Safety Patrol Handbook A Guide for Safety Patrol Members School Year 2016-2017 Resica Elementary School I promise to be safe in what I do; I am ready to learn and be responsible, too; Be respectful and caring every day; Watch me soar the Resica way PATROL RESPONSIBILITIES The patrol member’s job is to remind students of classroom, hallway, cafeteria, playground, and bus safety rules and to guide them in making safe choices on school property. Patrols receive instructions in guidelines and procedures during their training and regular patrol meetings. Duties of all patrols are listed below. Set a good example and encourage other students to also observe safety rules. Report for duty on time with proper equipment. Patrols will not be permitted to perform their scheduled duties if they are not wearing a patrol safety vest. Know and help fairly enforce all rules and regulations. Report any unsafe situations or behaviors to Ms. Kulick or Officer Hughes. Attend and participate in all patrol meetings and training sessions. Always be on time – For morning patrol, be at your post by 8:35 am. If you are going to be absent or unable to be at your post, you must let the office know by 8:20 am. You may call and leave a message on the office phone, 570-223-6911. Always stay at your post. Do not visit with friends while on duty. Do not treat your post as a position of power. It is not your responsibility to take disciplinary action against other students. Report any unsafe behavior to the Ms. Kulick, Officer Hughes, or the nearest adult. OTHER PATROL FUNCTIONS In their role of encouraging students to observe safety rules, patrols can have a significant, positive influence on their schoolmates. Patrols influence other students both formally as part of their regular duties, as well as informally because they serve as student role models of appropriate and safe behavior when not performing their official duties. Additionally, from time to time, Safety Patrol members may be asked to function as ambassadors when we have visitors. Safety Patrol Selection Process Jr. Safety Patrols are 3rd grade students and Safety Patrols are 4th and 5th grade students who have been chosen based upon their application, teacher recommendation, interview, and behavior. Consideration is based on student interest, commitment, sense of responsibility, and attitude toward others. In most cases, students who are dedicated to their schoolwork will be dedicated to patrol responsibilities. Each quarter 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will have an opportunity to apply to be a Safety Patrol or Jr. Safety Patrol member. Expectations Safety Patrol Member Standards All patrols are expected to be responsible students and role models. If a patroller consistently causes problems at school or in the classroom or does not maintain at least a C average in each class, the teacher, principal or patrol sponsor has the option to place the student on probation. This is solely at the discretion of the teacher, sponsor or administration. Teachers may also suggest that students be placed on probation. A patrol on probation will not be perform safety patrol duties during the probationary period. The patroller’s duties will be assumed by a designated patrol selected by the Ms. Kulick or Officer Hughes. A letter is sent to the patroller’s parents explaining the probation and the reason for taking the action. The probationary period lasts two weeks. This gives the student time to improve behavior, grades, or whatever problems caused the probation. The period of probation is monitored by the Ms. Kulick and the student’s teachers with the expectation that the student will improve and resume a responsible position. If, the probationary period, a patrol continues to demonstrate an inability to follow established guidelines, the patrol member will be on a 9 week suspension from the safety patrol. Behavior will again be monitored and based on the student’s behavior and teacher recommendation, may resume his or her position on the Safety Patrol. PATROLS AND OTHER STUDENTS Patrol members provide direction and assistance for schoolmates. Reports can be filled out and given to sponsors under the following suggested procedures for patrols: 1. If you notice a student not following expected behaviors, ask the student politely to stop the inappropriate behavior. 2. If the student continues, give the student a warning in a calm voice. 3. If the student still continues, give a second calm warning. 4. Record in the Safety Report Book if inappropriate behavior continues. 5. Give the Report Book to the office at the end of your shift. 3rd Grade Jr. Safety Patrol Warning Slip Student: ______________________________ Date: ______________ Disrespectful towards school or peer property Not keeping hands or feet to oneself.
