DURING A GAME. -- NIGHT

INT LUXURY BOX --STADIUM-- NIGHT
2
As Eli watches and orchestrates, Peter makes the rounds,
shaking hands, smiling and looking every bit in his element.
He's feeling good, is on his way out of the box when he bumps
into Childs and his entourage on their way in.
PETER
No votes here, Childs.
all locked up.
I got 'em
CHILDS
Well, you would know about lock
up.
ELI
That's funny.
CHILDS
So's your campaign.
PETER
We'll let the voters decide who
they want for State's Attorney.
BOX OWNER
Glenn. Come here. There's someone
I want you to meet.
Smug Glenn off.
ELI
I hope the crab cakes make him
sick. Come on, I've got an idea.

INT. LIVING ROOM/DINING ROOM -- ALICIA'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT
Alicia works at the table, Zach on his laptop. Grace is the
only one who seems to be paying attention to the game on the
screen.
GRACE
Hey, there's Dad.
Alicia and Zach look up.
ALICIA
Turn it up.
ON TV SCREEN they see Peter being interviewed by a local
reporter.

2.
PETER
This race is about people wanting
a State's Attorney who's committed
to making this a safer city. I
know this city. I love this city.
I'm the right man for the job.
Peter moves off.
ZACH
Dad's good.
ALICIA
That he is.
BACK TO TV SCREEN...
REPORTER #1
There you have it. Peter Florick,
making his case for why he should
be the State's Attorney for Cook
County. The election is just four
weeks away.
Florick is trailing
in the polls but has been gaining
on current State's Attorney, Glenn
Childs. If Florick wins it would
be a dramatic comeback after last
year's sex scandal...
Grace mutes it.
It's late.
tomorrow.
ALICIA
You guys have school
GRACE
I really want to see the second
half of the fourth quarter.
Alicia and Zach both look at her with surprise.
What?
GRACE (CONT'D)
It's interesting.
ALICIA
Since when?
ZACH
Since she got assigned to work on
a history project with Clint
Jockstrap, the running back at
school.
GRACE
Shut up. Never mind.

LOCKER ROOM -- STADIUM -- NIGHT
4
Chicago team is celebrating. PLAYERS are exuberant. A couple
kneel in prayer. STONE JORDAN (30's), the quarterback, is
being interviewed by a flirtatious, pretty African-American
reporter, BETHANY TATUM (20'S).
BETHANY
What made the difference tonight,
Stone? How were you guys able to
get this done?
STONE
I was seeing everything and when
I'm playing like that... I don't
think anyone can stop us. Now
we're going to the playoffs!
BETHANY
Enjoy the win. You guys earned
it. Back to you, Bob. There's
gonna be some partying tonight.
Team whoops it up. DIXON HICKS, (20's), a wide receiver,
watches in the background. He doesn't seem to like the
attention the quarterback is getting.
5
INT PUBLIC AREA --STADIUM -- NIGHT
5
Peter, Eli and some other staff now down with the masses.
Peter still glad handing, meeting the people. He sees Will
cross by with an attractive woman. Will doesn't see him.
Two AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN (40's) seem to be approaching but
at the last minute walk past Peter without shaking his hand,
a snub. Eli notices. Peter moves on to the next person.
6
INT. BACK HALLWAY --STADIUM -- NIGHT
Peter, Eli and staff grabbing a private moment.
squirts hand sanitizer into Peter's hand.
ELI
We're so close to getting the Trib's
endorsement, my nipples are actually
hard.
PETER
Not everybody was happy to see me.
ELI
African Americans will come back.
Just keep doing your thing. It
might've helped if the little missus
had been here.

Staff member

PETER
It's a process.
ELI
We're running out of time. Buy
her a diamond, a house. Crawl
across broken glass on your face
if you have to. We need her now.
7
INT. ALICIA'S BEDROOM --ALICIA'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT
Alicia is asleep in bed. A soft KNOCK on the door. She
doesn't stir. Peter cracks open the door and watches her for
a moment. She looks lovely. He remembers a time when he
would've gotten into bed with her without even thinking.
Those days are long gone. She wakes. Knows he needs to
download after a night like this. She's not surprised to see
him.
ALICIA
How'd it go?
PETER
There's still some work to be done.
Childs was there, too. I can't
even tell you how badly I want to
beat him.
ALICIA
I think I know. What happens if
you don't? What are you gonna do
if you don't win?
PETER
I'm not planning on not winning.
ALICIA
You are so stubborn.
PETER
The whole time tonight I was
thinking about my first campaign.
ALICIA
Seems like a lifetime ago.
PETER
You were great. You handled the
mayor's wife like a pro.
ALICIA
I just kept feeding her desserts.
I swear chocolate souffle got you
the mayor's endorsement that year.

5.
PETER
Remember what happened when we got
back from the correspondent's
dinner?

ALICIA
I remember.

It's late, Peter.
PETER
I saw Will at the game,

ALICIA
Is that what you came in here to
tell me?
PETER
I came in here to tell you tonight
went well but I missed you. It
would have been amazing if you had
been there.
ALICIA
I'm here, Peter. That's the best
I can do right now.
PETER
How long am I supposed to just be
grateful?
Alicia's phone rings.
Hi Will.
She answers.
ALICIA
No, I'm up.
Peter leaves.
8
INT. STONE'S APARTMENT -- LUXURY HIGH RISE BLDG -- NIGHT
8
The apartment is ultra modern, and expensively tacky. There
is football memorabilia all around. Looks like a fourteen
year old boy's idea of an awesome apartment. Think huge TV's
and every video game console known to man. Will is sitting
beside Stone who looks like he's had a rough night. He seems
scared and is trying his best to be respectful. Several police
officers are questioning him. Alicia is standing nearby,
jotting down some notes.
DETECTIVE #1
What time did you leave the club?
STONE
Around 2, 2:30.
6.
DETECTIVE #1
Did you have sex at the club?
WILL
He's not going to answer that.
DETECTIVE #1
Is is true that you and your friends
were buying drinks for women?
WILL
He's not going to answer that.
Okay, guys. I think we're done
here. We appreciate you doing the
questioning here instead of the
station but it's 4 o'clock in the
morning.
Will is expecting some resistance, doesn't get any.
DETECTIVE #1
No problem. It's not like we don't
know where to find you. Thanks
for your cooperation.
Cops start packing up to go.
UNIFORM COP
Excuse me. Do you think I could
get an autograph for my kid? He's
a big fan.
STONE
Sure thing.
Uncomfortable, Alicia watches as he signs autographs for first
one cop, then a couple of others. One of them breaks out the
camera phone and they pose for a few shots.
ALICIA
(to Will)
This doesn't seem like a good idea.
WILL
Better fans than haters.

EXT. TRIBUNE BUILDING -- (NEXT DAY)-- DAY
9
Typical rush hour traffic on a Chicago morning.
10
INT. WORK STATION ROW--LAW FIRM -- DAY
Alicia stifles a yawn, juggles files and a big mug of coffee
as she heads towards the conference room. Kalinda joins her.
10
7.
KALINDA
I heard you met Stone Jordan last
night. What's he like?
ALICIA
I wasn't meeting him at his best.
You like football? I never imagined
you to be a fan of anything.
KALINDA
I'm not really, just curious.
What are the odds this is anything
more than this woman trying to get
paid?
ALICIA
Beats me. You seem to have already
formed an opinion.
KALINDA
I worked a case once with a pro
baseball player. The woman made
up the charges, was just trying to
extort money. Ruined his life.
He was a decent guy.
ALICIA
Friend of yours?
KALINDA
Something like that. I bet this
is shady. Wanna bet? Fifty bucks.
ALICIA
No thanks.
KALINDA
Saw Peter on the news. You know
it will be a miracle if he wins.
ALICIA
I'm fine either way.
KALINDA
Does Peter know that?
Alicia heads into the conference room without answering.

