My name is Anna and I am a final year BVetMed student at the Royal Veterinary College. I am interested
in applying for a role as a veterinary surgeon in a small animal, first opinion practice, to start when I
graduate in July 2017.
I have worked since I was 16 through to the present day in various part-time jobs and before this had
completed numerous weeks of work experience in veterinary practices, on farms, and in rescue centres.
The reason for these commitments alongside education is that I love responsibility and independence,
something that work gives me in abundance.
I have received many comments over the years praising my commitment, positive attitude and most
notably my enthusiasm. During rotations, feedback continuously highlighted interest and passion in my
day-to-day work, good knowledge with eagerness to learn, and empathy exhibited with both patients and
people. Several members of staff commented that I will make a great vet, something that fills me with
pride! I always have a positive outlook on life, come to work with a smile on my face and put my heart
and soul into everything I do.
Within the veterinary field:
- I have a passion for surgery, something that has interested me since a young age. I love working with
my hands, and had a flare for design technology during my schooling career. Since being able to
perform surgery during EMS and on rotations, my skills have come on in leaps and bounds.
o I am confident in performing neutering procedures unaided, having had extensive experience
doing dog and cat castrates and spays over the past couple of years, and the general surgical
skills that come with performing these operations
o I am confident performing lumpectomies, having performed several on the trunk and distal
limbs on EMS
o I am confident performing dental procedures (including extractions, using a dental drill,
scaling and polishing) on both dogs and cats
o Under supervision and with an assistant, I have performed two pyometra removals and an
exploratory laparotomy/enterotomy
o I have been an assistant in many procedures, including leg/tail amputations, caesareans,
fracture repairs, splenectomies, organ biopsies, etc.
Although my passion lies with soft tissue surgery, I am eager to expand my orthopaedic skills.
- I am confident performing consultations, having done many both independently and under
supervision on EMS and during rotations. My history-taking and rapport-building skills have been
praised by vets, underlining my love of talking to people and building relationships.
- I have a particular interest in ultrasound, having gained experience in first opinion, emergency and
referral environments on dogs, cats and horses, again being complimented for my fast development
of diagnostic skills and understanding. I have performed ultrasound-guided procedures additionally.
-
-
I enjoy emergency work, with night shifts in the emergency room at the Queen Mother Hospital
being one of the highlights of my rotations
I have an interest in reptiles and birds, currently owning a bearded dragon and having owned
parakeets in the past. With the love comes a wealth of both owner and veterinary related knowledge
on the species. I am eager to learn more about exotic animals.
I love teaching, enjoying imparting knowledge as a part of previous jobs (particularly as a student
ambassador) and while on EMS placements with younger students. As a vet, this is something I want
to develop with veterinary medicine and nursing students. I am very patient and supportive as a
teacher.
Key Attributes:

experience both in previous part-time jobs and in education
