World Champion Glass Ski // Project
Quando la storia dello sport incontra l’arte.
GIOARA
GLASS. Is the professional link between Giorgio and Chiara,
they have been starting almost as for fun to challenge this
noble material, shaping and turning it into a scale model of
the first wooden Ski of the Olympic Champion Piero Gros to
celebrate in a unique and original way his 40 years from the
victory of the World Cup.
REVOLUTIONARY. Chiara and Giorgio have a desire: to leave
a mark which will speak of them, thanks to the originality
of the project World Champions Ski Glass. The creativeproductive concept of Giorgio and Chiara perfectly matches
the international designer’s signs who interpret the object-ski
through Art Design graphic textures.
DESIGN. GIOARA is also a Design Editor and the Art Director
Paola Colombari made it possible through the involvement of
four internationally famous Designers, Karim Rashid, Rodrigo
Almeida, Sergio J. Matos and Antonio Cagianelli, together with
Alberto Caramello who created the Ski Lamp texture dedicated
to Piero Gros, the World Cup Olympic Champion testimonial.

“I am an enthusiast who likes beauty in
things. The glass transparency shows
up my most emotional and creative
side. I want to amaze and create a
dialog through our products. My will
of daring always has distinguished
my professional life, the desire of new
challenges has been the drive to send
me into the world that GIOARA will
feature with its creations”.
“I am a lover of glass and I am curious
by nature. I share my passion and my
living space where I work because I
want that my atelier, which I created and
where I grew up, becomes the cradle for
GIOARA. I like living my projects along the
way until accomplishment, challenging
the material and the expectations,
building up new horizons, developing
myself and enjoying this great
adventure together with people who are
supporting me with their knowledge and
their emotions.

Born in Sauze d’Oulx (Occitan town in
the province of Turin), he is a former
alpine skier, one of the protagonists of
the famous “Valanga Azzurra”, who won
in 1974 the World Cup and the Gold
medal in the slalom at the XII Olympic
Winter Games in 1976 at Innsbruck.
He started his career in the World Cup
in 1972, winning the first two races
in which he participated and became
the youngest winner of a race of FIS
Alpine Ski World Cup men’s when I
was only eighteen. His first victory in
the World Cup was in the giant slalom
in Val d’Isere in 1972, 8th December,
starting with bib Number 45, a feat
never managed to anyone else. He went
up for the last time on the podium in
Cup, in combined, January 15, 1979 in
Crans-Montana; he took part in the XIII
Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid in
1980 and the World Championships in
Schladming in 1982, retired in 1982,
even if he was only twenty-eight. After
retiring he followed skiing as television
sports commentator.
“In 2014 I celebrated 40 years after winning the World Cup Alpine Ski. For this
occasion I received a special gift almost as a joke: a pair of glass skis which my
son Giorgio commissioned to an artist who reproduced my first wooden ski I used
when I was a child. The idea struck me for its originality meanwhile brought me in
the memories of childhood. I believe that the Sport, and in particular the Ski, can
become a new starting point for design projects that will be developed in the context
of international Contemporary Design tendency. I am happy that Paola Colombari, a
friend of mine and a former athlete of the national ski team, is the Art Director of this
Collection which, I am more than sure, will give continuity to the link between “Sport
and Design” with new and interesting future projects” PIERO GROS.
The Ski Lamp dedicated to the Olympic Testimonial has been designed by Alberto
Caramello: “I thought that the five rings were the most immediate signs and I liked
the idea of de-structure them through a series of arches, like the marks left on the
snow by ski.

Pirarucu: The giant of the Amazonian waters.
The graphics repeats the pattern of curvy dash. Displays brown tone - illuminated
by the contrast of the contours in red - and extends throughout the base of the ski
Pirarucu boards. The Inspiration catched for the designer Sergio Matos refers to
Pirarucu, the biggest fish that inhabits the fresh waters of Brazil.
Buriti: The tree of life.
Scarlet red spreads in three-dimensional design of the ski Buriti boards. It has
the tone inspired by the tropics, the fruit of buriti, one of the biggest palms of the
Amazon - Brazil. The rivers, flooded forests and streams are the perfect place for this
kind of palm that reaches up to 35 meters high and is called by the natives Tapuia
the “tree of life”.

I was born in Sao Paulo, the largest city
in Brazil, where people from all over the
world live and form an enormous cultural
and sub-cultural network. In this scenario,
we can find the Indian culture, the African
culture, the Portuguese and Hispanic
cultures and influences from other parts of
Asia and Europe. I believe we are a young
culture and in the mood for inventions.
Also, I think that in Brazil we do not
have a good industrial or post-industrial
decorative culture; what one can find is
innumerous aspects that come directly
from craftsmanship which very often does
not show the point of view of the formal
realization of the object.
I think it is necessary to look and feel the
spirit of these objects and the aesthetic
atmosphere that surrounds them.
A rope with knots, poetic representation of how we are connected with
other people, with the sport, with the object.
The rope that holds us back, while life passes in speed. In Greek mythology, the
Parcas were the three sisters who decided the fate of the Gods is that of human
beings. The three women were responsible for the production, the weaving and the
shaping of the human lives. Nodes are like different roads and new paths which
continuously prove our capabilities. Life is movement and sport is one of the most
beautiful forms of representation of our existence.

Phaeton.
The concept of “challenge”, typical of sports performance, is the basis of the
concept “Phaeton” Ski, in which the myth of Phaeton who takes possession of the
chariot of the Sun God, and then loses control setting fire to heaven and earth
and precipitating with hair on fire on the Earth, it is a symbol of failure and futility
of actions and human ambitions. The beauty myth that refers Cagianelli which
results in ‘unpublished graphic pattern in which the sky and fire come together, is a
counterpoint to the pessimism about the fate of’ man which is the basic concept of
the Cagianelli’s metaphoriacal creations.
Fire walk with me.
The concept of “Power and Energy” key ingredient for any sport performance is the basis
of the flaming Lamp-Ski. The theme of the flame is a symbol of the creative landscape
of polymorphic Cagianelli, archaic symbol of energy and creative force as well as in the
eponymous film of Lynch, a metaphor of destruction and annihilation. And the theme of
the ambiguity of the opposing, positive and negative intertwine and merge.