Grace comes out, looking a little different.
Are you...?
PETER (CONT'D)
Is that make up?
GRACE
What?
ZACH
You look ridiculous.
PETER
I mean. Are you allowed?
Zip it.
GRACE
Are you serious? Come on, I thought
you said we had to leave now.
Peter can handle jail time, a sex scandal, a street fight
masquerading as an election but his teenage daughter in adult
makeup is beyond him.
12
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM --LAW FIRM -- DAY
Will, Kalinda, Diane and Alicia are going over the details of
the case.
WILL
The woman who's pressing charges
is the reporter who was at the
game last night.
He turns on the tv and shows a FREEZE FRAME of Bethany, the
female reporter from earlier.
WILL (CONT'D)
Apparently, they met up at a club.
Police report says they had some
drinks, talked. She says our client
followed her out. He asked if she
wanted to see his car. She said
sure, claims he then forced her to
have sex.
KALINDA
In the car?
WILL
On the hood, apparently.
Nice.
DIANE
Anybody see anything?
WILL
Not that we know of.
12
9.
WILL (CONT'D)
There were several members of the
team, and Stone's entourage at the
club --celebrating the win. Bethany
was there with a couple of her
friends. The cops are conducting
interviews as we speak.
KALINDA
I'm on it. I'll see what I can
find out about Bethany Tatum. If
we're lucky, she's a known psycho.
WILL
We're never that lucky.
Kalinda out.
WILL (CONT'D)
(to Diane)
You okay taking the lead on this?
I think it's good to have women up
front.
DIANE
Fine. When do we get the results
of the rape kit?
WILL
Cops will send it over as soon as
it's done being processed.
Phone/intercom buzzes.
SONIA
They're here.
(V.O.)
WILL
Show them in. Stone and a
representative from the team.
Sonia brings in Stone and Jim MacBride (40s), team rep.
WILL (CONT'D)
Jim Macbride heads up the teams PR
department. I'm sure you all know
Stone Jordan. This is Diane
Lockhart and Alicia Florick.
JIM
(impatient)
Where are we?
WILL
Just going over the police report.
He offers it to Jim.
10.
JIM
Seen it. A lot of fans in the
department.
ALICIA
We saw them getting autographs
last night. You should probably
tone that down. Won't look good
if it gets out.
DIANE
What is the rape kit going to show
us? Are you in any position to
deny sex?
STONE
No. But I didn't rape her. I'm
not trying to brag but me having
to rape someone is like a man who
owns a grocery store, stealing
food. Completely unnecessary. I
could've hooked up with five
shorties who were there last night.
Bethany and me have had this flirty
thing going on for a while. I
finally decided to give her some
play.
ALICIA
Why do you think she filed the
charge?
STONE
I wish I knew. Maybe she's looking
to get paid. Maybe she's trying
to get attention. Pump up her
career. I have no idea.
JIM
The players are warned about these
kinds of situations from the moment
they come into the league. Some
listen.
STONE
Is there any way we can keep this
quiet? I've got a wife. This is
not a conversation I want to have.
DIANE
Where is your wife?
STONE
She hates Chicago. She stays in
Arizona with the kids during the
season.
11.
JIM
Is there any way to make this go
away? Offer her money?
WILL
We're beyond that now.
ALICIA
I suggest you have the conversation
with your wife. You don't want
her blindsided.
STONE
That's funny. Did you see that
hit I took in the fourth?
ALICIA
Not really into football.
JIM
Do whatever you have to do to make
this go away. In two weeks, we
have our first playoff game in
five years. Mr. Crater would like
this in the history books before
then. He doesn't want this to
overshadow his team's success.
WILL
No warrant has been issued yet.
Take that as a good sign.
13
INT. RECEPTION --LAW FIRM -- (HOUR LATER) --DAY
Alicia is walking Stone and Jim out.
with the owner.
Jim is on the phone
ALICIA
We'll be in touch. Call if you
have any questions or anything
comes up and of course, don't
discuss this.
STONE
Right.
JIM
We've got a good team on it, sir.
(hangs up)
Mr. Crater wants to see you before
you go to practice.
STONE
Get called to the principal's office
much?
13
12.
ALICIA
Never.
STONE
I like to have a good time.
not a bad guy.
I'm
ALICIA
I didn't say you were.
STONE
I saw the way you were looking at
me. I'd like my team to be behind
me a hundred percent. I didn't do
what she's saying I did. You know
how women can be, right?
ALICIA
Excuse me?
STONE
That thing with your husband.
You, of all people, know sometimes
women use sex to set a guy up.
ALICIA
Let's just focus our attention on
your defense.
14
INT. DIANE'S OFFICE --LAW FIRM -- DAY
The Marlboro man himself is waiting as Diane arrives.
MCVEIGH
I heard a couple of assistants
saying something about Stone Jordan
being here this morning.
DIANE
Bummed you forgot your autograph
book?
MCVEIGH
I'm not into professional sports.
Over grown children making
ridiculous sums of money and
behaving like cretans.
DIANE
Really?
MCVEIGH
Just when you thought you had me
all figured out.
DIANE
And you're here because...
14
13.
MCVEIGH
You left these at my place.
He places two earrings on her desk.
MCVEIGH (CONT'D)
They're the ones your father gave
you, right? Didn't want you to
worry when you realized they were
missing.
She's touched but they don't really roll like that.
Thank you.
DIANE
You could have called.
MCVEIGH
I have a favor to ask.
DIANE
Shoot.
MCVEIGH
I have to attend a charity banquet
and if I don't bring a date I'm
going to spend the whole evening
fending off Bunny Chatsworth.
DIANE
(laughs)
You want to use me for protection?
What's the charity?
MCVEIGH
Does it really matter?
DIANE
Yes.
MCVEIGH
A More Moral America.
DIANE
Two words for you.
15
INT.
Hell no.
DINER -- DAY
Peter is talking to a group of FACTORY WORKERS at a lunch
time meeting. Eli and staff hang back. The workers are more
interested in the free lunch than listening to Peter.
PETER
The right State's Attorney can
have a huge impact on the life of
the average working man.

14.
PETER (CONT'D)
I can promise you that I will do
everything I can to make sure your
pension funds are handled properly.
I'll go after any employer who
tries to cut corners on safety and
responsibility.
The workers keep eating.
PETER (CONT'D)
Thanks for your time. Enjoy the
burgers.

Let's Eli have
PETER
This is the best you can do. I
might as well be talking to this
lamppost.
ELI
The lamppost can't vote. I admit
the crowd could have been livelier
but hello, welcome to the trenches.
PETER
We're trailing by double digits.
We're not going to make it up like
this.
ELI
I have no intention of losing this
election. That would ruin my
record.
PETER
We need a bigger stage.
ELI
You could get caught with another
hooker, that would put us back on
page one.

EXT. LUXURY HIGH RISE APARTMENT BUILDING -- NIGHT
17
18
INT. STONE'S APARTMENT W/HALLWAY-- NIGHT
18
Alicia and Kalinda are meeting with Stone, going over the
report of the rape kit. Stone fidgets throughout, shoots
baskets, does pull ups. This is starting to get to him.
15.
ALICIA
The rape kit is as we expected.
The report showed the presence of
semen. The DNA match will show
it's yours. There was bruising on
the thighs and back.
STONE
Look, it wasn't candles and wine.
We went out to the parking lot and
got after it.
KALINDA
I spoke to some people who were at
the night club that night. None
of them saw anything that might
help your claim. No dancing,
kissing, nothing like that.
STONE
We were being discreet. I don't
know why she's doing this to me
now. You think she could have
been planning this all along?
ALICIA
Hard to say. We'll keep digging.
STONE
Mr. Crater is talking about cutting
me for violating the league's
personal conduct code. I can't
believe this. I've never been in
any trouble before.
DOORBELL RINGS. Stone goes to open the door and is met by a
WALL OF REPORTERS. Flash, people yelling questions. Crazy.
To Alicia, feels like a flashback to the first few days after
Peter's scandal broke. It takes her a moment to find her
voice.
ALICIA
We have no comment at this time.
Police move in.
DETECTIVE #1
Stone Jordan. You're under arrest
for sexual assault. You have the
right to remain silent.
19
INT. HOTEL LOBBY -- NIGHT
Peter has just finished a speech. He and Eli are on their
way to the next event, stop to chat with a few reporters.

