident and is always happy to
stay and help. She has also managed to
study in her own time for her NVQ level 4.
Congratulations Janet.
Congratulations go to Denise Holmes
from Headingley Hall – our winner
for this summer’s quarter. Denise an
Administrator and Social Care Co-ordinator
at Headingley Hall for 8 years, has won the
award for her commitment to her role and
her helpfulness to residents and staff alike.
She is known to go above and beyond
for the residents, shopping and running
errands on their behalf in her own time.
Well done Denise.
This quarter’s runner up is nominated
as “one in a million” and a real “lady of
the lamp”. Jayne Atkinson, a Registered
Nurse at Pennington Court, is notably
dedicated to her job. During the bad winter
weather she walked several miles to work
as the buses could not run in the snow.
Described as very helpful and caring, Jayne
demonstrates the core values of Westward
Care. Well done Jayne.
Westward Care raises £1,417 for Yorkshire
Cancer Centre.
A big congratulations to
all Westward staff who
took part in the Leeds 10k
Run to raise funds for the
Yorkshire Cancer Centre.
Everyone made a fantastic
effort and achieved
excellent finish times
ranging from 50 minutes
for the fitter members
of the team to 1 hour
and 47 minutes for those
members of the team
determined to finish.
Our facilities are proud to be associated with the above organisations.
