Team Facts
Papua New Guinea have taken part in two FIFA women’s competitions, namely the 2010 and 2014 editions of the
Girls Youth Olympic Football Tournament held in Singapore and Nanjing, where the islanders finished sixth and fifth
respectively.
This is the first time since 2004 that an Oceanian team other than New Zealand have participated in the U-20
Women’s World Cup. Australia were the last side to do so 12 years ago, while still an OFC member, since when the
sole Oceanian representatives in each of the last five editions have been New Zealand.

Team Facts
Sweden return to the finals of the competition six years since their only prior participation back in 2010, when they
succumbed 2-0 to Colombia in the quarter-finals after closing out the group stage unbeaten (with two wins and a
draw).
In 2015 Sweden secured their third continental crown at this level by overcoming Spain 3-1 in the final. The
Scandinavians’ two previous titles in the UEFA Women U-19 Championship date back to 2012 and 1999 (when it was
still an under-18 event).

Korea DPR featured in the last five editions and were crowned champions during their debut outing in 2006. They are
the only side to have broken the duopoly of Germany and USA, who have each won the competition three times.

Team Facts
Of all this year’s competing teams apart from debutants Papua New Guinea and Venezuela, Spain have waited the
longest to make their return to the finals of the U-20 Women’s World Cup. The Iberians’ last participation was in
Thailand 12 years ago, when they exited at the group stage.
Spain booked their passage to this edition by coming second in the UEFA Women U-19 Championship 2015. It was
the third final they had lost in four editions staged since 2012, a statistic that has since been extended to four in five,
following the Spaniards’ runners-up finish in the 2016 tournament.

Team Facts
Canada have hosted two of the seven previous editions, namely the inaugural edition in 2002 and the last
tournament two years ago. In 2002 the Canucks lost the final in extra time against USA, whereas in 2014 they were
stopped in the quarter-finals by Germany.
In the CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championship 2015, which doubled as the qualifying tournament for Papua New
Guinea 2016, the only goal Canada conceded in their five matches played was the one that gave USA victory in the
final, scored by Ashley Sanchez.

Facts to know about the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup is staged every two years.

The 2016 edition in Papua New Guinea will be the 8th FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The inaugural tournament took place in Canada in 2002 and was actually an U-19 event, which was
then changed to an U-20 event in Russia in 2006.

A total of 33 different teams have qualified for at least one of the final competitions, including the two
only debutants to this year’s tournament, Papua New Guinea and Venezuela.

Brazil, Germany, Nigeria and the USA are the only teams to have qualified for all final competitions held
to date.

With three titles and 29 wins in 40 matches Germany lead the Women’s U-20 All-time Ranking.

Germany has scored the most goals, namely 112 in 40 matches, an impressive average of 2.8 goals per
match.

The highest number of goals per match, 3.88, was recorded in the inaugural tournament in Canada in
2002, followed by 3.54 in Thailand in 2004 and 3.53 in Chile in 2008.

The youngest player to have taken part in this competition is Sydney Leroux (playing for Canada in 2004
– now for USA), who was just 14 years and 6 months old.

Mexico’s Charlyn Corral became the competition’s youngest goalscorer (at just 14 years and 11 months)
when she scored against Switzerland in August 2006.

21 players took part in three different editions but only two managed to score in three different
tournaments: Mexico’s Charlyn Corral (2006, 2008, 2010) and New Zealand’s Rosie White (2008, 2010,
2012).

Two players managed to score ten goals in a single event, Germany’s Alexandra Popp in 2010 and
Canada’s Christine Sinclair in 2002.

A new attendance record was set at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Germany 2010; 395,295 fans
in total with an average of 12,353 per match. Germany set a new benchmark that will be difficult to
beat.

Two final matches have had teams play from the same confederation. The USA played Canada in 2002
and Korea DPR played China PR in 2006.

Description
The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Trophy captures the youthful aspiration
demonstrated by the women competing in this FIFA tournament perfectly. It stretches
up in a pose of commitment and celebration and represents the graceful and dynamic
performance by these young athletes.
Two ‘arms’ embrace a football as a globe (a consistent feature amongst almost all of
FIFA’s event trophies), promising and delivering the world to the young women talented
enough to finally grasp their reward.

* FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship
Hat-tricks
20 players, representing nine different countries, have scored a hat trick in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Inevitably, Christine
Sinclair (CAN) and Kim Un Hwa (PRK) head the list scoring five goals for their country. Brazil’s Marta scored the very first hat-trick in
a 4-0 victory over France in 2002.
