O you who believe! Approach not As Salah when you are in a
drunken state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter,
nor when you are in a state of Janabah, (i.e. in a state of
sexual impurity and have not yet taken a bath)
except when travelling on the road (without enough water, or
just passing through a mosque), till you wash your whole
body.
And if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes after
answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with
women (by sexual relations) and you find no water, perform
Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and
hands
Truly, Allah is Ever Oft Pardoning, Oft Forgiving.
(Surah An-Nisa 4: Verse 43)

and If you are in a state of Janabah
(sexual impurity), purify yourselves.
(Surah Al Maidah 5: Verse 6)
4 Conditions of impurity make
Ghusl compulsory
The first two conditions are called Janabah:
1. Physical Intimacy between husband & wife
2. Wet dream
The other 2 conditions are:
3. Menstruation
4. Post-natal bleeding
Janabah Fact File
 Condition
of janabah is impure, not the
person
 It
is allowed to have contact with a jumbi
 Jumbi
can pass through a mosque
 Eating,
drinking, sleeping or doing urgent
work is allowed in janabah after doing
wudu
Physical Intimacy between
husband & wife
The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Marriage is my
tradition. He who rejects my tradition, is not
of me”
[Bukhari, Muslim]
Wet Dream
Sexually exciting dream is called wet dream
(Ihtilaam)
‫احَتالم‬
Noticing wetness on waking from sleep is a
sign of Ihtilaam – if there is no clear sign then
ghusl is not compulsory
Masturbation is not allowed. It is
permissible with extreme loathing only if
there is a real chance of fornication. Just
like haram food is allowed under extreme
circumstances.
Masturbation discharge makes ghusl
compulsory.
Post-natal bleeding
Ghusl is not compulsory
After:
Vaginal / internal medical check-up or
ultrasound
Menstruation
2:222
They ask you concerning women's courses. Say: They are a hurt and a
pollution: So keep away from women in their courses, and do not
approach them until they are clean. But when they have purified
themselves, ye may approach them in any manner, time, or place
ordained for you by Allah. For Allah loves those who turn to Him
constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean.
Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: Verse 222
