GraysonCollegeCanstructionRulesandRegulationsforTeams
GraysonCollegeCanstructionisacompetitionamongstmembersoftheGCcampuscommunityasameansof
collectingnonperishablefooditemsfordonationtoalocalfoodbankandtostockourcampusfoodpantry.
Faculty,staff,administrators,andstudents(includingstudentorganizations)areencouragedtoformteamsand
participateinourCanstructioncompetition.Teamswillusenonperishableitemstobuildastructure,whichwill
bejudgedagainstallentries.Theteamsdesignatedas1stand2ndplacewillwintheprizesspecifiedbelow.
Thereisnolimittoteamsize;however,prizeswillbeawardedonateambasis.Itwillbeuptotheteamto
determinehowtoshare/allocatetheprize.
Teamsareresponsibleforcollectingnonperishableitemsforthepurposesofbuildingtheirstructure.Thoughitis
called“Canstruction,”anynonperishableitemsarepermitted.Somethingstokeepinmind:
• Foodcansofallsizesmaybeused.Ifusingplasticcontainers,makesuretheycantaketheweight
ofcansfromabove.
• Noglasscontainersarepermitted.
• Nopetfoodoralcoholicbeveragesarepermitted.
• Pleaseavoidsodaandjunkfood.Becausetheitemsusedwillbedonatedtoafoodbank,thefocus
shouldbeonfoodwithhighnutritionalvalue.
• Allfooditemsmustbeunopened.Labelsmustremainintactandlegible.
• Useofboxedandbaggedfooditemsispermitted,butcareshouldbetakeninthebuildingofthe
structurethattheitemsarenotcrushed,torn,ordamagedinanyway.
• Noexpiredfooditemsshouldbeused.
Inbuildingyourstructure,pleaseremembertheseguidelines:
• Themaximumsizeforastructureis10ftlongx10ftwidex10fthigh.Structuresmustfitentirely
withinthesedimensions.
• Propsarestronglydiscouraged.Judgespreferpurefoodstructures.Trytosolvealldesign
problemswithnonperishablefooditems.
• Structuresmustbeself-supporting.Noboards,tubing,sheetmetal,etc.Permissible:one-quarter
inchthickfoam-core,cardboard,plywood,Plexiglas,threadedrod–forthepurposeoflevelingor
balancingmaterials,butnotasloadbearing.
• Velcro,clearanddouble-sidedtapemaybeused.
• High-tensionrubberbands,nylonstring,wire,andtie-backsarepermissible.
• Nopermanentadhesivesmaybeused.
• Teamsareresponsibleforleavingtheirsite“broom-clean.”
Thecollectionofnonperishableitemsmaybeginnow.Teamswillneedtofindaplacetostoretheircollected
itemsasthebuildspacewillnotbedesignateduntilNovember.Teamswillneedtoregistertoparticipateinthe
[email protected].
TeamsmaybeginbuildingtheirstructuresintheirassignedareasonWednesday,November9at8:00AM.
StructuresmustbecompletedbyWednesday,November16at5:00PM.Teamswillbepermittedtobuildtheir
structuresduringnormalhoursofoperation.
JudgingwilltakeplaceonThursday,November17.Thefirstplaceteamwillwin$200andthesecondplaceteam
willwin$100.Theprizeswillbeawardedperteam,notperindividualontheteam.NOTE:Ifthewinningteams
arefromGCclubs/organizationsthenthoseclubs/organizationshavetheoptionofhavingtheprizemoney
depositedintotheirclubaccounts.

Note:AllnonperishablefooditemsusedinCanstructionwillbedonatedtoanareafoodbank(thatGrayson
Collegehasidentified)andthecampusfoodpantry.

Becreativeinyourcollectionofnonperishableitems.Storesmaydonateitems.Askfamilyandfriends.Maybe
teacherswillasktheirclassestohelpcollectitems.Theskyisthelimit!Andrememberthatwearedoingthisto
helpstudentsonourcampus,aswellasthoseinourcommunity.Texashasthethirdhighestfoodinsecurityrate
inthenation.Thisisagreatopportunitytohelpothersandhavealittlefunwhiledoingso.
