Developments under the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process NADEG, 6th meeting, 3-4 May 2017 François Kremer, European Commission, Nature Unit Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process Refocussing the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process, an action under the new Nature Action Plan …to make it better contribe to the establishment of coherent, effective and efficient conservation systems for the network throughout the EU. Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process Some suggested action… actively promote engagement by national and regional authorities and by stakeholders in the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process, use the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process to disseminate and promote Commission guidance, use the Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process to promote and contribute to implementation of Species and Habitats Action Plans. Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process Some deliverables of a refocussed process improved coherence in evaluating conservation status of protected habitats and species and setting conservation objectives and priorities identification of best practices in conservation management strengthened cooperation and sharing of experience on common challenges and opportunities biogeographical-level roadmaps for cooperative action Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process Thematic working groups under the recent/up-coming seminars: 2nd Boreal Seminar, 5-7 October 2016 1. Integrated management approaches to Natura 2000 2. Approaches to setting restoration priorities 3. Communication and stakeholder engagement 4. Setting conservation priorities 2nd Atlantic Seminar, 25-27 October 2016 1. Integrated management approaches to Natura 2000 2. Adaptive approaches to agriculture and nature conservation 3. Conservation measures and their effectiveness 3. Monitoring and evaluation 4. Addressing threats & pressures to Alpine habitats and species Natura 2000 Biogeographical Process Some points for discussion What practical ways could be found to improve coherence in evaluating conservation status and setting conservation objectives and priorities at biogeographical level? What are the best tools to rely on to share experience on common challenges and best practice? How can we increase stakeholders and local/regional authorities' involvement in the biogeographical process?
