Lot # 1
1898-99 National Copper Plate Co. Portraits Complete Set of 50 with Original Book
This set may well be the sole surviving complete set of 1898-99
National Copper Plate Co. player pictures in existence. Once in a
great while, a single picture shows up at auction and it’s usually in
lower grade. This complete set arrives looking very similar to the
issued condition 110 years ago and even includes the original binder
in which the cards were issued and which preserved their uniformly
superior state of preservation. With the unfortunate exception of the
Cap Anson portrait on which the paper to the left of the original stringbinding holes has been torn away, the singles in this set have only
those original two pinholes in the left border to detract from otherwise
uniformly Near-Mint or better display quality.
The NCP Portraits were produced at the end of the 19th century
in Grand Rapids, Mich. National Copper Plate Co. (NCP) appears
to have been a specialty engraver producing illustrative plates for
periodical and book publishers in an era when photo illustrations in
the print media were uncommon.
With the opening of the 1898 baseball season, NCP began offering
what it advertised as its “Art Gallery of Prominent Base Ball Players
of America.” The pictures were initially issued in series of about six
each and sold for 10 cents per series. The NCP pictures were blackand-white photomechanical prints on semi-gloss paper in a size of
8-3/4-by-11 inches.
The original cover with which this set was discovered makes it clear
that this is the portfolio that was offered as a subscription premium to
The Sporting News. It is not currently known whether this collection
Review additional lots at www.collect.com/auctions
CCA_pp3-19.indd 3
was available in any other manner. The cover appears to be a heavily
shellacked burlap, imprinted in black. On the front is a rampart lion
between lines of type that read: “VOL. 1. / Portfolio of / Prominent
Ball Players” and “ISSUED BY / The Sporting News, / ST. LOUIS,
MO.” The back cover pictures a catcher’s mitt and a fielder’s glove
and is imprinted with advertising that reads, “The Ball Players Whose
Pictures are in this Volume Use Reach Mitts and Gloves.” It carries the
imprint of the A.J. Reach Co., Philadelphia.”
The majority of the pictures have on their fronts a head-and-shoulders
portrait of a National League player, either in street clothes or in
uniform; five of the pictures have full-length portrayals of uniformed
players. The dual dates with which the set is traditionally identified
reflects the fact that many of the pictures carry either an 1898 or an
1899 date along with the player name, position and team on front.
For more than half of the players on the checklist, this appearance
is their first, if not their only, appearance on a collectible. This is the
earliest memorabilia depiction of Jimmy Collins, Elmer Flick, Willie
Keeler, Bobby Wallace, Vic Willis and, most significantly, Honus
Wagner. The backs contain within a box at center a career summary
of the player. The write-up summarizes the player’s amateur and pro
career and often includes such personal data as hometown, physical
description and career highlights.
The full checklist and more photos are available online.

1920s Ty Cobb Stall and Dean
Advertising Display Piece
The greatest player of his generation turns up
here in a spectacular advertising piece from
the 1920s, a multicolor, sturdy cardboard
countertop display that is among the rarest of
the period. In a die-cut piece measuring 15 3/4
inches in height and 10 inches wide, a leaping
Cobb is shown catching a line drive in an iconic
fielding pose that will be instantly recognizable
to serious students of the game. Cobb’s leap
is set against a backdrop of an enormous ball
and glove bearing the Stall and Dean company
name. The “Ty Cobb Gloves” type surrounds a
facsimile Cobb signature on the glove, which
in turn is set off by a brown checkerboard
background. This highly coveted piece
probably hits the auction block once or twice
a decade; a specimen only slightly superior
in terms of surface wear and presentation
approached $20,000 at the famed Barry Halper
Collection Auction at Sotheby’s in September
of 1999. The presented piece is in excellent
condition, save only for the surface wear in
the lower-left corner and some fading running
about four inches up in the same location. The
easel back is intact and complete.

