Why is Ghusl necessary يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱ ذ َِّل َين َءا َمنُو ْا ََل تَ ۡق َربُو ْا ٱ ذلصلَو َة َو َٱ ُ ۡنت ُس َكـ َرى َح ذَّت تَ ۡعلَ ُمو ْا ون َو ََل ُجنُ ًبا ا ذَل عَا ِب ِرى َس ِب ٍيل َح ذَّت تَ ۡغت َ ِسلُو ْۚا َوان ُك ُنت َما تَ ُقولُ َ ِ ِ ذم ۡر َ ٰٓ ض َٱ ۡو عَ ََل َس َف ٍر َٱ ۡو َجا ٰٓ َء َٱ َح ٌ۬د ِم ُنُك ِم َن ٱلۡ َغآٰٮطِ َٱ ۡو لَـ َم ۡس ُ ُت ِ ٱ ِلن َسا ٰٓ َء فَ َ َۡل َ َِت ُدو ْا َما ٰٓ ٌ۬ ًء فََتَ ََ ذم ُمو ْا ََ ِع ٌ۬ ًَدا ََ َِ ًبٌ۬ا فَأ ۡم َس ُوو ْا ُِو ُجو ِ ُ ُۡك يُك ا ذن ٱ ذ ََّلل ََك َن َع ُف اوا ََ ُف ًوًا. َو َٱيۡ ِد ُ ۡ ۗ ِ O you who believe! Approach not As Salah when you are in a drunken state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter, nor when you are in a state of Janabah, (i.e. in a state of sexual impurity and have not yet taken a bath) except when travelling on the road (without enough water, or just passing through a mosque), till you wash your whole body. And if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (by sexual relations) and you find no water, perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands Truly, Allah is Ever Oft Pardoning, Oft Forgiving. (Surah An-Nisa 4: Verse 43) …. نت ُجنُ ًبا فَا ذَرَّه ُذرو ْا ُْ … َوان ُك ِ and If you are in a state of Janabah (sexual impurity), purify yourselves. (Surah Al Maidah 5: Verse 6) 4 Conditions of impurity make Ghusl compulsory The first two conditions are called Janabah: 1. Physical Intimacy between husband & wife 2. Wet dream The other 2 conditions are: 3. Menstruation 4. Post-natal bleeding Janabah Fact File Condition of janabah is impure, not the person It is allowed to have contact with a jumbi Jumbi can pass through a mosque Eating, drinking, sleeping or doing urgent work is allowed in janabah after doing wudu Physical Intimacy between husband & wife The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Marriage is my tradition. He who rejects my tradition, is not of me” [Bukhari, Muslim] Wet Dream Sexually exciting dream is called wet dream (Ihtilaam) احَتالم Noticing wetness on waking from sleep is a sign of Ihtilaam – if there is no clear sign then ghusl is not compulsory Masturbation is not allowed. It is permissible with extreme loathing only if there is a real chance of fornication. Just like haram food is allowed under extreme circumstances. Masturbation discharge makes ghusl compulsory. Post-natal bleeding Ghusl is not compulsory After: Vaginal / internal medical check-up or ultrasound Menstruation 2:222 They ask you concerning women's courses. Say: They are a hurt and a pollution: So keep away from women in their courses, and do not approach them until they are clean. But when they have purified themselves, ye may approach them in any manner, time, or place ordained for you by Allah. For Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean. Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: Verse 222 What is menstruation? حيض Literal meaning: running What is menstruation? Man We did create from a quintessence (of clay); Then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed Surah Al-Mu’minun, 23: Verses 12 & 13 Place of rest (Uterus( 1 New lining replaces old. Bleeding for more than 15 days Bleeding in between normal cycle Do fresh wudu before each salah and pray as usual – however, for heavy bleeding ghusl before prayer is recommended. Performing salah Fasting Physical relationship between husband and wife Touching the text of the Qur’an Recitation of the Qur’an Staying in a mosque Circumambulation of the Ka’bah Things to Remember Missed salah does not have to be repeated Missed fast has to be kept afterwards Salah/fast breaks as soon as bleeding starts If bleeding stops at a salah time, & there is time for ghusl & takbeer, salah is obligatory In Ramadan, if bleeding stops during fajr time & there is time for ghusl & takbeer, fast is obligatory Things to Remember Learn to recognize the consistency of the normal discharge from menstrual discharge. Always mark your first date and last date as it helps to remember your cycle for the next month. Ruling on any issue related with menstruation depends on the last cycle in Shari’ah and Medicine. Narrated by Ayesha (RA: An Ansari woman asked the Prophet (PBUH) how to take a bath after finishing menses. When you rise up for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and lightly rub your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. And if you are in a state of Janabah, purify yourselves. And if you are sick or on a journey, or one of you comes from answering the call of nature, or you have had contact with women, and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub your faces and your hands with some of it. Allah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you and to complete His favour to you that you may be thankful. Water Water every where but can I make Wudu? Make me from amongst those who return to You often in repentance and make me from amongst those who remain clean and pure. (Tirmidhi) Things to Remember for Wudu Do not leave any body part dry Do remove nail polish before every wudu Do remove any waterproof makeup Do move rings/earrings when washing Do wash right hand/foot first Do not leave tap running Do not leave tap running Conditions that nullify ablution (wudu) Call of nature Passing Going gas to sleep Touching private parts Unconsciousness Case 1. You are making wudu and the telephone rings, you pick up the phone and then after 5 minutes realize you have to wash your feet. Do you just wash the feet? Face and hand wet Yes Face and hand are dry No Time elapsed Case 2. You are making wudu and a water fight starts with your sibling. Mom walks in and you all had to stop. Will you start the wudu again or continue from where you stopped? Question to ask your self Yes If skin wet, begin from where you left No Start again Do you remember your last action What about wiping over socks? Conditions: Wear them after Wudu or Ghusl Cover the whole feet including ankle Durable enough so you can walk in them Al-Masah ala al-Kuffayn Permissible for : Invalid when: Resident One day One night Traveler Three days Three nights Takes off the socks The expiration of the permissible time period. Any condition which requires Ghusl. Exceptions: Method of Masah • Wipe with a wet hand the top of the foot •Splints, cast or dressing: •Wudu is not a condition •Valid till the split or cast is needed Practical implication Its time to go to school, you have already done Fajr. You wore your socks and shoes with wudhu. There are extra classes so Zuhr Prayers have to be done at school. Your wudhu has broken. Do you have to take off socks and shoes for Wudhu at school? The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place for praying and a thing to perform Tayammum, therefore anyone of my followers can pray wherever the time of a prayer is due. (Bukhari) Do you Know how to do Tayammum? Full make up and nail polish You had done wudu before getting dressed But wudu breaks! Maghrib Salah time comes. So what can you do now? Tayammum? Can we do Tayammum instead of wudu? And if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women and you find no water, perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands (Nisa:43) Yes Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said: The key to Paradise is prayer and the key to prayer is cleanliness (Ablution).
