Use of translation, proof-reading and editorial services
1) Work submitted for assessment must be the student’s own work, both with regard to
content and language.
2) The use of third party translation services, including the use of translation software, is
prohibited. Contraventions of this prohibition will be considered academic misconduct
and dealt with accordingly.
3) The use of third party proof-reading or editorial services is permitted for assessed
work in non-foreign language modules only. The use of such services for
assessed work in foreign language modules will be considered academic misconduct
and dealt with accordingly.
4) Students are warned that any use of third party proof-reading or editing services must
not compromise their authorship of the work submitted, and, in particular, that the
substance of work must remain the student’s own. A proof-reader may identify
spelling and basic grammatical errors. Inaccuracies in academic content should not
be corrected nor should the structure of the piece of work be changed.
5) Students are also warned that they will be held responsible for work which they
submit, and that the use of third party services or software will not be accepted in
mitigation of any deficiencies in the work.
6) Students who use software for assistance with proof-reading or with editing their
work, or who seek assistance with proof-reading or with editing from third parties,
should be alert to the risks associated with such intervention, including the distortion
of intended meaning and the failure to use specialist terms appropriately.
7) The use of any third party proof-reading or editorial services must be acknowledged
on the submission form accompanying the submitted work.
