Little research had been done on primary school teachers' oral hygiene practices and knowledge of
common dental diseases. Most studies that have been carried out are on teachers as oral hygiene
educators. With this gap in knowledge and the fact that teachers have more influence on children as
parents are taking their children to school at an earlier age, this study was carried out. This
descriptive cross sectional study aimed at determining the oral hygiene practices and knowledge of
common dental diseases in primary school teachers in Nairobi. The hypothesis stated that teachers
had poor oral hygiene practices but had adequate knowledge on oral hygiene practices and common
dental diseases. Questionnaires were distributed to 152 teachers who had taught for at least 2 years.
92 teachers responded correctly to the questionnaires issued by the investigator. Most of the
teachers had adequate knowledge on oral hygiene practices and did carry out the good oral hygiene
habits. Their knowledge on common dental diseases was however not adequate. Most had an idea
on the causes, presentation and prevention of dental caries and gum disease. A minority knew or
had heard of dental fluorosis and only a handful could mention other dental diseases besides those
stated in the questionnaire. Teachers generally have good oral hygiene practices but were not well
informed on the presentation, causes and prevention of common dental diseases. Teachers in
training colleges should be equipped with knowledge on common dental diseases and oral hygiene
practices. Continuous education should also be offered to teachers in schools so as to keep them up
to date and enable them to influence their pupils positively and the community at large.
