Dentistry Our Philosophy At Pacific Crest Sporthorse we believe in a thorough, yet gentle, approach to dental care. Our goal is to stay abreast of the most current research regarding proper techniques, and to maintain your horse on a regular dental maintenance schedule. We want you to be confident that your horse’s health and performance will never be compromised because of mouth discomfort. Benefits By maintaining a healthy and well-balanced mouth, you’ll achieve the following health benefits: Promote effective chewing to maximize nutrition Prevent colic and choke Protect the mouth’s soft tissues Prevent neck and back pain Alleviate problems in the “golden years” While a well-balanced mouth is key to your horse’s general health, we also believe that proper dental care will help you and your horse compete to the best of your abilities. Whether your discipline is jumping, dressage, or barrel racing, you are often separated from the competition by the slimmest of margins. By maximizing bit comfort and helping prevent musculoskeletal pain, we believe that current dentistry procedures are not only critical for basic health, but can also maximize your horse’s performance. Basic Dental Services Through years of experience, the veterinary community has learned that proper care of your horse’s teeth involves more than a few minutes of filing. Rather, it requires expert shaping of incisors and molars so that all teeth work in balance with one another. Our equipment is top-of-the-line and includes a PowerFloat, an angled and straight head Makita, and a dremmel for incisor and bit seat work. We are equipped to perform dental procedures at your farm or at our clinic. Beyond the Basics Occasionally, we may find that your horse has more dental issues that require a referral to be properly addressed. Such issues include significant tooth decay and advanced periodontal disease requiring surgical extraction. If this is the case, we have an excellent referral relationship with Dave Klugh, DVM, FACVD Equine. Dr. Klugh is a dental specialist who is board certified with the American College of Veterinary Dentistry, and is considered one of the leading equine dentists both in the US and abroad.
