Instruction:
1. What are Wimba Voice Tools?
Wimba’s web-based voice tools facilitate and promote vocal instruction, collaboration,
coaching and assessment. Increase the interaction and student engagement level of any
online class by allowing faculty and students to easily embed vocal interactions into the
page level of their myASU Courses site.
2. What you need to know

Wimba uses Java

It is important to understand that when you first access Wimba on a Windows machine, it
will take up to 30 seconds to launch because it is accessing Java

Once it has finished loading Java, it runs much quicker
3. Using Wimba Voice Tools

Wimba Voice Tools are available for use in content areas of the Blackboard shell

When you access a content area, choose the tool you wish to use from the drop-down
menu in the top right of the action bar, then click Go
4. Voice Direct

Voice Direct is good for live conversation, much like a chat

This real-time voice conferencing feature allows for:

Live oral language instruction

Conferences
o
Discussions
o
Debates

To Create:
Control Panel > content area > choose Voice Direct from drop-down menu in the upper
right corner > click Go > enter Name > enter Description > choose Audio Quality
(Standard) > choose Link to (A New Conference) > Archive Automatically (Yes) > choose
Open in New Window > click Submit

To Participate:
Click the link > you will enter the chat room > click the hand to allow you to speak > click
the X when finished > only one person can speak at a time > you can also type your
question in the blank field provided if you don’t have a microphone (press enter when
finished typing)
5. Voice Board

This tool enables you to have a threaded voice board, a speaking discussion board
essentially

You can include text with your voice

To Create:
Control Panel > content area > choose Voice Board from drop-down menu > click Go >
enter Name > enter Description > choose Audio Quality (Standard) > choose message
length > choose options > choose Open in New Window > click Submit

To Start a New Thread:
Click New to start a new thread > click Red Record Button > speak into your microphone
> click Square Stop Button when finished > click Post (large upward facing arrow)

To Reply to a Thread:
Click on a thread > click Play button to listen to the post > click Reply button > click Red
Record Button > speak into your microphone > click Square Stop Button when finished >
click Post

Edit Post:
Click on your thread > click Edit > record new message > cannot edit, only replace
recording > Post

Delete
Click on a thread > click Delete

Forward a Post
Click on a thread > click Forward > enter email address > click message below Subject
field > click Send > an email with a link to the post is sent to the recipient

Import
Click Import > choose your audio file (.mp3, .wav, .spx, .wvb only and smaller than 10
mb) > click Ok

Export
You can export a thread or the entire conversation > click Export > choose what you
want to export > choose the format of the your export > click Next > choose the location
of where you want to save it on your computer > click Save

Options
You can choose to:
o
Play the audio on click
o
Continuous play
o
Expand All
o
Collapse All
o
Refresh the list to see new posts
6. Voice Authoring

This tool enables you to create Voice Announcements, instructions or key summary items
from a lecture into a course page

To Create:
Control Panel > content area > choose Voice Authoring from drop-down menu > click
Go > click Red Record Button > speak message > click Square Stop Button > enter Title >
click Submit

To Play:
Students simply click on the play button on the recorder displayed with the
announcement
7. Voice Email

This tool enables voice emails

To Create:
Control Panel > content area > choose Voice Email from drop-down menu > click Go >
enter Title > enter Description > choose Audio Quality (Standard) > choose message
length > choose options > choose recipients > choose Open in New Window > click
Submit

To Record Message:
Click the link > enter Subject > click Red Record Button > speak into your microphone >
click Square Stop Button when finished > you can type a message below the recorder >
click Send (large upward facing arrow)
8. Voice Announcement

This tool enables you to add audio announcements

To Create:
Control Panel > in the Tools area, click Voice Announcement > enter Subject > type
Message > click Red Record Button to record your audio message > choose your Display
Options (always show or date restrictions) > click Submit
NOTE: you cannot Modify your announcement > if you need to change it, you’ll need to
remove it and rerecord it
9. Voice Presentation

This tool enables you to provide links to websites with verbal instructions of what to review
or an explanation of the site

To Create:
Control Panel > content area > choose Voice Presentation from drop-down menu > click
Go > enter Title > enter Description > choose Audio Quality (Standard) > choose message
length > choose options > click Submit

To Add Pages:
Click on link > click New > enter Subject > type or paste URL > record message by clicking
Red Record Button/Square Stop Button > type additional instructions under recorder >
click Post
10. Wimba Podcaster

This tool enables you to create audio podcasts within Blackboard

This tool works much like the Voice Board in that you can record a Podcast (or post) and
it can be edited, deleted, imported and exported

These can be exported to iTunes and uploaded to an iPod

Students can subscribe so that they are notified when new Podcasts are added

To Create:
Control Panel > content area > choose Wimba Podcaster from drop-down menu > click
Go > enter Title (replace “podcast_name” with name of podcast) > enter Description >
choose Audio Quality (Standard) > choose options > choose length for auto-publishing >
choose Open in New Window > click Submit