REPORTER #2
Mr. Florick. I hear that Stone
Jordan has just been arrested for
rape. You were at the game last
night. Do you have any comment?

with Will.
20
Kalinda is already on the phone
KALINDA
The cops just made the arrest.
ALICIA
Don't worry. We'll be right behind
you. We'll see you at the station.
Don't say another word.
Stone is taken out.
21
INT. HOTEL LOBBY -- NIGHT

PETER
I don't know the details of the

22
INT. STONE'S APARTMENT W/HALLWAY -- NIGHT
22
Some reporters stay with Alicia.
REPORTER #3
Do you have a comment, counselor?
ALICIA
No.
REPORTER #3
Oh come on, give us something.
Alicia says what she's expected to say.
ALICIA
When the facts of this case come
out, my client will be exonerated.
I would hope no one rushes to
judgment.
23
INT. HOTEL LOBBY --NIGHT
PETER
It would be premature to make a
comment.
The reporters are not interested in Peter's non-committal
statement, start to move off. Peter catches Eli's eye and
they both know this may be the stage they were looking for.
23
17.
PETER (CONT'D)
I will say this. If Stone Jordan
is guilty of what he's been accused
of, he deserves to go to prison.
As State's Attorney I would
prosecute him to the fullest extent
of the law.
On Alicia and Peter setting up in opposing camps...

INT. OUTSIDE LOCKER ROOM --TEAM FACILITY -- (NEXT DAY) DAY
24
Alicia and Kalinda are waiting in the hallway. Men walk by
in various states of dress. One particularly HOT GUY is taking
his shirt off as he heads into the locker room. He smiles at
them as he goes in.
KALINDA
Maybe we should go in there.
ALICIA
They said he'd be out in a minute.
A very large, 300+pound LINESMAN moves into the locker room
wearing only a towel.
KALINDA
Yeah, we'll wait.
Dixon comes out, dressed.
DIXON
You the ones waiting for me?
ALICIA
You're Dixon Hicks?
DIXON
(a bit annoyed she
doesn't know him)
Check the posters.
ALICIA
Sorry. I'm representing Stone
Jordan. Can we talk for a minute?
Dixon doesn't even stop walking.
DIXON
I told the cops I didn't see
anything.
ALICIA
You were at the club with Stone
that night?
DIXON
We were at the same club. We
weren't together. We don't hang
like that.
KALINDA
Any particular reason?
19.
DIXON
We just don't. I can't help you.
ALICIA
You didn't see anything that went
on between him and any women?
DIXON
I was otherwise occupied.
ALICIA
If you had seen anything, would
you tell us?
DIXON
Peace, out.
He goes out the door.
ALICIA
Is he hiding something or does he
just not want to be involved?
KALINDA
Maybe both. Who can blame him?
You're not exactly gonna be bringing
in the endorsements if you're
connected to a rape trial.
ALICIA
Let's see if we can find anything
out from Bethany Tatum's friends
who were there that night.
25
INT. MICHAEL'S APARTMENT W/HALLWAY -- DAY
Alicia and Kalinda knock on door.
Poulter (late 30's) opens.
Hi,
A frumpy man, Michael
ALICIA
are you Michael Poulter?
MICHAEL
Yes.
ALICIA
We need to speak to you about a
sensitive issue.
MICHAEL
About Bethany charging Stone Jordan.
Bethany told me. You're not with
the cops. That leaves the defense.
25
20.
KALINDA
We just want to ask you a couple
of questions about the events of
that night.
MICHAEL
Sure, I'd be happy to tell you
what a piece of dirt your client
is.
26
INT. MICHAEL'S APARTMENT -- MOMENTS LATER
Kalinda hangs back, observing as Alicia questions.
ALICIA
You're the cameraman who works
with Bethany, is that correct?
MICHAEL
Yes.
ALICIA
How long have you worked with her?
MICHAEL
A little over a year.
ALICIA
We're trying to confirm the timeline
for the events the night of the
game. What time did you wrap up
your reporting at the stadium?
MICHAEL
Around eleven. We...
ALICIA
Who's we?
MICHAEL
Me, Bethany and a couple of her
girlfriends who'd come to the game.
We decided to get drinks. Bethany's
friends wanted to meet some of the
players.
ALICIA
Can you remember exactly who's
idea it was to go to that bar?
MICHAEL
Mine, I guess. I heard a couple
of the guys saying they were going
there.
ALICIA
You sure about that?
26
21.
MICHAEL
Positive.
ALICIA
Did you see any interaction between
Bethany and Stone?
MICHAEL
They talked. I don't know what it
was about. Knowing Bethany, it
was about the game. She wasn't
coming on to him if that's what
he's saying.
Michael's wife, Tracy (30's), comes in from a run.
TRACY
What's going on?
MICHAEL
Hi babe, these are Jordan's
lawyers. They wanted to ask some
questions about Bethany. Are we
done?
Kalinda sees Tracy tighten at the mention of Bethany's name.
ALICIA
Just one more thing. Bethany says
after the alleged attack, she ran
to her car and drove straight to
the hospital. Don't you think
it's strange she didn't come back
inside where her friends were?
MICHAEL
I don't know what's normal in a
moment like that. I've never been
in that position. But I believe
Bethany. She's not the sort of
person to make something like this
up. And no offense but your client
is a prick.
KALINDA
You really don't like him?
MICHAEL
He's the kind of guy who picked on
me my whole life. Thinks he should
be able to have anything or anyone
he wants. It would make my day to
see him go down for this.
ALICIA
Thanks for your time.
22.
27
EXT. MICHAEL'S APARTMENT BUILDING --(MOMENTS LATER)-- DAY
27
Kalinda and Alicia head back to their cars.
KALINDA
Got a weird vibe in there.
ALICIA
I've got to get to court for the
arraignment. See what you can find.
28
INT. COURTROOM -- COOK COUNTY COURTHOUSE --DAY
Alicia is waiting at the table going over the paperwork as
Stone is led in to take his place next to her.
STONE
No press?
ALICIA
They're outside. How was your
night?
STONE
Worse than training camp.
saying something.
That's
Cary moves in, exchanges looks with Alicia.
STONE (CONT'D)
You know him?
ALICIA
We used to work together. Look,
everything should be fine.
Shouldn't be any problems with
bail.
She glances over at Cary. She'd feel better if her opposing
counsel wasn't someone who held a grudge. Judge Yamito, a
woman in her mid fifties, moves in to start the proceedings.
JUDGE YAMITO
Counselor? Does the State have
any bail recommendations?
CARY
Your honor, the state respectfully
requests this defendant be denied
bail. He has more than ample means
to flee.
ALICIA
Your honor, the prosecution can't
seriously believe that the starting
quarterback for the Tigers would
attempt to jump bail.
28
23.
CARY
The state doesn't believe the
defendent's status as an elite
athlete should in any way impact
the pursuit of justice. We would
ask for a denial of bail for anyone
charged with this crime and the
means the defendant has. Polanski's
been gone for 30 years.
JUDGE YAMITO
Bail is set at 5 million dollars.
ALICIA
Your honor. Don't you think that's
a bit excessive?
JUDGE YAMITO
I do not. Your client has a fifty
million dollar contract. He can
afford it.
Bangs gavel. Childs who has been watching in the back, moves
out. Cary moves out without speaking to Alicia.
29
INT. CORRIDOR -- COOK COUNTY COURTHOUSE --CONTINUOUS
Cary moves up to Childs.
CHILDS
You could've pushed harder.
CARY
Jordan was going to make bail.
CHILDS
I don't want you conceding an inch.
CARY
I understand the importance of
this case.
CHILDS
Just remember, if it goes south.
I'm not the one who's gonna look
bad.
CARY
And if it goes well,
victory lap.

CARY (CONT'D)
You want to keep Peter Florick in
your tail lights and I owe Alicia.
We can both get what we want.
30
INT. WORKSTATION --LAW FIRM -- DAY
Alicia is returning to the office, runs into Diane and Will.
WILL
Everything go okay with the hearing?
ALICIA
Stone is back playing video games
as we speak.
DIANE
Who's the prosecutor?
ALICIA
Cary.
Will and Diane absorb.
DIANE
You beat him out for this job.
You'll beat him again.
CARY
I wouldn't be so sure of that.
Furious Cary up.
CARY (CONT'D)
Bethany's name is all over the
internet. Someone gave it to the
sports blogs.
DIANE
You can't seriously be accusing
us?
WILL
We wouldn't do something like that.
CARY
I think you'd do anything to tilt
the field in your favor. You need
a high profile win.
ALICIA
Come on, Cary. You know us better
than that.
CARY
You better believe I know you.

