materiality and architectural form/space. We also emphasize elaborating architectural thought
while tacking issues of spatial organization and context.

PROJECTS
This semester you will work on two projects in Yağcılar, Urla. In both projects, you will work in
groups.
PROJECT I: AN OBSERVATION TOWER
The first project is to design and observation tower in Yağcılar. This structure will allow the
public to observe Yağcılar and its surroundings from a vintage point of your choice. In order to
decide the location of this vintage point, you will have to study the context carefully. You will
also decide the materials of the tower. Again, the context can provide some insights for this.
Finally, you are free to decide the dimensions of this tower. That means, at a minimum, you will
have to make certain decisions regarding its floor area and height. However, keep in mind, the
resulting structure will represent your interpretation of an observation tower.
SITE
The location of the tower will be within the shaded circle below:
SUBMISSION TIME
The submission time is in the schedule above. We do not accept late submissions.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The submission consists of a portfolio, physical model and a presentation board. You can find
further details on the course’s website.

PROJECT II: A VISITOR’S HUT FOR YAGCILAR

Storage facilities
Heating facilities
Bicycle parking
We will announce the exact location on the course’s website.
There will be two submissions for the visitors’ hut: The first is going to be mid-review; and the
second is going to be the final submission. We will announce the submission requirements on the
course’s website. Again, we will not accept late submissions.
SKETCH EXAMS
There will be three (3) sketch exams on the dates shown in the schedule. In these exams, you will
work on a design problem individually. We will announce the details of the problem on the exam
date. You must be physically present in the studio on the exam date, with the required drawing
tools. Note that these exams make up 30% of your semester grade.

PROJECT GRADING CRITERIA
We will evaluate your projects using the following criteria:
1 Content
1.1 Materiality and form/space
1.2 Conceptual approach
1.3 Spatial organization
1.4 Context
1.5 Novelty
2 Presentation
2.1 Completeness of submission requirements
2.2 Craftsmanship (Both artistic and technical)
3 Progress
3.2 Attendance
3.3 Regular presentation of progress
As you can see above, there are three categories of criteria: content, presentation and progress.
Read the following information very carefully and make sure to ask your studio instructors if
these criteria are not clear.
CONTENT
Content related criteria are fivefold. The first one is about how materials relate to form and space.
This means that you must pay attention to the specific qualities of the materials that you work
with. For example, what type of a structural system does this material work well with? How do
you assemble this material together? The second criterion is about the underlying ideas of the
design process. Try to ask yourself: how do you explain and elaborate your design approach?
Thirdly, we expect that you “solve” the functional relationships between spaces you propose.
How do you organize the spaces with respect to each other? How do you group them together in
proximity? The next criterion is about context. What is the relationship of your design to the site
specific parameters? How does your project relate –or not relate– to its immediate environment?
Finally, we consider if the project has novel aspirations or not. This takes willingness to commit
to complexity and to challenges driven solely by you.

PRESENTATION
There are two presentation related criteria. We expect that you completed all of the submission
requirements. Incomplete submissions may not receive a jury review. And of course, the
submitted work should be visually appealing and technically accurate.
PROGRESS
The final group of criteria is about the project progress. Note that we will mostly consider the
progress of your projects as opposed to the number of days you attended the studio.