Jack Johnson Signed Sepia Photograph
- Beautiful Autograph
One of the most dominant boxers of all time, Johnson held the title
from 1908-1915 and remains one of boxing’s most sought-after
signatures. This sepia-toned photo is inscribed “Best Wishes - To
My Best Friend Harry E. Ringsly - From Jack Johnson” on the lower
border. The signature, written in black ink with a steel tip pen, is dark
and bold, with a 9-10 strength. The “Gus Wilsons Training Camp”
stamp on the right side most likely dates the photo to 1911, which
is when he married Lucille Cameron and drew the ire of Southern
ministers. The photo has undergone some professional restoration
and displays in EX condition with small fissures and creases confined
mainly to the periphery, as well as sections of paper loss on the
reverse. The signature is authenticated by JSA.

Lot # 4
Al Simmons 1939-40 H&B Side-Written and
Double Vault-Marked Game-Used Bat
Presented is an impeccable example of baseball history and
an item that belongs in the uppermost echelon of baseball
collectibles based upon value, condition and rarity. This 38-inch,
35-ounce signature model (predating model numbers) was used
by Al Simmons during the late 1930s, then later returned by him
to the H&B factory, a fact clearly indicated by the side-written
notations which still clearly read “35 oz. Al Simmons 5-1-40
Phila. Amer.” The vault mark “S28” is stamped on both the
knob and the end of the barrel. Also written on the reverse are
numerous factory notations regarding the bat’s specifications
and measurements. If you were teaching a class on game-used
bats, this would be the perfect exemplar. The bat is composed
of top-quality white ash, is uncracked and displays deep and
pronounced manufacturer’s stamping throughout. It also displays
heavy game use in the form of ball and stitch marks, cleat marks
and grain checking along the reverse of the barrel that has been
tamped down by 13 tiny “bat boy” nails. Side-written bats are
among the most desirable of all collectibles of any game-used
item since they are essentially a letter of authenticity from the
player himself. Simmons was one of the key stars of Connie
Mack’s A’s teams from 1924-1932 and retired in 1944 with 2,927
hits and a lifetime batting average of .334. He was inducted into
the Hall of Fame in 1953. MEARS graded this bat a A9.5 and
noted “incredible factory-documented bat with only the small
nails keeping it from a perfect A10” while PSA/DNA’s John Taube
simply states “It is the finest Al Simmons game-used bat I’ve had
the pleasure of authenticating.”

1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team-Signed Flag,
including Herb Brooks
“Do you believe in Miracles? Yes!” When the U.S.
Olympic Hockey team defeated the Soviet Union
4-3, it marked one of the most significant sporting
events in history. It was voted the greatest sports
moment of the 20th century by Sports Illustrated.
The memories of fans waving U.S. flags and singing
patriotic songs such as “God Bless America”
are forever etched in most of our minds, as is Al
Michaels’ dramatic countdown. The U.S. would
go on to defeat Finland, 4-2, and capture the Gold
Medal and bring immense national pride during
the Cold War. This full-size, framed U.S. flag is
signed by the entire team, which is extremely rare
since virtually all of them have long ago ceased
signing the flag due to its iconic status. The most
important signature is head coach Herb Brooks,
who died in a car crash in 2003. Some of the other
highlights include goalie Jim Craig, the three players
who scored goals (Buzz Schneider, Mark Johnson
(twice) and Mike Eruzione) and five players who
would go on to 500+ career NHL games (Neal
Broten, Ken Morrow, Mike Ramsey, Dave Christian
and Johnson). This is truly a sight to see and
even had James Spence itching to bid on it as he
authenticated every clear, bold signature. This is
truly a one-of-a-kind piece that you may never see
surface again, and a true piece of history.

Babe Ruth Headin’ Home Advertising Cards
Complete Set - One of a Kind
A rare four-card set of advertising cards for the
1920 film “Headin’ Home” starring Babe Ruth.
Memorabilia from this film is extremely rare and
these were originally discovered tucked in a
press book for the 1920 movie. The press book
was distributed to movie theater owners, and
detailed the various promotional support available
to theaters including providing illustrations of
posters and lobby cards. The press book and
cards can be traced back to the Perez-Steele
family, while the accompanying movie press book
was sold to Barry Halper. Not only is this the only
set known (not even a single additional card has
ever been seen) but the very substantial Headin’
Home press book which once accompanied the
set (in which the cards were originally found) is,
to the best of our knowledge, the only example
known. The cards are 4-1/2-by-5-1/2 inches and
each is graded by Beckett Grading Services.
The cards show Ruth, his bat, hands and feet
separately on each of four cards: “Here He Is!!
‘Babe’ Ruth” (Ruth profile, NM-MT 8); “School
Boys Idolize the Owner of These and You Know
Him!!!” hands, Ex 5); Millions Have Seen Him on
the Field...” (feet, Ex-Mt 6); and “An Entire Nation
Loves the Colossus...” (bat, Near Mint+ 7.5). Grab

