Red Cross Walk and Run to Save Lives Team Captain Packet www.redcross.org/philadelphiawalkandrun 215-405-8888 TEAM FUNDRAISING KIT 1 of 17 THANK YOU Thank you for participating in the Red Cross Walk and Run to Save Lives; you have joined thousands of everyday heroes who care about our local community. As a team captain, you play a vital role in saving lives right here in Southeastern Pennsylvania, one step at a time. You are one of the heroes crucial to the success of the Red Cross. The Red Cross Walk and Run is our biggest fund-raiser because of your enthusiasm and hard work. Your support helps to ensure that the Red Cross continues to be the place where a stranger gives you food and comfort, where someone you don’t even know uses CPR training to save your life, where neighbors shelter you after a fire, and where strangers give you their blood. We can’t do it without you. We have compiled this team fundraising kit, filled with ideas and helpful hints to get your team moving. The success of the Red Cross Walk and Run to Save Lives depends on each person, and as a team you multiply your impact. Thank you for joining us in giving hope to our neighbors and the promise of help for unexpected emergencies. All the best, Natalie Coney Special Events Coordinator 2 of 17 WHY WE WALK OR RUN We are walking or running to honor the thousands of heroes who, trained by the Red Cross, stand ready to help save your life. Every day, people are faced with frightening emergencies. From choking to cardiac arrest and fires to floods, each emergency is random and unpredictable. We are walking or running to ensure that the Red Cross is always able to answer the call for help, one family at a time, whenever disaster strikes. Your Gift at Work: $50 $75 $100 $500 $1,500 $2,500 Buys groceries for a displaced family for one week. Replaces prescription glasses melted by fire. Clothes a child who has lost everything from shoes to mittens. Helps pay medical expenses for an injured senior. The average cost of disaster relief for a family. Supports an Emergency Response Vehicle to care for people in a disaster. About the Red Cross The American Red Cross has a unique role in serving as the safety net for the American people in their hour of greatest need. As part of a network of 176 Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies worldwide, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter was founded in 1916 as a chartered unit of the American National Red Cross and serves the people of Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. Our Mission The Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter seeks to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to natural and human-caused disasters through the immediate mobilization of people and resources and the provision of community, workplace, and school-based training. What We Do Dollars raised support a variety of local Red Cross programs and services, including but not limited to: Emergency Services - Around the clock, every day of the year, we stand ready to respond to emergencies. We provide direct aid and comfort to families affected by disasters including food, shelter, clothing, mental health services, and other necessary relief. The Red Cross also educates our community on disaster and emergency preparedness. Health & Safety Training – We teach everything from CPR and first aid to lifeguard, nurse aid, and automated external defibrillator (AED) training. We teach vital skills that help others in the event of an emergency. Youth Services – We empower children’s lives by teaching them skills in personal and civic responsibility, healthy behavior, and preparedness through specialized programs, like CPR training. International Services - Reunite individuals displaced by conflict or natural disasters worldwide, while also educating the public on International Humanitarian Law, International Relief & Development, and Tracing & International Services. 3 of 17 WHO YOU’RE HELPING When you walk or run to save lives you are delivering help and hope. Every story is special. Read about people who have been touched by the Red Cross. Fire Safety Walkthrough’s Save Lives - Fire Safe Fridays is a new initiative to bring vital fire safety and pet fire safety materials to residents throughout the five-county region served by the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania (SEPA). Fire Safe Friday fire safety walkthroughs will be conducted every Friday at 2pm. They will be conducted in addition to the fire safety walkthroughs SEPA and local fire departments already conduct following each fatal fire. During fire safety walkthroughs, Red Cross and Red Paw volunteers will distribute 200 fire safety kits, which include tips for preventing fires in both English and Spanish and a 9-volt battery for smoke alarms. Missing smoke detectors or smoke detectors without a working battery are the leading cause of fire deaths. Providing fire safety tips and batteries are just two of many ways the Red Cross works year round to reduce fires and fire deaths in our community. A working smoke detector is a homeowner’s most important defense against fire injury or death. The Red Cross is committed to helping homeowners take this critical safety measure. Red Cross House 10th Anniversary - The idea for Red Cross House was conceived in 1994 in the wake of a devastating fire in North Philadelphia that destroyed dozens of homes. As the idea took shape, a comparison study was done looking at the longer term recovery for fire survivors entered the City of Philadelphia shelter system and those who were assisted by the Red Cross. The study showed that the Red Cross had more success helping survivors move on with their lives in a timely manner. “Red Cross House keeps families together during a stressful time in their lives when they need that support most,” said SEPA CEO Judge Renée Hughes, “The Red Cross strives to help these families recover faster and keep them from entering the shelter system.” 