FSC Select Program FAQs - Coaches
What is the Select Program?
The USA Softball of Sacramento Select program (formerly known as the B Program) is designed to
create a more competitive environment for players to participate in while still remaining in a
recreational league setting. Players will participate in regular FSC recreational league play in
addition to being a member of an elite recreational Select team.
When are coaches chosen for the Select team?
Coaches are selected on an annual basis. Coach selection for 2017 will occur immediately and in the
future will occur in September of each year.
How are coaches chosen for the Select team?
Coaches must apply and interview with the FSC Executive Board. The Executive Board will make a
decision based on a variety of factors including: experience, coaching philosophy, feedback (if previous
coach), commitment to the FSC organization and the Select program, etc.
What is the coaching commitment?
Coaching the Select team is a 1 year commitment. Coaches will hold tryouts in November and should
use January and February to practice as a Select team as much as possible. Tournaments begin in March
as does recreational play where the Select players will join their regular recreational teams. During the
rec season, Select teams may continue to practice on non-tournament weekends after all regular rec
commitments have been fulfilled. During rec season, coaches will be asked to build relationships with
the regular rec coaches to remain consistent in the teaching of fundamentals. After the regular rec
season, the Select team will continue to participate in Select/All Star tournaments with the ultimate goal
of attending Nationals in July.
After the spring/summer season, the coach will continue play into the fall. The player commitment is
seasonal so the coach may hold a new tryout to replace any players who drop. The coach may choose to
play NorCal in the fall or play A tournaments. This will be at the coach’s discretion and of course he/she
would take into account the skill level of the team, cost, commitment, etc. when making this decision.
Do Select coaches have to re-apply year after year?
Yes. The Select program is very important to the success and longevity of the traditional recreational
program as a whole and we want to ensure we have the right coach in the role every year. We do have
loyalty to our successful and committed coaches so having coached the Select team in the previous
season will be given consideration in the selection process.
If I am chosen to coach the select team, can I also coach a rec team?
We discourage Select coaches from coaching a regular rec team within the same division. *If there is a
shortage of qualified coaches we may make an exception.
Is the goal of the Select program to covert Select teams to A teams the following year?
No. The goal of the Select program is to give advanced recreational players an opportunity to play at a
competitive level. The idea is to have these girls continue participation in the Select program year after
year increasing the level of play over time. The younger regular recreational players will aspire to be
Select players. Only the truly gifted athletes should graduate to A level play.
Do coaches have to pay for their daughter to participate in the Select program?
Yes. We appreciate the time and dedication of every coach. FSC coaches are not compensated and must
pay for their daughter to play.
Do Select Coaches choose their own team?
Yes. Select coaches should recruit and choose eligible players from an open tryout. If a player drops midseason or is injured the Select coach may fill that vacancy but he/she may not pull a player from an All
Star team once the team is formed. If the coach adds a player prior to all star formation, the coach
should retain that new player as that player is no longer eligible to play on another All Star roster.
How will the FSC board assist the Select coach?
The FSC board will assist with the communication regarding tryouts, provide a letter of
understanding/commitment form to be signed by all parents, provide field space March – October,
schedule regular season rec games around the select tournaments, provide ASA insurance, assist in
uniform coordination, banking, etc.…