Michael Jordan Team-Signed Sheets from 1984-1998 - every team MJ played for
Here’s the ultimate autograph lot for a Chicago Bulls fan from the Michael Jordan Era:
a unique Team Sheet booklet compiled by Bulls official scorer and statistician Robert
Rosenberg. A total of 15 sheets in all from 1981-82 to 1997-98, with no sheet from
1982-83 and no Jordan signature in 1993-94 when he was playing a different kind of
fantasy baseball. Each sheet is 8 1/2 by 11 inches, pulled from the Bulls program, with an
advertisement on the reverse. Sheets have JSA-certified signatures from players, coaches
and MJ. Each page has roughly 20 signatures, meaning the entire booklet represents likely
300-plus, and comes with a letter of authenticity signed by Rosenberg. The pages are in
plastic sleeves, in EX-MT or better condition; the black booklet itself is in GOOD condition,
but the front cover has separated from the spiral binders.

required the purchase of an entire case and
arrive with a factory seal across the toploader.
The cards are numbered from A1-A97 with a few
numbers (A53, A54, A59, A60) not issued and
other numbers (A51, A52, A55, A56, which had
two variations with the “Jonathan Harris as the
Doctor” card being very scarce, and A76) issued
with the same number to come up with the full
98 cards. This set is extremely rare in completed
form. In fact, this set has never been offered for
sale in any venue. All cards are Near Mint+, with
most falling into the Mint category.

1934 Team-Signed Cubs Baseball with Kiki Cuyler
Jesse Burkett Cut Signature - Rare Auto from “The Crab”
Members of the 1934 Chicago Cubs autographed this official Major
League baseball from Wilson. The ball includes signatures from
all the key members, including: Kiki Cuyler, Babe Herman, Gabby
Hartnett, Chuck Klein, Charlie Grimm, Guy Bush, Woody English,
Augie Galan, Stanley Hack, Bud Tinning and Lou Warneke. All
signatures have been authenticated by JSA.
Turn-of-the-century ballplayers can be extraordinarily tough
autographs, so the cut signature of Hall of Famer Jesse Burkett neatly
mounted and displayed on a 3-by-5 index card represents a significant
opportunity for a serious HOF autograph collector. The .338 lifetime
hitter was one of the giants (literally and metaphorically) of late 19thcentury baseball, topping the .400 mark twice. His careful, delicate
signature (from a bank check) is just as carefully mounted on the index
card, which carries the typewritten words “Hall of Fame” in the upper
left-hand corner and Burkett’s name in the upper right, in the fashion
of the early autograph cut
collections. The elegant cut is
graded PSA/DNA Authentic.

jersey is signed by the entire Royals roster including
players such as: David Cone, Kevin Appier, Wally

and back on his jersey number. During the
signing, Lee May dropped a burning

and usage wear, including a few stains and some creasing, while the
interior has been handled but remains intact and fairly clean. Binding
is a little loose with slight water stain, but it doesn’t detract from the
overall VG condition. Photos include Kid Gleason and Fred Mitchell,
with key players including Jackson, Eddie Collins and Grover Cleveland
Alexander. Book also includes each team’s schedule, how each team
got its name and a “Worth Knowing” page with interesting facts about
baseball history. Few of these exist and most die-hard collectors have

in rough shape, probably even a stretch to call it VG, but the pages
inside display nicely, as does the cover (missing the back cover)
despite the upper right corner being missing and some obvious
fading with a few creases. The first page of the booklet reads “A

