Found objects, clothing, hats, shoes and purses are among the materials that Khaki uses to create her new paintings and installations. Khaki’s fascination with the human figure has taken her to another level in interpreting the human form in sculptural reliefs. In a painting installation series titled “Attached #1-6,” painted headless female torsos are attached to painted boards of the same colors, some accompany other painted objects like article of clothing and shoes. “The boldly painted faceless female form, characterizes the universal human who is attached, literally, not only to the boards that is holding it, but metaphorically to all worldly attachments, especially materialistic attachments to unessential objects. We collect and add more things to the pile we already have, often without wanting to share. In a broader sense, as humans we are becoming more and more selfinterested. As a result, this self-interested attitude could lead us to an era of social Darwinism or every man for himself,” as Khaki explains. Nahid Khaki is an Iranian-born artist who has lived in the United States since the early 1970s. Khaki has been active as an artist for the past three decades. Since 2005, she has been the director of Khaki Gallery in Wellesley, where she has exhibited works by many emerging artists. Khaki gallery expanded to the Boston South End art district in 2008.
