8 Sunday, August 31, 2014 Community Heroes THE DAILY CITIZEN Dedicated Whitworth part of winning team in the community BY TANNER BLACKTON [email protected] CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Lynn Whitworth is dedicated to many causes in the community, and she is involved heavily with United Way of Northwest Georgia. Family, faith, friends and her community. These are the things Lynn Whitworth credits for her being the avid volunteer, leader and mentor that she is. As the co-owner of Brown Industries since 1994, Whitworth knows what it means to be a leader. Her leadership skills have not only aided her company, but also those involved in local volunteerism. Since the early 1990s, Whitworth has worked on numerous committees and projects with the Friendship House, which offers preschool education and child care for 100 children between 6 weeks to 5 years. In 1992, she was a part of the original “Make Room for More” committee, which raised money for the building that the Friendship House currently uses. She served as board chair in 1994, was the Derby Day fundraiser chair multiple times and has participated throughout the years with the annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Whitworth also played a part in helping raise $100,000 for the Friendship House’s Challenge Grant through the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia last year. Most recently, she donated and decorated a tree for the Festival of Trees, a Creative Arts Guild partnership. “Lynn has truly been a friend of the Friendship House for many, many years,” said Mary Thelma Norris, Friendship House director. “When we call, she answers. She is always honest and supportive of us.” “She is incredible,” continued Norris. “She does what she says she’s going to do, and more.” Additionally, Whitworth is involved heavily with United Way of Northwest Georgia, where she is a board member, as well as co-chair and a founding member of the Women’s Leadership Council. Whitworth is dedicated to all of her causes, and maintains that United Way is a wonderful vehicle for many of them. “Our United Way has a very focused approach to advocacy, volunteering and giving,” said Whitworth. “They stay attuned to our ever-changing community needs and are great stewards of the resources that are entrusted to them.” The United Way is happy to have Whitworth as a volunteer. “Lynn provides extraordinary leadership as a United Way board member,” said Amanda Burt, president of United Way. “As co-chair and founding member of United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council, Lynn embodies the spirit of United Way’s call to action: ‘Give, Advocate, Volunteer — Live United.’” Lynn and Keith Whitworth are currently among more than 75 members of the Tocqueville Society who contribute $800,000 of the annual United Way of Northwest Georgia campaign. Whitworth has also volunteered with the Little Free Libraries project, a United Way literacy initiative, and helped to organize books for the Whitfield County-Dalton Day Care Center library. Whitworth serves with the Family Support Council, another United Way community partner. She at one time served as president of the board of directors, and has continued to be a big part of many projects there since. “When working on a project with her, I am always stuck by her dedication to the projects she undertakes and the amount of effort that she is willing to expend to make sure that the outcome is as it should be,” said Holly Rice, executive director of the Family Support Council. “She is never complacent about the causes that she supports,” Rice continued. “If you have Lynn Whitworth on your team you can be sure that you are on a winning team. There are many children in this community who will never know how much their lives have been improved by the quiet tenacity with which she moves forward in an earnest attempt to make a difference. Lynn is truly a phenomenal woman.” Whitworth is happy to give back to a community that has given her so much. “Dalton is a caring, unique, and very special place,” said Whitworth. “It has blessed my life beyond measure.” “As a member of the United Way board, a volunteer, and a donor, I see yearly how community volunteers assess our community’s most urgent needs and set those priorities for action,” she continued. “By being part of United Way, I am joining forces with so many, and together we are making a difference in our community by attacking its most urgent needs.” RossWoods Adult Day Services celebrates all our volunteers who have made a commitment to serve our participants unselfishly, with compassion and patience.
