Lower wear, higher output 36D Double-Venting Extruders New-generation 36D extruders improve the economics of PVC pipe extrusion Krauss-Maffei's new double venting extruders offer 6 major benefits that can boost profit margins in pipe extrusion: Atmospheric venting – 17 % higher output compared with 26D machines Vacuum degassing – Effective and reliable degassing even of highly filled materials – Cost savings from extended service life for the processing unit, higher output and less load on the gear system – Wide processing window for different formulations 36D processing unit – Lower compression ratio than 26D extruders in the high compression phase – Less wear on screws and barrel 36D twin-screw extruder with double venting Double venting – the new processing technology Our new 36D extruders are not simply machines with the processing unit extended from 26D to 36D. On the contrary, our 36D machines represent a new departure in PVC processing. The standard design for conventional counter-rotating, closely intermeshing twin-screw extruders has one venting zone. The new 36D extruders have two venting zones. The new design has some convincing benefits. Less wear, lower costs Especially in pipe extrusion, a lower compression ratio sharply reduces wear on screws and barrel, most noticeably in processing highly filled material. You'll see a positive effect on your cost calculations. Krauss-Maffei's 36D double-venting design offers all the benefits that go with highly effective degassing and lowest possible wear. Modular options ■ ■ Problem: Trapped air In conventional extruders, a considerable volume of air is drawn into the feed zone along with the dryblend. This air acts as an insulator, preventing the optimal amount of heat reaching the PVC from the screw and barrel. An additional problem with highly filled formulations is the risk of turbulence when the air is subsequently extracted in the venting zone. Solution: Two venting zones With our new 36D extruders, the compressed and prewarmed dryblend reaches the first venting zone at 15D. Here atmospheric venting takes place: air is allowed to escape from the stillpowdery, but compressed, material via two long apertures in the barrel. At this stage venting is atmospheric. The PVC is then compressed further before it reaches the second venting zone. In the second venting zone, the remaining volatile components are removed by means of a vacuum extraction system, as in conventional twin-screw extruders. ■ Benefits: Lower compression ratios, higher output A 36D machine with double venting is clearly superior to a 26D machine. It allows processing with significantly lower compression ratios in the highcompression phase. And output increases at the same time.