CARY (CONT'D)
You'd throw your grandmother under
a bus to win. I'm sure you intend
to come after the victim in this
case. Let me save you some time.
This isn't Duke/Lacrosse.
I'll
see you in court.
WILL
Can I give you some advice? Don't
make this personal. You do your
job and we'll do ours.

INT. PASTOR ISAIAH'S CHURCH -- DAY
Pastor Isaiah is sitting in the back listening to a soloist
when Peter joins him.
PETER
Sounds like an angel.
PASTOR ISAIAH
People say that all the time but
when I think of angels, I imagine
them to be great warriors with
swords of fire.
PETER
Sounds like you need a vacation.
PASTOR ISAIAH
Maybe. I heard what you said about
the Stone Jordan case. Did you
mean it or were you making time
with the press?
PETER
Both.
Why?
PASTOR ISAIAH
The young woman and her family
attend this church.
PETER
I see.
PASTOR ISAIAH
It's important to me, it's important
to this community that she be
treated fairly. I'd like you to
speak out on her behalf.
PETER
I don't know that I can say much
more than I have already. Why
don't you speak out for her? You
have the moral high ground.
31
26.
PASTOR ISAIAH
I will within my community but
there are people who don't want to
hear from another black preacher.
Too old school.
PETER
You know there is a chance Jordan
is innocent.
PASTOR ISAIAH
He may or may not be guilty of
rape but he's not innocent.
PETER
See, this is where I get into
trouble. I can't seem judgmental.
I'll look like a hypocrite.
PASTOR ISAIAH
I think you'll look like someone
who's seen the error of his ways.
This could be a moment for you to
take a big step toward the
redemption you say you want.
32
INT. JIM MCBRIDE'S OFFICE --TEAM FACILITY -- DAY
Jim is watching his owner's press conference ON TELEVISION as
Diane moves in. He silences her with a finger.
MR. CRATER
The Tigers organization is seriously
considering taking disciplinary
action regardless of any criminal
outcome. This organization wants
people of character. We have zero
tolerance for this kind of conduct.
Jim snaps off the TV.
DIANE
Did you guys leak Bethany Tatum's
name to the sports bloggers?
JIM
This woman wants to play hardball.
I don't see why she should be able
to hide behind anonymity.
DIANE
There are reasons the names of
alleged rape victims are kept out
of the public.
32
27.
JIM
This is not a typical accuser.
She's a public figure in her own
right.
DIANE
She's a local news reporter.
JIM
Who's side are you on?
DIANE
If it gets out that the team put
her out there, it would look very
bad.
JIM
It won't. These people know how
their bread gets buttered. They
lose access to us, they've got
nothing.
33
INT. WILL'S OFFICE -- LAW FIRM -- NIGHT
Will is on the phone with a woman when Alicia comes in.
WILL
I'll be here later than I thought.
Is ten okay?
(...)
Great. I'll see you later.
(hangs up)
ALICIA
You wanted to see me?
WILL
I hear Peter's been talking about
the Jordan case. He told the press
the cops were taking pictures and
signing autographs. Did you mention
that to him?
ALICIA
There were other people there that
night. Peter has a lot of contacts.
WILL
Do you have any idea why he's being
so vocal about this case?
ALICIA
I assume because he thinks it's
the right thing to do.
33
28.
WILL
I'm sure it has nothing to do with
African American voters.
ALICIA
If you had an answer to the
question, why did you ask me?
WILL
He's playing a dangerous game.
Exacerbating the racial politics
of this is not a good idea.
ALICIA
I don't think that's what he's
doing.
WILL
You're being naive.
ALICIA
I haven't been that in a very long
time. I don't need anyone to tell
me about Peter's shortcomings.
WILL
Could've fooled me.
of bounds.
Sorry.
Out
ALICIA
I don't understand you. I thought
you wanted to leave everything
that happened or didn't happen
with us in the past. You've clearly
moved on but you still seem
disappointed in me for staying
with Peter.
WILL
I'm not. Truthfully, I think it's
what I expected.
ALICIA
What does that mean?
WILL
Does it matter, Alicia?
ALICIA
I guess not.
34
INT. DIANE'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT
Diane is reading briefs when there's a KNOCK on the door.
It's Mcveigh, with a BAG of takeout Chinese. He moves in.
34
29.
MCVEIGH
You didn't let me tell you what's
in it for you.
DIANE
You really don't want me to come
to a gathering of a More SelfRighteous America.
MCVEIGH
A More Moral America. How can you
possibly object? Don't liberals
want a more moral America?
DIANE
Sure, we just happen to think
morality is about more than what
goes on in people's bedrooms.
MCVEIGH
Would it surprise you to know this
organization does some amazing
work to address trafficking issues
in the States?
Diane takes out CHOPSTICKS, starts to open the bag of food.
He takes it from her.
MCVEIGH (CONT'D)
Say yes first.
Diane throws the chopsticks over her shoulder.
MCVEIGH (CONT'D)
I don't know why you're so down on
conservatives. You realize of
course that conservatives give
thirty percent more to charity
than liberals. Some of us are
very nice people.
DIANE
If I go, you'll have a miserable
time.
MCVEIGH
Probably but I think it's time we
spread our wings beyond your
apartment and my house. Besides,
conservatives need liberals and
vice versa. Haven't you ever heard
that saying: "If a person is not
a liberal when they're young, they
have no heart. And if they're not
a conservative when they're old,
they have no sense."
30.
DIANE
You don't really believe that?
MCVEIGH
No, but I would like you to come
to this party with me.
She takes the food from him.
DIANE
Don't say I didn't warn you.
35
INT. GRACE'S ROOM --ALICIA'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT
Grace is skyping with Clint. She's trying to focus on their
project. He's only interested in goofing off.
GRACE
I found some books on the Persian
Gulf. I thought I could read a
couple and you could read a cou...
CLINT
What is that on your shirt?
that a care bear?
Is
GRACE
(pulls her sweater
closed)
Of course not.
CLINT
Stand up. Let me see what you're
wearing on the bottom.
GRACE
What does that have to do with
anything?
CLINT
I'm a visual learner. I can't
concentrate unless I can see the
whole scene.
Grace hesitates but stands up.
She's wearing sleep shorts.
CLINT (CONT'D)
Cute legs.
Alicia knocks, then opens without waiting for a come in.
Grace jumps guiltily.
ALICIA
I'm home. Wanna come sit with me
while I eat something?

GRACE
I can't right now.
homework.
I'm doing
ALICIA
Okay.
36
INT. ALICIA'S KITCHEN -- ALICIA'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT
Alicia is eating a sandwich at the island when Peter gets
home from a long day of campaigning.
PETER
Any of that left?
Alicia slides him half her sandwich.
PETER (CONT'D)
Kids asleep?
ALICIA
Homework.
PETER
Did you have a chance to talk to
Grace about the makeup?
ALICIA
Not yet. I'm sure it's fine.
I'll keep an eye on it. You had a
busy day.
PETER
Those cops should not have been
asking for autographs.
ALICIA
No, they shouldn't have. But I'm
not sure you getting involved in
this case is a good idea.
PETER
And why is that?
ALICIA
Okay, I'll say it. A sex scandal
is the last thing you need to be
identified with.
PETER
Rape isn't about sex. It's a
violent crime. I'm running on a
campaign of law and order and
cleaning up the State's Attorney's
office and police department. I
can't back away from this case.

deal with it.