4 of 17 KEYS TO SUCCESS Be creative, have fun, and ask everyone you meet to support your effort. Whatever you choose, the key is to get started early! Build your team Recruit as many people for your team as you can. Do you know someone who likes to jog or is a fitness fanatic? Encourage co-workers, friends, classmates, neighbors and family to join your team. Emphasize the Red Cross Walk and Run to Save Lives as an opportunity for them to make a difference in their community. Engage people with various connections – they can open doors to new donors and more team members. Register online. As a team captain you can create a personalized web page to set team goals, recruit and communicate with your walkers and runners and track your donations and pledges. Friends, family, and business associates are able to sponsor you online in a secure process where they will receive an instant tax receipt and see their contribution applied to your team’s goal. Visit www.redcross.org/philadelphiawalkandrun to get started today. Set your goals (team & individual) Set fundraising goals for the team - make it challenging but realistic. A large but attainable goal will help your walkers feel proud and motivated. Increase last year’s amount. What did you raise last year? Set this year’s goal 10% higher. Work with your team to set individual goals - many people start at $200. Lead by example. Share with your team members what your goal will be; this will help encourage others to reach for the stars. Announce your team goal so that everyone knows what you are working towards. Show your enthusiasm Show your commitment and encourage others to give. Share stories about why you and your group are supporting the Red Cross. Do you know someone whose life was saved by CPR or an AED? Do you know someone who found comfort with the Red Cross after a fire or flood? Make team T-shirts, posters, flyers, and more. Motivate and encourage your team by communicating regularly. Promote your team’s work. Share your story with your community paper, write an article in your school/corporate newsletter, or hang flyers at local community organizations. Provide resources for your team Share information about the Red Cross and the Red Cross Walk and Run to Save Lives. What motivates you? It could motivate others! Track the progress of individuals and your team, and let everyone know how they are doing. Utilize the resources on the Red Cross Walk and Run website www.redcross.org/philadelphiawalkandrun Offer incentives. Many teams offer a day off from work or an ice cream party as an incentive to individual team members or to the entire group for reaching fundraising goals. 5 of 17 KEYS TO SUCCESS (CONT.) Spread the word Host a kick-off event at a local restaurant. Create your team’s web page on www.crowdrise.com/walkandruntosavelives and help your team members create their personal web pages. Combine the talents and time of everyone you know. Who’s good at making posters? Who’s good at writing a letter? Who’s the best person to make phone calls? Draft a letter for your boss, principal, or CEO to sign, inviting everyone to join together, or obtain permission to send an email on his or her behalf. Use your personal web page to send e-mails asking for support. Add your Walk and Run information to the signature of your emails and faxes. Make the ask Ask your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, teachers, etc. You’ll be surprised how many people will ask what they can do to help. People want to help others just as you do. Request your sponsors to donate rather than pledge. This eliminates the task of collecting pledges after the event. Import your personal address book to www.crowdrise.com/walkandruntosavelives and create a personal email appeal to send to all your contacts in one fell swoop! A link to your personal web page will be included. Write a letter to your vendors, friends, associates, etc. asking them to sponsor you. You can find a sample letter in this kit. Carry a sponsor form with you wherever you go. Research if companies honor matching gifts to make twice the impact! Make sure to get the company’s matching gift form to fill out, and deliver it with your donation. Follow-up with your asks. Don’t be afraid to ask again – just ask with a smile. Host a Fundraiser Organize a fundraiser to generate excitement while raising money for a good cause. Promote your fundraiser. The more people who know about it, the more successful it will be. Approach a local business to host a fundraiser to support your efforts. Will your hairdresser host a cut-a-thon for you? Will your favorite waiter or waitress donate their tips to you one night? Will your favorite hang-out host a Red Cross night and donate the cover charge to you? Reaching your fundraising goal can be simple. Follow this technique to help get you to your goal: Sponsor yourself for $25……………………………………………………………………….……….……….…..$25 Ask 3 family members to sponsor you for $20 each…………………………………………..………….$60 Ask 3 friends for $5 each………………………………………….…………………………..……….……….…..$15 Ask 2 businesses you frequent for $50 each…………………………………………………...…………..$100 Total Raised $200 6 of 17 TEAM FUNDRAISING Have a food sale - breakfast foods, lunch, baked goods, soft pretzels, and snacks are always a good way to raise money. Hold a car wash in your neighborhood. Fill a jar full of candy or another kind of display and have people guess the amount of contents or weight for $1 or $5 per guess – the winner gets the jar. Host an auction - ask for donations of unique items, then display the items at the auction and have your friends, family, and neighbors bid on them. Host a yard sale - do you have items cluttering up your home? Ask everyone to gather their items, put up signs, and get rid of those extra items, all while raising money for the Red Cross. Dine Out for Disasters - ask a restaurant you frequent to donate a portion of their proceeds one day, or create a special Red Cross item on their menu. Ask your favorite waiter or waitress to donate their tips to you for one night. Cut-a-thon - ask your hairdresser to donate $5-$10 per haircut. Host a 50-50 - have everyone donate $10 and give them a raffle ticket. At the end of the night pull a winner – they get half the money and you get the other.