Unit 18: Acids and Bases
Think-Tac-Toe Activity
Name: ____________________________
Activities Chosen: _____________________________
Directions: Choose your own assignment! Complete any three activities on this sheet. Make sure you choices make a winning tic-tac-toe board by choosing
three directly across, three diagonal, or three straight down. These completed assignments are due on the day of your Unit 17 test (4/27/13). Include this

Compare and contrast the three different
definitions for an acid. Use words and some
kind of visual organizer to show the
relationship between these definitions.
Construct a second organizer doing the same
for definitions of bases.
Create a visual organizer to help
differentiate the rules for naming acids
(think: flowchart, etc). Make sure to include
examples, and make sure that your rules work
for all kinds of acids.
Explore the concept of an acid/base
indicator. Label at least 10 indicators used in
the lab on a color wheel in their appropriate
positions (each indicator should be labeled
for at least two different colors). Find and
label an additional 3 indicators that are
considered to be “food safe” or created from
food sources.

Create a game in which you use a pH scale to
identify household substances as weak or
strong acids or bases. Be sure to include
rules, game pieces, and blank pH scales.
Define all the terms from chapter 18 (use
p. 671 for the list).
Select at least two acids and create a collage
representing characteristics of the
substances and information related to where
they are used, where they are found, etc.
Create a second collage for two bases of your
choice.

Walk a mile in the shoes of a book restorer, a
photograph developer/restorer, or a stone
conservator (see me for reference
materials). Create a brochure for one of
these professions in which you explain how a
good knowledge of acid/base chemistry is
important for the job.
You’re a “profiler.” Write and illustrate a full
and useful profile of an acid or base used in
the food industry with an emphasis on why
and how it’s used. Be sure to include
examples of which foods this substance is
found in.
Create a presentation that fully explores the
environmental damage due to acid rain. Use
at least 3 forms of media in your
presentation.
(Use p. 637 to get started). You must be
available to present this during WEB on
5/1/13.
These definitions should be typed and
numbered.