EXT.
MICHAEL'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT
37
Kalinda is waiting for something. She sees Michael leave
then moves up to the door and goes inside.
38
INT. MICHAEL'S APARTMENT W/CORRIDOR -- MOMENTS LATER
38
Tracy is opening to Kalinda.
TRACY
Michael isn't here.
him
You just missed
KALINDA
That's okay. I was actually hoping
to speak to you. I got the feeling
earlier that you don't feel the
same way about Bethany Tatum that
your husband does.
TRACY
Michael thinks butter wouldn't
melt. He's got a thing for her.
KALINDA
That must be painful for you.
TRACY
He swears nothing has ever happened.
I guess I have no choice but to
believe him. Bethany comes across
as sweet as pie but she's as
ambitious as they come. She knows
Michael has the hots for her and
she totally works it. If you ask
me she'd do or say anything to get
ahead. Ask around.
39
INT. ALICIA'S OFFICE --LAW FIRM -- (NEXT DAY) DAY
Alicia is working in her office when Stone barges in.
tweaked, upset.
STONE
I want to file a motion or something
to get the charges dropped.
ALICIA
We have to have grounds to file a
motion for dismissal.
STONE
This has to go away now.
39
He's
33.
ALICIA
Did something happen?
STONE
My wife is threatening to leave
me.
ALICIA
Surely you can understand that
she's hurt. You need to give it
time.
Stone slams down a fist, startles Alicia.
STONE
She's been hurt? My life is being
ruined by a bunch of damn bitches.
40
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM --LAW FIRM -- (LATER)
DAY
Will, Alicia and Diane are listening to Kalinda's update.
KALINDA
I found several other people who
corroborate Tracy's story. Bethany
has apparently had affairs with a
couple of guys on the team.
WILL
Her previous sexual experience is
not admissible.
KALINDA
Word is that Bethany is super
ambitious. One co-worker says she
was fascinated by the attention
the Erin Andrews thing got. And
get this. An assistant at the
station told me Bethany kept a
list of athletes she wanted to
conquer and Stone was on that list.
The assistant told the cops about
it.
WILL
It's not in the police report.
DIANE
If they didn't inform the grand
jury of the list, it could be cause
for dismissal. They might not
have issued the warrant if they'd
known about it. It's worth a shot.
Alicia, let's file the paperwork.
40
34.
ALICIA
Sure, but just so you know, I'm
pretty certain our client is guilty.
END OF ACT ONE
35.
ACT TWO
41
INT. ALICIA'S OFFICE --LAW FIRM -- NIGHT
Alicia and Kalinda are walking out.
41
Kalinda is not convinced.
KALINDA
Just because Stone lost his temper
with you doesn't mean he's guilty.
Anyone would be upset in this
situation.
ALICIA
You're right. It's just my
instinct.
KALINDA
Everything I've heard about Bethany
says she's been more than willing
to use sex to get ahead.
ALICIA
Does that mean she deserved to be
raped?
KALINDA
You know me better than that.
ALICIA
I also know that the the first
time I worked with you, you told
me your boobs were better than
subpoenas for getting information.
Women use their assets to get ahead.
I know that. All I'm saying is
our client is not telling the truth.
42
EXT. TEAM FACILITY -- (NEXT DAY) --DAY
42
Protesters, many of them African American, many of them women
have gathered outside the team's practice facility. Some are
carrying signs that say "BETHANY IS TELLING THE TRUTH." "CUT
STONE NOW."
43
INT. ALICIA'S CAR -- DAY
43
Alicia drives through the protesters into the practice
facility.
44
INT. OFFICE --TEAM FACILITY-- DAY
Alicia is waiting for Stone in a private office. TV PLAYS
coverage of the protests in the background. He comes in.
ALICIA
I have some news.