Ernie Banks Original Artwork by Charles De Simone signed by Banks
The Hall of Famer would typically proclaim a desire to play two games, but he’d have to be
content with a more singular concept with this one-of-kind artwork by the acclaimed Charles
De Simone. Offered here is one of three pieces of De Simone’s 20th-Century Art Collection
which are included in this auction. His epic series now numbers more than 100, all of them
unique, all of them breathtaking in the loving genuflection to the game of baseball in general and
the featured players in particular. The Cubbies’ beloved Mr. Banks shares the colorful canvas
with a vintage pennant and a postcard of Wrigley Field, along with Ernie’s Louisville Slugger, a
spectacular painting within a painting, a newspaper clipping, his 1954 Topps rookie card and
even his 1959 Home Run Derby card, all showcased by his uniform and four different baseballs.
For serious collectors of De Simone’s work, the placement of the baseballs carries enormous
significance. The signed baseball always appears at precisely the same spot on every canvas, a
nuanced addition that helps to unify and accentuate the amazing collection; the other baseballs
are always strategically placed as graphic devices that add balance or even needed tension to
superbly designed arrangements. The Banks piece is nicely showcased in a gold leaf frame; the
artist’s signature appears in the upper left-hand corner. De Simone has selected Collect.com
Auctions to be the exclusive source in the auction community for his original work.

Lot # 25
Stan Musial Original Artwork by Charles De Simone signed by Musial
Presented here is an opportunity to own a piece of arguably the most unique and significant art collection
in the sports memorabilia hobby. His originals featuring everybody from Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle
to Ted Williams and Cal Ripken have sold at many of the major auctions for thousands of dollars, a tribute
to a super realistic skill and uncompromising talent. Charles De Simone’s 20th-Century Art Collection
marks the continuation of a two-decade odyssey by the acclaimed New York artist that has produced
more than 100 one-of-a-kind pieces that celebrate the game of baseball and many of its most famous
practitioners. We say “many,” rather than all, because of one of many unique aspects to his series: all of
the paintings are signed by the players portrayed, always on a single-signed baseball on the canvas that,
like everything else, looks so real that you want to reach out and pick it up. The New York-based artist
launched his Homeric venture more than 20 years ago, intuitively understanding the role that baseball
memorabilia, equipment, cards and ephemera could play in telling the story of a game that boasts a
history unrivaled in professional sports. In the case of the 16-by-20-inch Musial, a home jersey provides
much of the backdrop, along with De Simone’s realistic grass, in a grouping that includes a Musial model
Louisville Slugger that neatly divides several postcards, a newspaper clipping and even his 1948 Bowman
rookie card. The reactions of viewers is quite understandably that it appears these items have been
photographed in a collage setting; only close inspection reveals that this is artwork so vivid and captivating that the line between the real and
the created has been obliterated. De Simone’s patented single-signed baseball near the center of the painting features Stan’s perfect signature.
A remarkable piece honoring the National League’s marquee player in the years immediately following World War II. The piece also comes
showcased in a gold leaf mat and matching frame that labor with some success to be worthy of the artwork they adorn. The artist’s signature
appears in the upper left-hand corner. De Simone’s paintings are in the permanent collections at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, the
Louisville Slugger Museum and the MCI Sports Museum in Washington, D.C.

Brooks Robinson Original Artwork by Charles De Simone signed by Robinson
Here is the fabled Brooks Robinson, lovingly presented in yet another entry in Charles De Simone’s
20th-Century Art Collection that now numbers more than 100 one-of-a-kind pieces celebrating the
game of baseball. Like all of his work, the one-of-a-kind 16-by-20-inch masterpiece supplies the
viewer with memorabilia from Brooks career that seems so real as to defy the senses. Robinson
postcards intermingle with his 1957 Topps rookie card and his 1964 Topps his MVP season in a
stunning display that pays homage to his bat (a Brooks Robinson Louisville Slugger) and his famed
glove. A pearly white baseball hovers in the upper-right corner, seemingly defying gravity and the
singular opportunity to drop contently into the glove below. Next to the bat is another ball, this time
bearing Brooks actual signature, the classy script that has marked a career as a Hall-of-Fame player
and a second, longer journey as one of the great ambassadors to the game since he stepped away
from the field. The Robinson piece features the artist’s signature in the upper left-hand corner and is
elegantly framed.

