VFirst Serve As another year starts we are faced with new challenges in life, no matter how big or small these challenges are, we all have to deal with them! Aren’t we lucky that we can all go down to our tennis club, unwind, play a game of tennis with our friends, have a drink, partake in a little bit of gossip and we are ready to face the world once again! In my travels around Australia I often visit Tennis clubs and I just can’t help feeling that we are so lucky to have such grand facilities compared to other regional centre’s and even to some metropolitan areas! We are just so fortunate to have club members that give up their time for the betterment of our facilities. In the past I have asked our members with ideas on how to improve our clubhouse/facilities and one of the suggestions was to get a few more overhead fans. These have now been donated by Kevin Robinson (a BIG thank you Kevin) and are in the process of being installed. I welcome more suggestions from our members as we are here to continually strive to improve on what I already consider as “excellent facilities” For our club to continue being successful we need our members to support us in whatever way possible. One way is for you to come down on a Saturday or even midweek, have a game with us and even better, you could bring a friend along as we need to increase our membership. Some of you may not know it but our Web page has been updated and I would encourage you to jump on the net and have a look. It’s an easy way of informing yourself of upcoming events, down load forms or even browse the pictures! Our courts are in excellent condition and a HUGE thank you goes to our ever green Val Knott and his helpers, Nils Anderson and Ken Roach. Speaking of Val, I know that he hasn’t been feeling his best over the last couple of months so I want to wish him a speedy recovery and I look forward to see you on the courts at your usual competitive best! We are now heading towards “tennis weather” so pick up your gear and come down and enjoy yourself. Alex Karatamoglou, President Vol. 4 February 2014 Upcoming Events Sunday 9th February Club Championships Doubles Tournament Sundowner Gold Coin Donation Wednesday 12th February Twilight Tennis 4.30 onwards Sunday 9th March Club Championships Singles Tournament Security Due to a recent unfortunate event, we would like to remind all members to be very careful with their belongings while playing at the club. Remember to keep your valuables in an area that is visable and secure. Also if you witness anyone who does not look like they belong at the club, please make sure that you keep a close eye on them and if needed question them about what they are doing within the grounds. Club Championship Tournaments Our Club Championships begin this week on Sunday 9th of February and we are looking forward to some great action out on the court. The singles event will be held in a month on Sunday 9 th of March and the mixed doubles event will run on the 16th of March. With member support we can turn these events into a highlight of the season, with larger numbers we are able to run two divisions catering for all levels of player. If you don’t feel comfortable finding your own partner let us know and we will do our best to find you one. We would love to see some of our new members stepping out onto the court during club champs and some of our not so new members who haven’t played club champs for a few seasons! No excuses, let’s all support our club, get our entries in and make a great day of it. www.bunburytennisclub.com.au Page 1 of 3 Social Scene Junior’s News Our Christmas Event was a great success with lots of members and families enjoying the festivities. We will be holding a sundowner after this Sunday’s Doubles tournament, if you would like to participate it will be a gold coin donation and we encourage you to all stick around for a bite to eat and share a drink with other competitors. As the season goes on we will confirm more events so keep an eye out in your Monday memo, Around the Grounds for any upcoming events. This season has seen a reduction in numbers attending social events at the club, if you have any feedback or ideas on what you would like to see more or less of please approach a member of the board or drop us an email at [email protected]. We are here for the members and want to do what we can to make this a dynamic social club. It has been a busy start to the season with the D’arcy Slater Cup, the Foundation Cup, Rex Chidgzey Day and the Motor Class 500. All of which were well supported by our juniors. In regards to the D’arcy Slater Cup I need to say a huge thank you to Nicole Frayne and her band of Mum's that catered for this competition. It was an awesome effort and very much appreciated - thank you! We are starting back after the Christmas break on Friday 7th of February. It will be great to see you all back after the long summer holidays. We are trialling some new things with the juniors and one of these is the Junior Cardio Session. For $5 per child we will be running a cardio session following Junior social tennis, from 6 pm to 7 pm. We also have some fantastic competitions coming this term as well. A great one to enter is the 2014 John Cartledge Junior Classic - this will be held in Bridgetown on Sunday February 16th. This tournament is suitable for all levels of tennis and I encourage you all to give it a go. Another that is coming up soon is the Boyup Brook Open Tennis Tournament - this will be held in Boyup Brook on March 1st and 2nd. Unfortunately, I am going to have to postpone the next parent child competition on Saturday February 15th. I will let you know the date of a new one once I have consulted with the senior club and the tennis calendar. On a sad note this will be my last term as the Junior Director and I am looking for someone who will take on this role next season. It is not hard and is very enjoyable. If you are interested in this position next season then please see me and I will let you know all the details and pass on what knowledge I have. D’Arcy Slater Foundation Cup The D'Arcy Slater Cup 2013 saw 82 boys, 13 years and under, come to the Bunbury Tennis Club and compete in some fantastic tennis.