ALICIA (CONT'D)
We may have grounds to file for
dismissal. Don't get your hopes
up. It's a long shot.
STONE
That's amazing. Thank you.
(seeing something on
the television)
Isn't that your husband?
Stone turns up the volume. On the television, Peter is
standing beside Bethany Tatum.
BETHANY
While I can not speak about the
specific details of the case, I am
standing before you because I have
no reason to hide. I haven't done
anything wrong.
45
INT. WILL'S OFFICE --LAW FIRM -- NIGHT
Will is pouring drinks for a stately looking African American
client.
WILL
What brings you by, tonight, Frank?
Our motion is still pending.
FRANK
I'm not here about my case. I'm
here about this Bethany Tatum
business.
WILL
You're one of my favorite clients
but I can't discuss that case.
FRANK
I understand. And I want you to
know I haven't come to this decision
lightly. But I'm taking my business
elsewhere.
WILL
Frank, we've been together a long
time.
FRANK
Not as long as I've been black.
Tell me you're dropping Jordan as
a client and I'll stay.
WILL
I can't do that.
45
37.
FRANK
I didn't expect you would.
WILL
Give me a chance to change your
mind.
46
INT. DIANE'S OFFICE --LAW FIRM --(HOUR LATER)-- NIGHT
46
Diane sees Frank crossing out of the office as she finishes
getting ready to go out to McVeigh's party. Will comes in.
WILL
Frank's taking his business
elsewhere.
DIANE
Why?
WILL
One guess.
DIANE
The Jordan case? Damn. Maybe
it's our cosmic punishment for
defending Jordan.
WILL
Everyone deserves a defense.
DIANE
Why does the practice of law feel
so much crummier than the theories?
WILL
I'll get back to you on that. You
look amazing by the way. Where
you going?
DIANE
More cosmic punishment. I'm having
dinner with conservatives.
47
INT. HOTEL BALLROOM -- NIGHT
Mcveigh and Diane are moving through the crowd.
MCVEIGH
You look like you're squeezing
coal between your butt cheeks.
DIANE
I have never been more in need of
a drink in my life.
47
38.
MCVEIGH
Relax. We don't do the ritual
slaughter until after dinner.
I'll get you that drink.
He moves off.
48
INT. HOTEL BALLROOM -- (MOMENTS LATER)--NIGHT
Diane is now embroiled in a conversation with several other
women.
DIANE
You can't just hold people
indefinitely.
CONSERVATIVE #1
Liberals are so predictable. They
never want to make the difficult
choices.
DIANE
I think everyone has to make
difficult choices everyday. The
only issue is if you make them
based on actual information instead
of moralistic flim flam.
CONSERVATIVE #2
Let me ask you a question, does it
at all matter to you whether this
football player is guilty or not?
DIANE
In terms of a defense, no. But
that is what this country is built
on.
CONSERVATIVE #2
What this country is built on is
people doing the right thing.
DIANE
And I suppose you have the corner
on right?
CONSERVATIVE #2
You don't have to be a genius to
know that defending a rapist is a
dumb thing to do.
Diane is about to let her have it as Mcveigh up, sees it's
not going well.
48
39.
DIANE
I hope someday you end up in a
courtroom and you get someone just
like you to decide your fate. You
self-righteous, ignorant, smallminded...
SMASH CUT TO:
49
INT. HOTEL BALLROOM -- MOMENTS LATER
49
DIANE
You have no one to blame but
yourself.
MCVEIGH
Actually, I think it's going well.
I'm thinking about putting money
down on you.
DIANE
For some reason that escapes me, I
like you. But I can't be here.
There's a reason we're better when
other people aren't around.
Diane leaves.
50
EXT. COOK COUNTY COURTHOUSE -- (NEXT DAY) --DAY
50
Diane, Alicia and Kalinda approach the criminal courts
building. As they get closer to the entrance, there are more
protesters and signs.
DIANE
Here we go.
As they move through the throng, people shout at them, stick
signs in their faces.
51
INT. COURTROOM -- COOK COUNTY COURTHOUSE -- DAY
Diane is making her case before Judge Yamito. Alicia is at
the table with Stone. Bethany is in the courtroom, along
with some of her supporters.
DIANE
Your honor, we're filing a motion
for dismissal. It has come to our
attention that the prosecution
withheld key information from the
grand jury. Information that would
in all likelihood have caused them
to refuse to issue an arrest
warrant.
51
40.
CARY
Your honor, this is a blatant
attempt to thwart justice.
JUDGE YAMITO
I'm on the edge of my seat. Let's
hear it, counselor.
DIANE
We have learned of the existence
of something Bethany Tatum called
her "To Do List". Your Honor,
its a list of athletes she intended
to sleep with. Stone Jordan is on
that list.
Bethany stands in anger.
BETHANY
That was a joke. It was just a
stupid joke with my friends.
Judge bangs the gavel.
JUDGE YAMITO
I won't allow outbursts in my court.
We will keep order. Ma'am, please
sit down. Counselor?
CARY
Your honor, there was no attempt
to hide evidence. We didn't inform
the grand jury of the list because
it's irrelevant to this case.
Just because the victim thought
the defendent was attractive doesn't
mean he had the right to assault
her. This is a pathetic attempt
by the defense to get this case
tossed or at least taint the jury
pool. It's embarrassing.
I agree.
denied.
52
JUDGE YAMITO
Motion for dismissal is
INT. WOMEN'S RESTROOM -- COOK COUNTY COURTHOUSE -- DAY
Diane is looking at herself in the mirror. Alicia is washing
her hands. Kalinda is drying her hands. They're all silent.
They end up looking at themselves in the mirror for a moment.
None of them is particularly proud of themselves. A stall
door opens and Bethany Tatum emerges. She turns to head out
the door, then changes her mind.
52
41.
BETHANY
One in three women is raped at
some point in her life. I never
thought I would be one of them.
Odds are one of you understands
exactly what happened to me. Shame
on you.
53
INT. HOTEL BAR -- NIGHT
53
Alicia and Kalinda are having a drink.
ALICIA
I hate this case. Still think
Bethany is lying?
KALINDA
Why'd she go to Stone's car with
him? That was a stupid thing to
do. Let's talk about something
else.
ALICIA
Will hates me.
KALINDA
He wants you and he can't have
you. What are you going to do if
Peter wins?
ALICIA
Why do I have to do anything?
KALINDA
If he's the state's attorney, you
guys are going to bump up against
each other. Just like this case.
ALICIA
We'll deal with it if and when it
happens. I'm not giving up my
work.
KALINDA
Doesn't a day like today make you
long for the time when your biggest
decision was which PTA committee
to serve on?
Honestly?
54
ALICIA
A teeny tiny bit.
INT. ALICIA'S KITCHEN -- ALICIA' APARTMENT-- NIGHT
Peter loosening his tie, finds a note.
54
42.
PETER
(reading)
There's leftovers in the fridge.
Peter takes them out, stares at them, then has a better idea.
He moves to Grace's door, opens the door without knocking.
Big mistake.
55
INT. GRACE'S ROOM --ALICIA'S APARTMENT -- CONTINUOUS
55
Grace is practicing kissing on one of her stuffed animals.
She flings the bear across the room. Peter, flummoxed.
PETER
Sorry.
He closes the door, then opens it, then closes it, then opens
it. Grace is mortified.
PETER (CONT'D)
So I guess we should talk.
GRACE
I was just practicing.
PETER
That's a relief. I thought you
were into something weird.
GRACE
Please stop.
PETER
No, no. It's perfectly... umm
normal to be curious about
kissing... and stuff. If you have
any questions...
GRACE
I know all about foreplay and sex
and stuff.
PETER
Okay.
(he'd pay money to
drop dead right now)
Well, good. I'm glad we had this
chat.
Follow him out.
56
Yikes.
EXT. GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY -- (NEXT DAY) DAY
Peter and Childs are both present at the ceremony for a new
hospital. As they pose for pictures...
56
43.
CHILDS
Gotta hand it to you. You're
actually managing to come across
as the voice of reason. That's
some feat.
PETER
I guess the people are ready for a
candidate who cares about what
they care about.
CHILDS
The people haven't put together
the whole story but they will.
He moves off and a REPORTER comes up to ask Peter a question.
REPORTER #2
Mr. Florick, you've been vocal in
your support of the woman accusing
Stone Jordan but your wife is on
his defense team. Don't you see
any conflict in the fact that you
are benefitting financially from
the prosecution of this case?
Childs smiles and leaves without waiting to see how Peter
manages to dig himself out.
57
INT. LIVING ROOM --ALICIA'S APARTMENT --NIGHT
Peter, having a drink, looks out the window as Alicia comes
home.
ALICIA
Hi.
PETER
I need to ask you something.
ALICIA
Okay.
PETER
I want you to drop the Jordan case.
ALICIA
What?
PETER
You're a junior associate. You're
not going to hurt your client if
you step down.
ALICIA
Thanks.
57
44.
PETER
You know what I mean.
ALICIA
I can't believe you're asking me
this.
PETER
It's hurting my credibility. I
can't be the law and order candidate
while my wife defends someone in a
high profile rape case.
Alicia lets out her frustration.
ALICIA
You're the one who decided to stamp
your name on this case. I've had
to try to explain your position to
my client and my bosses. If anyone
should back off it should be you.
How could you ask me this?
PETER
Because we're never going to find
our way back if I can't ask you
for anything.
ALICIA
I understand but the answer is no.
58
INT. WILL'S APARTMENT W/HALLWAY -- NIGHT
Will is working, watching a ball game when there's a knock on
the door. He opens to Peter.
END OF ACT TWO
58
45.
ACT THREE
59
INT. WILL'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT
59
Will showing Peter in.
PETER
Sorry for the hour.
WILL
It's no problem.
for you, Peter?
What can I do
PETER
Alicia is doing a helluva job.
WILL
She is.
PETER
Her career is important to her and
it's important to me.
WILL
Of course.
PETER
I just want to make sure you
understand that whatever cases you
assign Alicia won't have any impact
on our marriage.
WILL
Excuse me?
PETER
In case you were at all concerned.
This Jordan case could just be the
beginning. If I win the election,
Alicia and I could find ourselves
on opposite sides of many cases.
I wouldn't want that to negatively
impact your decisions about what
cases to assign her.
WILL
It won't. I don't care who Alicia
is married to. I expect all of my
staff to perform no matter what.
Does Alicia know you're here?
PETER
Alicia and I don't have secrets.
Will can think of a variety of responses but bites his tongue.
46.
60
INT. KALINDA'S CAR -- NIGHT
60
Burton (30's), Kalinda's contact in the police department,
gets into the passenger side. You could cut the sexual tension
with a knife but that knife is likely to end up in one of
their backs.
KALINDA
This had better be good.
late.
It's
BURTON
Not even a hello. Isn't it a lovely
evening?
KALINDA
Hello. I think that drunk over
there is taking a whizz on a dead
cat. How's that for pleasantries?
BURTON
Were you born pissed?
KALINDA
Why did you call me?
Probably.
BURTON
Thought you might like a heads up
about the Jordan case.
KALINDA
I'm listening.
BURTON
Word around the station is that
Dixon Hicks saw something. They're
going to make another run at him,
try to make him talk.
He gets out of the car.
By the way,
61
BURTON (CONT'D)
we're even now.
INT. LOCKER ROOM --TEAM FACILITY-- NIGHT
Kalinda barges into the locker room, all business now.
mostly deserted but Dixon is getting dressed.
DIXON
You're back.
KALINDA
I hear the cops have been leaning
on you. They think you saw
something that night.
61
It's
47.
DIXON
I told them they were mistaken.
KALINDA
See the thing is, I'm not so sure
about that.
DIXON
I'm just doing what everybody wants.
Protect the golden boy, the
franchise. Truth is, nobody really
wants the truth.
KALINDA
What's the truth, Dixon?
DIXON
Trust me, you don't want me to
say. But maybe I should and just
blow this whole thing up. That
would serve the golden boy right.
62
INT. DIANE'S OFFICE W/HALLWAY --LAW FIRM -- (NEXT DAY) DAY
Diane, Will, Kalinda and Alicia.
DIANE
Did you get the feeling Dixon was
ready to talk?
KALINDA
Maybe. He all but told me he saw
Stone attacking Bethany.
ALICIA
Why hasn't he spoken up?
KALINDA
Man code. Doesn't want to be
involved. Likes holding the cards.
Take your pick.
WILL
I don't think he's keeping quiet
out of loyalty to Stone. They
don't like each other. Had a big
blow up in a game a couple of months
ago.
DIANE
You think he'd testify against
Stone out of spite?
WILL
It's possible.
62
48.
ALICIA
Or maybe Dixon's conscience has
finally gotten the better of him.
I think we should see if Cary would
be willing to deal before Dixon
comes forward. Maybe he'll be
satisfied with a lesser charge.
DIANE
You've got to run that by Stone
first. See what he says. I've
got a meeting.
FOLLOW Will and Alicia out into the HALLWAY.
WILL
You want me to go with you?
ALICIA
No, I can handle it.
(hesitates, then)
I have a confession to make.
WILL
Sounds ominous.
ALICIA
Part of me isn't going to be all
broken up if Dixon comes forward.
WILL
You protect your client no matter
how you feel.
ALICIA
I know that. I'm allowed to
secretly root for justice, right?
WILL
I always root for justice but
sometimes that means people get
away with things.
ALICIA
Why is there sometimes a difference
between a good thing and the right
thing?
WILL
I have no idea.

