if you want to enter more than 1 team)
Format
The format will be the same as the NZSS Ki-o-Rahi Championships. This is a
qualifying tournament and the top 2 teams will go on the the NZSS. Please indicate
on entry form if you wish to qualify or not.
Teams
Mixed teams only
Maximum of 14 people in a team – Mixed Teams 7 males and 7 females
8 a side on the field with 4 Males and 4 Females at all times.
No rolling subs – Subs to be made during quarter and halftime breaks.
Rules
Same as for NZSS – see below.
Games
Umpires
Games will consist of 4x6 minute quarters (24 minutes total)
Draw
A draw will be emailed to schools before the competition by the RSD
Food/drink
The school canteen will be open, as with Golden Bay High School students, the shop
across the road is out of bound. There is water available, please bring bottles.
Each school is to provide 1 umpire for the day and extra helpers for score taking etc
would be appreciated, the event is essentially being run by schools for schools.
NZSS Tournament

The New Zealand Secondary Schools Ki o Rahi Tournament is being held 19 –
20 April 2017 in Auckland, venue to be confirmed. The top 2 teams from TSS
championships must contact Jeni Thornborough to find out who the contact
controller is for the NZSS event, entry fee will be required for the NZSS
tournament.

RULES – same as for Nationals
KI OMA
A max of 2 players (Ki Oma) guarding the Tupu. (Players guarding the Tupu are not
allowed to touch the Tupu with their hands or any body parts). One warning, next time tupu
touched - 1 point penalty to Taniwha.
Ki Oma kick from Te Marama to Te Pāwero (restarts)
The Kī must touch the pou to count towards points scored
Ki Oma player jumps in the air from Te Ao over Pawero while in possession of the Kī
before running through “Te Roto” in attempt to scoring in Pāwero
Recount of Pou – Taniwha are in FULL POSSESSION of the Kī or the Kī touches the
tupu
No deliberate running into a defending player who is standing their ground
Ki Oma can attempt to lean in and reach for the Kī, if it is loose, from either the Te Roto
and Pāwero zones as long as both of their feet are still within the Te Ao or if Kaitiaki in the
Pāwero zone.
Kaitiaki of the tupu can hold the ball for a maximum of 5 seconds in the Pāwero. If they
have not passed the Ki out within that time it is a handover.
TANIWHA
Taniwha can hit the “Tupu” as many times as they can.
Number of Taniwha players in “Te Roto” will be 5 when on defense and when shooting at
the tupu
Taniwha can attempt to block a restart kickoff by lifting players on either side of Te Ara in
the Te Roto zone as long as no taniwha player is or lands in the Te Ara zone.
Lifting and jump shots allowed as long as the Kī has left the hand before the player’s feet
touch the ground in P. Player must exit Pāwero immediately
Taniwha are not allowed to cross Te Ara during play, they must run around.
Taniwha can attempt to lean in and get the Kī, if it is loose, from either the Pāwero or Te
Ara zones as long as both of their feet are still within the Te Roto zone.
GENERAL PLAY
No early or late ripping of tags
If 1 tag is ripped and the player gets their second flag ripped before the 3 second pass
rule then it is a handover.

Out of play when you don’t have both tags on properly
Double rip handover
Ripping tag of a player who is in a safe zone is not allowed(Pawero/Te Roto) for example
Off-side player gaining possession in an illegal zone
When handover called, put ball straight down on ground where you were ripped
No fending, No holding, No pushing, No shoulder charging, No obstructing
If any of the last 5 offences are committed and then repeated, the player will be warned,
if it continues they will be asked to leave the field for a period of time which is up to the
referee (1 minute usually) .
No running the kī from Pāwero to Te Ao through Te Ara or vice versa

Feet can be used to kick the kī at the Tupu or team players
Play Te Paparoa as outer boundary. Throw in by opposing team near the point of
boundary exit. Fields will be roped off.
Tewhatewha (player referee) from each team is required. This is the only person that
communicates with the umpire.
POINTS
1 point each time for hitting the tupu.
Maximum of 7 points for Ki Oma
Minimum of 1 point is allowed (E.g. If you hit 3 Pou that = 3 points once scored in the
‘Pawero’)
(Ki-Oma MUST touch at least 1 ‘pou’ to score in Pawero)
If a game becomes a draw at the end of normal time then it is first point scored that wins
the game.
HANDOVERS
When a player is off side and has POSSESSION of the kī.
When a double rip has occurred (Both rippers are ripped at one time and player has not
passed the kī within 3seconds of one ripper being ripped) Once you have been ripped you
have 3 seconds to pass the kī. (Players are not allowed to walk with the kī after being
touched)
Ki Oma players running into Te Roto and getting a tag ripped.
Ki Oma player runs in and then back out of Te Roto or runs in and passes it back out.
KAITIAKI
Kaitiaki can rip taniwha, and then taniwha must pass
Can Enter and Exit through Te Ara
Up to two players defending the tupu
Kaitiaki must not run IN and OUT of Pāwero with the kī
GAME TIME
Each game will be 24 minutes which is played in 4 quarters with each quarter going for 6
minutes.
Taniwha will have 5 seconds to shoot at the Tupu, otherwise a handover will occur
Kaitiaki of the Tupu will have 5 seconds to pass to their team mates in Te Ao when
gaining possession of the Kī
3 second pass when tag has been ripped
In addition:
Kaitiaki touching Tupu – If Kaitiaki touch Tupu, warning will be given, if Kaitiaki knock or
move the Tupu, point (s) will be awarded to Taniwha and play at ref’s discretion
Kicking allowed throughout the game
Rebounds are allowed – If a double touch occurs due to a rebound of the kī from the
Tupu and Kaitiaki, points will be awarded to Taniwha at each touch of the Tupu by the kī and
play at ref’s discretion
Will play an ‘Advantage’ rule – Eg. Referee will choose to allow play to continue if an
offense has been made against the team in possession of the kī therefore enforce the
‘advantage’ rule. He/She will make the call if the attacking team is unnecessarily penalized if
play were to be stopped. (The rule is supposed to improve flow of the game and benefit
attacking teams who have had an offense committed against them but in their best interest
to ‘play on’.)

In the result of a draw – the first point scored must be circled by scorers. If it is
a draw the team that scored the first point wins the game.
All players are expected to wear sports footwear as most competitors will have
training shoes with sprigs.