Babe Ruth/Miller Huggins Original Artwork
by Darryl Vlasak
The greatest Yankee in history is elegantly portrayed here alongside
the manager who did his very best for the better part of a decade
to tame him. The diminutive Hall-of-Fame manager Miller Huggins
shakes hands with his superstar outfielder Babe Ruth in a setting
adjacent to the dugout. The
massive 24-by-30-inch
original art presents the
two icons who launched a
dynasty that would extend
for four decades. Rare
is the original artwork of
this caliber that pictures
Huggins; perhaps no
other ballplayer has found
himself immortalized on
canvas to the extent of
the Babe, but never to
better effect than in this unique presentation that shows Ruth in a
candid setting that celebrates his greatness without even hinting
at his famous batting stance or follow through. Vlasak’s work is
as masterful and striking as in dozens of other original pieces that
have sold for $5,000 and more and grace private collections across
the country. It is signed by the artist in his distinctive fashion in the
lower right-hand corner.

Walter Johnson Original
Artwork by Darryl Vlasak
One of the top sports
artists in the genre brilliantly
captures the essence of
the greatest player not in
the Baseball Hall of Fame.
On the 90th anniversary
of the infamous Black Sox
Scandal World Series of
1919, Shoeless Joe Jackson
is rendered in Vlasak’s
impeccable style, completing
his swing and watching the
flight of the ball. Portrayed
in the White Sox home, pinstriped jersey, the image of the legendary
Jackson is a classic one, evocative of the era and player, and instantly
recognizable to legions of serious fans and collectors. Vlasak’s original
paintings have sold for upwards of $5,000 over the years, with many
included in the top private collections, along with being featured at
different times at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown,
at Wrigley Field and at Comiskey Park. The 20-by-24-inch treasure is in
his traditional acrylic-on-canvas super realistic style, and is signed by
the artist in his distinctive fashion in the lower left-hand corner.

In perhaps one of the
most stunning and elegant
portraits ever created of the
great Walter Johnson, the
man who was part of the first
group of five players elected
to the Hall of Fame in 1936.
The fireballing right-hander
could hardly have been in better company, nor could his fellow
Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner and Christy
Mathewson. Few artists in the country can properly present such
legendary figures in appropriate fashion, but the acclaimed Vlasak
manages nicely in a dramatic, horizontal format that pictures The
Big Train leaning against the grandstand railing as he watches the
game. Vlasak’s remarkable talent produces a likeness of the great
hurler as profound and compelling as any extant, neatly presented
in a luminescent Senators uniform that seems to beckon the touch
it looks so real. Vlasak’s unmatched attention to detail is brilliantly
showcased in a bandage on Johnson’s pitching hand, or a softfocused background stadium that carries you back to the 1920s.
The 20-by-24-inch painting is signed by the artist in his distinctive
fashion in the lower left-hand corner. Vlasak has selected Collect.

Lot of 18 1887 N28, N29 and N43 Cards
The 1888 Allen & Ginter World’s Champions
N28 cards (1 1/2 by 2 3/4 inches) are among
the most beautiful in the hobby, and this lot
offers bidders a chance at one legendary
baseball star and several boxers, swimmers,
runners and even the odd billiards star. An N28
John M. Ward presents as EX but can only lay
claim to FAIR status because of pencil marks
removed from the front; seven other amateur
and professional sportsmen snag GOOD
grades, and four others end up FAIR. The five
N29s – no baseball players – earn GOOD (1)
and FAIR (4) nods. An 1888 Allen and Ginter
World’s Champions N43 (3 1/4 by 2 7/8 inches)
is of cyclist Ralph Temple (FAIR).

PSA 4
The greatest player not in the Hall of Fame is
presented here in the greatest candy issue of
the first quarter century, the 1914-15 Cracker
Jack series of E145. Jackson is in a PSA
Authentic holder in the 1914 series, the tougher
of the two Cracker Jacks to find because it was
not offered as a complete set through the mail
as 1915 was.
The 1909 E92 Croft’s Cocoa cards are highly
sought after by serious collectors (1 1/2 by 2
3/4 inches), so of course the Honus Wagner
Batting commands great attention. It’s found
here in a PSA Authentic holder (altered), and
presents much closer to EX.
Here’s a breathtaking example of the
once rarely seen 1933 Bluebird oversized
advertising cards (3 7/8 by 5 7/8 inches),
offered here in a PSA 4 VG-EX holder but …
a tiny nick in the lower right-hand corner is
the only thing standing between this being
anointed a NM-MT designation.