INT. STONE'S APARTMENT -- DAY
Alicia is standing in the doorway, face to face with Stone's
wife, PAMELA (early 30's). She is red-eyed, obviously upset
and angry.
63
49.
ALICIA
Hi, I'm Stone's attorney, Alicia
Florick.
PAMELA
I know who you are. I'm the wife.
Come in. Everyone else is here.
She turns away and lets Alicia into the apartment. Stone is
surrounded by three of his entourage. Pamela clearly dislikes
this group.
STONE
Hey Alicia, these are my boys.
I've known all these guys since
high school.
ALICIA
Nice to meet all of you but Stone,
I think we should talk alone.
RAY
We've got his back. You can beat
this thing, man. Everybody in
this town loves you. You're Stone
Jordan. That 'ho is a nobody.
Pamela can't take it anymore.
PAMELA
Would you shut up? Just shut up.
You're not helping.
RAY
Pammy, everybody understands this
is hard for you.
PAMELA
Thanks, Ray. I feel so much better
knowing you understand. You were
probably right there rooting him
on. Go on, Stone. Go get some.
Go hit that. You think I don't
know.
ALICIA
Okay. Let's everybody settle down.
Stone, I think it would be best if
your friends left.
They would protest but Stone cuts them off.
STONE
Fine. I'll catch up with you guys
later.
They go.
50.
ALICIA
We need to talk about something
that's come up. We're hearing
some rumblings that Dixon may have
seen something that night.
Something that could damage our
case.
STONE
There was nothing to see.
ALICIA
Still, we might need to think about
making a deal.
STONE
What you mean say I'm guilty?
ALICIA
There's a chance we might be able
to plead to a lesser charge, not
rape. Maybe public indecency.
You'd probably get six months jail
time, a fine, some community
service.
Six months?
STONE
No way.
ALICIA
It's better than fifteen years
which is a very real possibility.
And you can avoid having it all
aired in open court.
PAMELA
You think a jury will convict?
ALICIA
It's possible. You have to decide
if you're willing to take that
chance.
STONE
I haven't done anything wrong.
PAMELA
That's your problem, Stone.
honestly believe that.
You
STONE
If you were me, would you try to
make a deal?
ALICIA
I would.
51.
ALICIA (CONT'D)
Six months is not that long. Others
have done more jail time than that
and managed to get their careers
back. If you're convicted of rape,
it's over.
64
INT. CARY'S OFFICE -- DAY
64
Cary is working when a pleased Childs moves in.
CHILDS
Any progress on getting Dixon to
crack?
CARY
Not yet but I know he saw something.
The cops are working on it.
CHILDS
You get him to testify and this
case is nailed down.
CARY
What if Lockhart, Gardner is willing
to deal? What's the minimum we'll
take?
CHILDS
We're not taking a deal.
this to go to trial.
I want
CARY
They're going to offer something.
We can maybe get jail time.
CHILDS
I want a trial.
CARY
Juries are unpredictable. Isn't
the point to get this guy behind
bars?
Before Childs can answer, Alicia moves into the doorway.
CHILDS
If it's not my favorite Florick.
Tell Peter he should have the
cameras photograph him from the
left. From the right, his chin
looks weak.
ALICIA
I think Peter is more concerned
with the issues than how he looks
but I'll pass that along.
52.
Childs leaves.
ALICIA (CONT'D)
You know why I'm here.
CARY
I do.
ALICIA
Public Indecency. Six months.
CARY
Are you high? That's a misdemeanor.
ALICIA
He's admitting to wrongdoing.
No thanks.
our case.
CARY
We're still building
ALICIA
Spare Bethany the spectacle of a
trial, spare the tax payers the
expense.
CARY
The taxpayers love a scandalous
trial. We're talking weeks of
entertainment.
ALICIA
Come on, Cary. Forget that it's
me asking and do the right thing.
CARY
We're going to trial.
65
INT. LIVING ROOM -- ALICIA'S APARTMENT -- NIGHT
Peter and Pastor Isaiah.
PASTOR ISAIAH
Bethany's parents asked me to say
thank you.
PETER
That's not necessary.
How is she?
PASTOR ISAIAH
I've counseled a lot of women who
have been traumatized. It's a
long road.
PETER
I hope getting justice will help.
65
53.
PASTOR ISAIAH
You've stepped up big here.
been noticed.
It's
PETER
It was the right thing to do.
Thank you for asking me to do it.
If you don't help your friends
what good are you.
The meaning is not lost on Pastor Isaiah.
will expect something. Alicia moves in.
He knows Peter
PASTOR ISAIAH
Evening, Mrs. Florick. I was
just on my way out. Have a good
night.
Pastor Isaiah leaves.
ALICIA
I never know what to say to him.
PETER
A lot of people feel that way around
clergy. You hungry?
ALICIA
Starving.
PETER
I can make you one of my special
omelets. Consider it a peace
offering. I don't want this case
to come between us.
Me either.
good.
66
ALICIA
Sure, an omelet sounds
INT. CARY'S OFFICE W/HALLWAY -- NIGHT
66
Cary is moving down the hallway, on his way home when he comes
across Bethany sitting on a bench in the hall.
CARY
Bethany, what are you doing here?
BETHANY
I was sitting here trying to decide
if I should ask you to drop this
whole thing.
CARY
We have a decent case. If Dixon
talks we'll have an even better
one.
54.
BETHANY
Half the people are acting like
I'm the world's biggest victim and
the other half think I'm the world's
biggest slut.
CARY
I can't imagine how difficult this
must be.
BETHANY
I'd like you to be honest with me.
What are our chances?
CARY
We have a strong case.
The evidence
BETHANY
(interrupting)
For real.
CARY
Without Dixon or some other witness,
about 50/50. Those are decent
odds. Hey, I'm still confident
Dixon will step up.
BETHANY
Ok. I just wish I could go back
to the me I was before I got
demolished.
Bethany goes.
67
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM --LAW FIRM -- (FEW DAYS LATER) DAY
Diane, Will, Kalinda and Alicia are strategizing.
KALINDA
I haven't found any dirt on Dixon.
Nothing to discredit him, if he
comes forward.
WILL
Stone's teammate turning on him is
going to be a disaster Are you
sure Cary won't deal?
ALICIA
I can try again but it was an
emphatic no.
DIANE
Childs isn't going to give up an
arena like this.
Cary moves in.
67
55.
CARY
No champagne?
What?
WILL
What are you talking about?
Cary turns on the television. Mr. Crater is at a press
conference with his arm around a beaming Dixon.
CARY
Dixon Hicks just signed a new deal
worth 40 mil. Guess that clears
up any questions about what he saw
that night.
ALICIA
Are you moving forward with the
case?
CARY
Bethany doesn't want to. She's
had enough. She just wants to
drop the whole thing. I can't
blame her.
If she won't testify,
we can't go forward without her.
ALICIA
You can't let her do that.
is wrong.
This
WILL
Alicia!
CARY
The whole thing gets swept under
the rug. Oh sorry, he might get
suspended for a couple of games.
WILL
Then it's done.
CARY
Maybe I didn't have all the best
motives but this stinks to high
heaven and you know it.
Cary leaves.
68
INT. ALICIA'S APARTMENT -- DAY
Grace is showing the running back around.
CLINT
Let me see your room.
GRACE
It's not all that exciting.
68
56.
CLINT
I want to see it anyway. Maybe
I'll get some clues about what
makes Grace tick.
GRACE
It's over there.
69
INT. GRACE'S ROOM -- ALICIA'S APARTMENT -- CONTINUOUS
She opens the door for him. As he looks around, Grace feels
a little exposed but kind of excited.
CLINT
It's small.
GRACE
It's okay.
CLINT
(lying back on her
bed)
So, Grace. Have you ever been
kissed?
GRACE
Of course. If we're going to work
on the report...
CLINT
Show me.
GRACE
Show you what?
CLINT
Show me if you can kiss.
GRACE
My parents are going to be home
any minute.
CLINT
No one's here now.
Grace leans closer and puts her lips on his. The kiss only
lasts for a few seconds. Grace is clearly awkward.
CLINT (CONT'D)
Let's get out of here.
GRACE
What about the report?
CLINT
Screw it. Let's have some fun.
know a place we can go.
I
69
57.
GRACE
I don't know. It's getting late.
It's going to be dark soon.
CLINT
You scared of the dark or something?
GRACE
No.
CLINT
Then come with me.
As they move out...
END OF ACT THREE

