Duties of Student Managers GENERAL RULE NCAA Bylaw 11.01.7: A manager is an individual who performs traditional managerial duties (e.g., equipment, laundry, hydration) and meets the following additional criteria: a) The individual shall be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, except that during his or her final semester or quarter of a degree program, he or she may be enrolled in less than a fulltime program of studies, provided he or she is carrying (for credit) the courses necessary to complete the degree requirements; b) The individual may participate in limited on- court or on-field activities during practice (e.g., assist with drills, throw batting practice) or competition (e.g., assist with warm-up activities) involving student-athletes on a regular basis; c) The individual shall not provide instruction to student-athletes; d) The individual shall not participate in countable athletically related activities (e.g., practice player) except as permitted in Bylaw 11.01.6-(b); and e) In baseball, the individual shall forfeit any remaining eligibility in the sport at the institution at which the individual serves as a manager. Permissible Impermissible Perform traditional managerial duties (i.e. equipment, laundry, hydration, etc). Cannot conduct or provide skill instruction directly to or in the presence of student-athletes. Participate in limited on-court or on-field activities during practice (required and voluntary) involving student athletes (i.e. assist with drills, throw batting practice) or competition (assist with warm-up activities) on a regular basis. Cannot make or assist in making tactical decisions related to the sport during on-court or on-field practice or competition (e.g., determination related to strategy, maneuver, play, scheme or the like). Attend/observe voluntary athletically related activities. Cannot conduct or report back regarding voluntary athletically related activities. Observe or perform administrative duties during practice or competition (e.g., track statistics, run clock). Cannot participate in recruiting activities on or offcampus. Perform administrative duties outside practice or competition (e.g., attend meetings involving coaching Cannot provide tactical instructions/strategy directly to activities, analyze film). or in the presence of student-athletes. Sit on bench and/or sideline. Attend Strength & Conditioning workouts. Travel with team to away games. Cannot scout opponents. Additional FAQ 1) What, if any, responsibilities/interactions can a manager have when recruits are on campus? a. Managers may receive a meal with a PSA on an official visit, provided the meal is within a 30 mile radius of campus. b. May provide ground transportation to a PSA and PSA’s family between the campus and any bus/train station/airport during an official visit. *Please remember that if a manager or another staff member brings a recruit to campus the 48 hour period begins upon arrival to campus.* 2) What, if any, responsibilities can a manager have during summer required activities for football and M/W basketball? a. Managers can perform the same duties as during the regular academic year, provided he or she was enrolled full-time at the conclusion of the spring quarter prior to and/or has been accepted for enrollment as a regular full-time student for the following fall term. 3) Is it permissible to pay a manager? a. Yes, unlike volunteer coaches or undergraduate student coaches, managers can be paid. Please check with HR and your Sport Administrator to go through proper University procedures on allowable wages. 4) Can managers receive per diem when traveling with our team? a. Yes, managers can receive the same per diem that student-athletes receive. Please work with your Sport Administrator/Accounting to ensure appropriate funds are available for this within your programs budget. 5) Can managers receive pre-game and other meals incidental to participation with our team? a. Yes. How To Add a Manager for Your Program 1) Managers must complete a [paper] form which requires approval by Compliance, Sport Administrator, and HR. Public Folder -> Compliance Folder -> Forms Folder -> Student Manager/ Coach Form. 2) Like all other individuals who work directly with student-athletes, Stanford University requires a LiveScan for managers despite their full time enrollment as Stanford students.
