Basic Volleyball Rules
THE SERVE

Server must serve from behind the end line until after contact

Ball must be served with one hand, either underhand or overhand

The serve is GOOD if it hits the net and drops to the other side. If the serve does not
go over on the first try, the other team is awarded the point.

The opponent may not spike nor block the serve

The score must be announced before each serve with the serving teams score announced
first (i.e. “5 serving 7”)
SCORING

Rally scoring is used which means that there will be a point awarded on every serve of
the ball

The game will be played to 25 points

A team must win by 2 points (i.e. a team may win 31-29)
ROTATION

The team will rotate each time they win the serve, except the first time of the game

Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner
PLAYING THE GAME (VOLLEY)

Each team is allowed a maximum of 3 hits per side

A ball may be played off the net

A ball that touches the boundary line is good
VIOLATIONS

Failure to serve behind the end line

Failure to serve the ball over the net on the first try

Hitting the ball illegally including carrying, palming, throwing, punching

Touching the net

Failure to serve in the correct order

Failure to bump as the first hit
THINGS TO REMEMBER

The ball must be rolled UNDER the net; do not throw the ball over the net

Do not pull or tug on the net in between serves

Punching the ball with force is not allowed

Absolutely no kicking the ball

Players must stay in position, this will allow everyone to participate

Maintain space between players