ACT FOUR
70
INT. STONE'S APARTMENT W/HALLWAY -- DAY
70
Alicia is giving Stone and Pamela the news.
STONE
It's over?
ALICIA
It's over. There may be a civil
case. We'll have to wait and see.
Stone gives Pamela a hug. She's stiff, silent. Stone tries
to give Alicia a hug but she sticks out her hand to him.
ALICIA (CONT'D)
Good luck to you.
She starts out but then she turns back to him. She wants to
tell him he got lucky and he should change his life but she
doesn't. She just leaves.
71
INT. ALICIA'S CAR -- DAY
71
Alicia sits alone in her Mercedes. She turns on the radio,
flips the dial to sports talk radio.
RADIO PERSONALITY (V.O.)
This is KSPT. Sports radio for
the greater Chicago area. We're
taking your calls. David, what's
on your mind?
CALLER #1 (V.O.)
I say justice was served. It was
obvious what kind of woman this
Bethany chick was. I mean, come
on. We all know why she was there
that night.
RADIO PERSONALITY
Chris in Wrigleyville.
(V.O.)
CALLER #2 (V.O.)
All I know is we've got a chance
to go deep in the playoffs! And
I'm telling you no decent woman
would be hanging out in a bar that
time of night...
Alicia clicks it off.
72
INT. CARY'S OFFICE W/HALLWAY-- NIGHT
Cary is locking his office and heading out at the end of a
very long day when Childs approaches.
72
59.
CHILDS
This wasn't the outcome I had in
mind.
CARY
You win some...
CHILDS
If I lose this election, I won't
be the only one out of a job. You
think Florick is going to think
twice about showing your ass the
door? Enjoy your evening.
73
INT. ALICIA'S APARTMENT -- LIVING ROOM --NIGHT
Eli and Peter are having a drink, waiting for the results of
the latest poll.
ELI
This was a big gamble.
Big risk.
PETER
Big reward.
ELI
It may have bought you African
American votes but it could cost
you others. Now that the charges
have been dropped, people are
wondering if she was really telling
the truth.
PETER
People can believe what they want.
Speaking up for her was the right
thing to do.
ELI
Nobody here but us chickens. You
didn't do this because it was the
right thing. You did it to make
up ground with the African American
community.
PETER
You have a truly devious mind.
ELI
Takes one to know one.
Eli gets a call on his cell, answers.
ELI (CONT'D)
Speak.
(listens for a moment)
Keep me posted.
73
60.
ELI (CONT'D)
(he hangs up)
You slipped a little with white
males. But you gained nine points
with African Americans. Many of
them cited your stalwart support
for Bethany. They think Childs
dropping the charges is just another
case of "The Man" looking out for
his own.
PETER
Do I know this city or what?
74
EXT. STREET -- NIGHT
74
Kalinda is standing by her car waiting. She sees Bethany,
wearing a scarf and hat pulled low, moving down the street
towards her apartment. She approaches her.
BETHANY
What do you want?
KALINDA
I just wanted to tell you. I
believe you. If you call me in any
kind of civil case, I'll deny this
conversation.
BETHANY
Thank you.
KALINDA
Take it easy.
Kalinda leaves and Bethany watches her go.
75
INT. DIANE'S APARTMENT W/HALLWAY -- NIGHT
Diane has just opened to McVeigh.
MCVEIGH
You don't look like someone who
just won a big case.
DIANE
The charges were dropped.
win.
MCVEIGH
That's even better right?
Yep.
DIANE
It's great.
MCVEIGH
You think he was guilty.
We didn't
75
61.
DIANE
I know what you're thinking. You
who won't testify for a defendent
you believe to be guilty. Well, I
don't have that luxury. The law
doesn't work that way and I believe
in the law.
MCVEIGH
I didn't say anything. Your work
is your deal. Could I do it? No.
Do I think it has to be done?
Absolutely.
DIANE
Sometimes it stinks.
MCVEIGH
Just when I think you're all angles
and geometry, you throw me a curve.
Something is on Diane's mind.
DIANE
When I was freshman in college, I
was hanging out with a group of
kids in a dorm room. I fell asleep.
I woke up when I felt someone
getting into the bed with me.
Everyone else was gone. There was
just one guy. I thought he was my
friend. The whole time he kept
apologizing, saying it was okay.
MCVEIGH
Did you report him?
DIANE
Damn straight I did.
resident advisor.
I told the
MCVEIGH
Did he go to jail?
DIANE
It went before a university
disciplinary committee. They
convinced me not to press charges.
Said there wasn't enough evidence.
They did kick him out of school.
MCVEIGH
I personally believe in castration.
DIANE
I was furious. I transferred,
changed my major to pre-law.
62.
MCVEIGH
I knew you were strong.
idea.

I had no
INT. ALICIA'S OFFICE -- NIGHT
Will is on his way out when he sees Alicia is still there.
WILL
I don't know if you heard but the
case is over. You can go home.
ALICIA
Thanks. I've just got some things
to wrap up.
WILL
Don't stay too late.
Awkward moment. Will would usually plop down in her office
but things are different now.
WILL (CONT'D)
Good night.
ALICIA
Good night. Hey, can I just say
that I miss you?
WILL
I miss you, too.
ALICIA
Is it always going to be this weird?
WILL
Probably. We're both extremely
repressed and awkward and bad at
interpersonal communication.
He always could make her laugh.
ALICIA
Speak for yourself.
(laughter fades)
I didn't handle all of this as
well as I could have. I'm sorry
for that.
WILL
I'm not sure there was a way to
handle this well.
ALICIA
It's always been so easy to talk
to you. That must mean we're doing
something right.
76
63.
WILL
Or we're gluttons for punishment.
ALICIA
Or we just aren't willing to let
each other go.
WILL
Why is that?
ALICIA
I can't let myself think about
that.
WILL
What would change if you did?
It's a charged moment and they seem once again on the verge
of something. Alicia's cell rings. She answers.
SMASH CUT TO:
77
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM W/HALLWAY -- NIGHT
Alicia is running down the hall.
Will follows.
ALICIA
I'm looking for Grace Florick.
Nurse points to a cubicle. Alicia rushes in. Grace is in
the bed. She's been roughed up, has a bruise on her face.
Peter is sitting beside her. Grace sees her mom and melts
into her arms. Alicia holds her close, kisses her head.
ALICIA (CONT'D)
Are you okay?
Grace holds her tighter.
ALICIA (CONT'D)
What happened?
Grace is silent.
PETER
I'm not sure. She came home like
this. She wouldn't say anything.
I brought her right here. I thought
she was studying with Clint.
ALICIA
Did he do this to you?
Grace is silent.
ALICIA (CONT'D)
We need to call the police.
77
64.
No.
GRACE
I just want to go home.
PETER
If this kid hurt you, then his ass
is going to jail unless I get my
hands on him first.
GRACE
Daddy, I just want to go home and
forget the whole thing.
ALICIA
Grace, did Clint hit you...did he
do anything else to you?
GRACE
He tried but I fought him, that's
why he hit me. But nothing happened
okay, nothing happened.
Alicia and Peter aren't sure if they believe her. She buries
her face in Alicia's chest and Alicia holds onto her for dear
life. Peter wraps his arms around both of them. Will watches
through the window, knows in this moment he doesn't belong
here. The ties that bind... He leaves the family alone.