1920 W522 Babe Ruth Hand Cut
No. 48 PSA 4
As he did during his career, The Bambino
carries serious clout in the various strip cards
issues of the 1920s, and in this case that
means the 1920 W522 issue of 20 cards ( 1 3/8
by 2 1/4 inches), here in a hand-cut PSA 4 VGEX, and a card back as clean as a whistle.
The King of T206 White Borders is nicely
represented here in his Piedmont Bat on
Shoulder card, graded PSA 2.
This is a nice example of a Ruth card that
isn’t seen as often as many of his others from
the period. The 1921 E220 National Caramel
issue (2 by 3 1/4 inches) is often confused with
the more widely known American Caramel
series. This particular specimen is graded PSA
Authentic with a nice front presentation of the
legendary slugger finishing his swing.

1934 Goudey Baseball
Complete Set (96) - 4 PSA
Graded
One of the most charming sets from smack dab in the middle of the
Great Depression, the economical 4-in-1 Goudey R321. It gave eager
youngsters four players on each card (2 3/8 by 2 7/8 inches), plus a
variety of nine different puzzle possibilities on the back. The No. 16
card with Babe Ruth, fellow Hall of Famer Rabbit Maranville, McManus
and Brandt is, by several multiples, the most expensive card in the
issue, and it’s offered here in a PSA Authentic holder. The amazing
assortment of 68 here offers unprecedented opportunities to build a
complete set and have plenty left over, and in pretty good condition for
a mid-1930s Goudey issue.
Lou Gehrig says this is a pretty
cool set, and not just because his
mug appears on half of the cards
(and Hall of Famer Chuck Klein
on the other half), and one you
don’t find every day with the entire
enchilada offered at one time.
The two Gehrigs (Nos. 37 and 61)
are graded PSA Authentic, as is
Greenberg No. 62; Foxx No. 1 is a
PSA 2.5 GOOD-Plus. The 1934 Goudey issue (2 3/8 by 2 7/8) is one
of the great issues of the Great Depression.

Not just everybody looks good in
burlap, but Ken Johnson and the
whole Pittsburgh Team manage
to pull it off nicely in a pair of
GAI 7.5 NM-Plus 1968 Topps
Unopened Cellos. Each pack has
11 tightly wrapped cards from the Fourth Series, plus one of those
1968 Topps Game inserts. Somebody with a lot of time on their hands
could figure out who’s on the back; the Game cards cover most of the
area, requiring all that detective work. All we know is the packs could
bring forth McCovey, Maris and Banks, to name a few, plus a boatload
of All-Stars.
The top card of this 35-card cello
pack is Bobby Bolin, and the team
is something called the Pilots, and
the uniform looks like it’s from
American Legion ball. Oh, wait,
it’s 1970, it’s Seattle and it’s the
boffo unopened cello pack neatly
entombed by GAI and anointed
a Perfect 10. Sixth Series (Nos.
547-633) packs could include Pete
Rose, Willie Mays and Ernie Banks,
so how did this one-owner pack
(purchased in 1970 from Topps)
stay that way for so long?

9 by GAI
One 1969 Topps First Series
cello pack is nice, two is way
more than twice as nice.
Something to do with physics,
I believe. Fred Gladding and
Nelson Briles represent here
in Mint GAI 9 holders, with
Roy White No. 25 at the aft end of Brile’s pack in blazing purple
background glory that makes you a little woozy; the 1969 Orioles’
Rookie Stars No. 66 with Merv Rettenmund shows pulsating pinkitude
as he guards Gladding’s back. The first series could yield Aaron,
Banks, Bench and Clemente, so take a deep breath before checking
what that crew commands in Mint holders.

The only thing better than a
lot with two GAI 9 Mint 1970
Topps Unopened Cello Packs
is two lots with two GAI 9 Mint
1969 Topps Cello Packs. We
don’t mess around here. One
pack has NL Batting Leaders
No. 2 with Rose and the Alou
brothers (Willie Davis on the
back), and the second boasts
the NL Strikeout Leaders No.
12 with Gibson, Jenkins and Singer, and another pretty fair country
pitcher, Milt Pappas, on the bottom of the 12-card stack. Yikes! This
could have lesser men gnawing on those impregnable GAI holders.