(Raffle license maybe required) Host a dinner party and have everyone bring a donation in lieu of a hostess gift. Host a book sale – gather gently used books, movies and games and re-sell them for $2-3 each. 7 of 17 WORKPLACE FUNDRAISING Offer incentives - many teams offer a day off or a pizza party to team members who reach their individual fundraising goal, or if the group reaches its team goal (with permission from their employers, of course). Dress Red Days - have people pay $5 per day to dress in red or to wear jeans to work for a day. Or, host a theme day, such as a “Dress UP Day,” where people wear their best to work. Mail – send a solicitation mailing to all of your vendors and clients. They will love to hear that you are supporting a good cause. Challenge – have your boss challenge everyone to raise a minimum of $200. If everyone accomplishes this, then your boss will get a pie in the face, dress up in costume, or wash employees’ cars at lunch. Be creative, but make sure you attain proper approval! Place a container at your workstation, and have everyone drop in his or her change at the end of the day or after lunch. Have a food sale at your office – breakfast foods, lunch, baked goods, soft pretzels and snacks are always a good way to raise money. Host an auction or yard sale in your office common room - ask for donations of unique items and used books/movies, display them at the auction and have your coworkers bid on them. Dine Out for Disasters - ask a restaurant or food cart vendor that you frequent to help out. They can donate a portion of their proceeds one day, create a special Red Cross item on their menu, or donate their tips to you. Host a 50-50 – have everyone donate $10 and give them a raffle ticket. At the end of the night, pull a winner – they get half the money and you get the other. March Madness – hold a basketball pool during March Madness. Charity Golf Outing – host a golf outing with your colleagues, vendors and clients. Ask for a specific donation above the cost of the golfing. Matching Gifts - ask your Human Resources Department if you have a matching gift policy. Make sure to get your company’s matching gift form to fill out and bring with you to the Walk and Run for any donation you make. Or you can ask your company if they will match the total amount that your team raises for the Walk and Run. Make twice the impact! 8 of 17 YOUTH FUNDRAISING Have a food sale – breakfast foods, lunch, baked goods, soft pretzels and snacks are always a good way to raise money. Hold a Penny War - Students donate their loose change. The object is to get pennies into your teams jar and to put silver into your competition’s jar. Count the pennies and subtract the amount of silver from the total penny amount. The team with the resulting highest amount of pennies wins the total amount collected. Have students collect any monetary denomination – pennies, dimes, quarters, or dollars. For each penny that is brought in, tape a paper cut out of a person on the walls of the classroom or school hallway. Each paper cut-out represents one person who was affected by a disaster. This visual can help children better understand the magnitude of a disaster and lives affected. School sporting events - Set up a booth outside the gates; solicit funds from those tailgating. (Check for campus regulations on fundraising). Dress Red Days - Have kids donate $1 - $5 per day to dress red, or for the ability to wear jeans to school for a day or to dress for a certain theme, such as “Crazy Hat Day”. Challenge – Students donate their loose change. Each teacher or administrator has a bucket. The object is to get the most money into your favorite teacher’s bucket. At the end, the lucky teacher with the most money in their bucket will get a pie in the face or have to dress up in costume. Use your creativity and make sure to get approval. Host a yard sale in your gym. Collect used books, DVDs, movies and video games to sell. Do extra chores - Offer to walk your neighbors’ dogs, rake their leaves, shovel snow, and more, for a donation. Make arts and crafts and sell them to family and friends. Reading for Relief – Ask for donations for each page of a book a child reads, or each book a child reads depending on their age. Dance for Disaster Relief - Hold a school-wide dance to raise money for disaster relief. Set a fee for attending that dance that will be donated after the event. Host a Talent Show - Hold a school-wide talent show to raise money. Set a fee for attending that will be donated after the show 9 of 17 SAMPLE PROMOTION Personalize one of the articles below in your company newsletter, community newspaper, or school newspaper. Everyday Heroes Everyday heroes make up the Red Cross - a place where people come together to help each other. This is where a stranger will give you food and comfort, neighbors shelter you after a fire, and someone you don’t even know will save your life. Elaine Hardy Thwaites signed up for a CPR/AED training class to arm herself with the knowledge to save lives. She didn’t know then that the class would save her own. Elaine attended an Emergency Services CPR/AED training class taught by Robin Rabinowitz and Jennifer Petitt, both AmeriCorps members serving at SEPA Chapter. Partway through the class, Elaine lost consciousness; she had gone into cardiac arrest. The instructors acted fast. Robin performed CPR while Jennifer told someone to call 911 and went for help. She returned with two Red Cross employees, who are also both trained EMTs. Peter Wine and Lisa Forrest performed CPR and used SEPA Chapter’s AED to shock Elaine’s heart, which had stopped beating. By the time the paramedics arrived, Peter and Lisa had Elaine’s heart pumping again. Paramedics took Elaine to the hospital where she regained consciousness within two days. Thanks to effective Red Cross training, these individuals were able to successfully respond to an emergency and save a life. You, too, can be a hero and help the Red Cross save lives by stepping out for the Red Cross Walk and Run this April. Your participation in the Red Cross Walk and Run – as a walker, a runner, a team captain, a volunteer, or a donor – will allow the Red Cross to provide immediate lifesaving aid and help families take the first steps toward recovery.