1953 Sports
Illustrated
“Dummy No. 1”
Issue
1933 All-Star Game Program
(Inaugural Game)
Offered here is
the first “Dummy”
copy of Sports
Illustrated’s first
issue, designed for
in-house use by
the creative staff.
The front cover
pictures a large
shot of people in a
football stadium’s
stands, overlaid
with a small title
box that reads,
“THE NEW SPORT
MAGAZINE
- DUMMY NO. 1
DECEMBER 5,
1953.” Other successive design changes would require the creation
of new dummies, but this represents the magazine in its first design
stage. Very rare, this in-house-only example approaches EX+ in
grade, due to light wear at the corners and the spine. It contains
completely different content from the version that eventually hit
the newsstands (no card insert ever appeared in this one, as
that desirable foldout and its accompanying article had yet to be
created).
Official program from the first
Major League All-Star Game held
on July 6, 1933, at Comiskey
Park in Chicago. The fold-over
scorecard pictures White Sox
president J. Louis Comiskey on
the cover, while the preprinted
scorecard on the interior features
the starting lineups for both
teams, including Ruth and Gehrig
for the American League and
Paul Waner and Bill Terry for
the National League. The 1933
All-Star Game featured what
many consider to have been the
greatest assembly of baseball
talent to ever take the field in a single game. Seventeen future Hall of
Famers made appearances in the game, including Babe Ruth, Lou
Gehrig, Frank Frisch, Chuck Klein, Chick Hafey, Bill Terry, Paul Waner,
Pie Traynor, Gabby Hartnett, and Carl Hubbell. Connie Mack and John
McGraw served as managers for their respective leagues. Babe Ruth
hit the first homer in All-Star game history. Frisch provided the NL
offense, with a two-run homer in the sixth inning, but the combined
talents of Lefty Gomez and Babe Ruth allowed the American League
to prevail, 4-2. The program has been scored in pencil and makes note
of all of the substitutions made in the game. The program presents in
VG-EX condition with a noticeable centerfold and a few minor surface
wrinkles being the only negatives.

Collect.com Auctions User Agreement
Please make sure to read the complete user agreement presented in the pages below. It includes valuable information on
bidding, auction rules and will answer most of your questions. If you have further questions, please call us at 888-463-3063.
Registration
Bidders must pre-register in order to place a bid in our
auction. You can do this on our website by clicking here or
by phone (888-463-3063) – Our normal business hours
are Monday-Friday 9-6 EST. To complete the registration
process, bidders will need to provide basic information, like
name, street address, etc., and a valid credit card (used only
to verify your identity).
Once bidders have registered and received our
confirmation e-mail, they are eligible to bid. At the time
of registration, bidders will create their own user ID and
password (one user ID per address), which will remain active
for all of our auctions. If you have any questions during the
registration process, please call or Click Here to email us.
Bidding
Please remember there is a 17% buyer’s premium on every
lot. If a bidder wins a lot for $1,000, the actual cost will be
$1,170, plus shipping, insurance and local sales tax.
An initial bid must be placed on an item to be eligible to
win the item auctioned. Initial bidding can be done online,
via fax, via phone (888-463-3063) and via e-mail (due to
server problems with some e-mail systems, e-mail bids must
be done 24 hours before the auction closes). All items are
available for viewing up to 48 hours before the auction closes
at our Iola, WI offices. Please call 888-463-3063 in advance
for an appointment.
Initial bids must be placed on a lot at any point before
10 PM EST on the closing day of the auction to be eligible
to bid on the item during our extended bidding period. If a
bidder is the only bidder on an auction lot when the initial
bidding period ends, he/she is the winner of that auction lot.
Remember, if a bidder hasn’t placed a bid on an item before
the initial bidding closes, that bidder cannot bid on that item
during the extended period, so it’s very important to get
initial bids in quickly on all the items in which a bidder has
an interest.
Extended bidding begins at 10 PM EST. Each lot is closed
when bidding has ceased for an elapsed time of 15 minutes.
Whenever a bid is placed, the 15-minute timer is automatically
reset. If a bidder is the current high bidder and increases his/
her own ceiling bid, the timer will NOT reset. It will only reset
by another straight bid or any type of bid placed by another
bidder. The purpose of the 15-minute bidding window is to
prevent snipers from winning lots in the closing. Bidders will
know if they have won an item without having to wait for the
entire auction to close.
The bidder will receive bid confirmations and outbid
notifications via e-mail on every lot for which he/she is bidding
on. Since these e-mails might be identified as spam and some
e-mail systems aren’t as reliable, the bidder is responsible for
keeping track of all of his/her bids. Our software is equipped
with a “My Accounts”, “My Bids” and “My Watch List” to help
bidders follow his/her bids. It is advised that a bidder track
his/her bids and watched items on the auction site.
We strongly encourage all bidders to call or e-mail with
questions before placing bids. We cannot guarantee that
every lot described by us will be accepted or graded the same
by yourself or a third party. In addition, we are not responsible
for the grades of cards in graded holders. Finally, there are no
returns on any items purchased in our auctions, all lots are
sold “as is,” and all sales are final.
The bidder is responsible for all bids placed with his/her
user ID and password. Retraction of bids is NOT permitted
under any circumstances. By placing a bid, the bidder is
agreeing to all the terms and conditions outlined herein.
Payment of Invoices
Invoices will be sent to all winning bidders via e-mail (the
day after the auction closes) and via regular mail the week
following the auction close. All invoices must be paid within
CCA_rules.indd 63
15 days from the end of the auction. We do not ship lots until
we are paid in full and need prompt payments in order to
quickly pay our consignors. Late bidder payments (or non
payment) will result in suspension of bidding privileges for
future auctions and product will be sold to under bidder per
terms outlined in “Other Guidelines” below.
By bidding on an item, bidders are agreeing to pay
for that item, plus all other fees associated with that item,
including buyer’s premium, sales tax, shipping, insurance
and collection agency fees if needed. Payment of 10% of the
closing price (including buyer’s premium) will be levied on
any unpaid lots.
We accept personal checks, business checks, money
orders, cashier’s checks, cash, major credit cards and Paypal.
Personal checks will be held until funds are collected, which
may take up to 7-10 business days. Payments exceeding
$2,500 must be made via personal check, business check,
money order, cashier’s check or cash.
Other guidelines
Items are sold to the highest bidder and all bids are in U.S.
Dollars.
If a winning bidder does not honor his/her bid with
payment, F+W Media may, at its sole discretion, sell the item
to an underbidder, re-offer the given lot in a future auction or
sell the item privately. The original winner will be responsible
for any losses incurred or service charges involved in the
sale, and the non-paying bidder explicitly agrees to pay any
and all reasonable legal fees incurred by F+W Media in the
collection of these losses.
When F+W Media descriptions refer to population reports,
we only reference the population of that card’s grading
company at the time the description was written. These
population reports are subject to change. F+W Media is also
not responsible for typographical errors in descriptions.
The buyer agrees not to involve F+W Media in any disputes
with the seller. In addition, the seller understands that no
agency, partnership or other legal relationship is formed
through the auction service.
In no event will F+W Media’s liability to a purchaser exceed
the purchase price actually paid for the lot. F+W Media
also reserves the right to delay or postpone the auction for
a reasonable period of time due a significant event, which
makes it inadvisable to hold the auction as scheduled,
without recourse from any consignor or bidder.

Authentication
All of our autographs sold through Collect.com Auctions
come with authentication from James Spence Authentication,
PSA/DNA, Upper Deck Authenticated or Steiner. Some items
may come with more than one LOA/COA. If you have any
questions with their methods, please contact the appropriate
organization.
On autographed lots with a large number of autographs,
we will issue a blanket auction letter of authenticity for the
entire lot. This is the original letter that we receive from the
authentication company describing the offered lot. You may
use this original letter to obtain individual LOA/COA. It is also
worth noting that certain large lots, while accompanied by a
LOA/COA, may contain a small number of clubhouse, fake
and autopen signatures, which should be considered part of
the lot and are non-returnable or refundable.
The provenance and authenticity of all items in our auctions
have been properly researched. Where appropriate, we have
employed the services of PSA or SGC for card grading and
authentication; James Spence Authentication (JSA) and
PSA/DNA for autograph authentication; and John Taube and
MEARS (Memorabilia Evaluation and Research Services) for
game-used equipment. Other services may be used at our
discretion, depending on the item and authenticator’s area of
expertise. LOA/COA’s from third-party authenticators, as well
as other relevant sources are indicated in lot descriptions.
