Organisers of the event were fulsome in their praise for the host clubs who were all rewarded with well above average attendances. Deeping kicked the event off with a home match against Harborough in the top flight on Friday 1 st August – the earliest date a league match had taken place in the league’s 119 year history. Goals from Ben Lewis, Ryan Oliver and Dan Flack gave Rangers a 3-0 victory in front of a crowd of 307. One blemish for the home side was the dismissal of goalscorer Lewis on his first Deeping start. An early start on Saturday morning saw 206 spectators watch Yaxley start their season with a 3-1 win over Long Buckby at In2Itive Park. An Andy Coleman opener and Dan Cotton double gave the Cuckoos the points with Ricky Hailstone’s own goal gifting Buckby a consolation. The evening match saw Peterborough Sports and Bugbrooke get the Division One campaign up and running with a 1-1 Lincoln Road stalemate, Ryan Ansell’s first half Badgers opener cancelled out by a Matt Simpson reply for Sports in front of 283. The Sunday morning match between Peterborough Northern Star and Holbeach drew the highest attendance of the four games with 357 at the Mick George Arena to see the well fancied Tigers open up with a 6-1 win, an outcome which seemed unlikely when Jordan Macleod gave Star the lead. Jonny Clay’s conceding of a penalty for which he was red carded proved a turning point and after Lee Beeson converted from the spot Holbeach stormed to an emphatic victory with further goals from Ash Fuller, Liam Parker, two goal Livo Dube and Jake Duffy, while Star also had Phil Stebbing dismissed in the second period. A second hop to get the 2015-16 campaign underway at the start of August next year has already been pencilled in. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE NEWSLETTER NO. 290 SEPTEMBER 2014 PAGE 2 Jones accident overshadows Sleaford start The start of the new season was overshadowed by a road accident on 4th August which left Sleaford manager Kris Jones fighting for his life. The 33 year old was involved in a crash on the A1 near Newark and taken to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham with life threatening injuries. Kris has since been transferred to Lincoln and is making gradual if slow progress on the road to recovery. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Kris and his family at this difficult time. Assistant manager Terry Fleming, former Lincoln City captain and Lincoln United manager, has taken temporary charge of the Eslaforde Park squad which picked up its first points of the new season by beating visiting Eynesbury 3-1 on 30th August with goals from Adam Weston, Scott Coupland and Harry Millard. Left sided player Luke Hollingworth from Holbeach is the most recent recruit at Eslaforde Park, but star summer signing Mitch Griffiths was tempted away by higher grade Spalding after just one match in Sleaford colours. Doughboys axe Watts Wellingborough parted company with manager Ben Watts and assistant Ash Civil after the Doughboys had lost their first three league games and exited the FA Cup at the first hurdle. The pair only arrived at the Dog & Duck in April and were in charge for just ten games in total, just one of which ended in victory. Taking over is a joint managerial partnership of Joe Smyth and Steve Herring. The duo had only left Burton Park in pre season and previously enjoyed great success at Whitworth. Smyth has also been in charge at Thrapston and begins a second spell in charge of the Doughboys having previously held the reins from October 2008 to May 2009. Steve’s brother Mark Herring will assist the new bosses. He enjoyed a long and successful spell at the Whitworths helm. The incoming management are poised to introduce new blood to the squad after taking a couple of games to assess the players inherited. Former AFC Rushden & Diamonds midfielder Louis Smith has become the first new recruit brought in by Smyth and Herring. New faces signed by the previous management team include defender Rashid Koriya from AFC Rushden & Diamonds and front men Jake Reynolds (Rushden & Higham) and Jordan Crawford (Stewarts & Lloyds). The new regime kicked off with a 3-2 defeat at Hsrborough on 30th August, but fared better in their second match in charge, a 4-2 win at Desborough on 2nd September. A Gokhan Ulker double and singles from Michael Cirelli and Scott Liebscher gave Wellingborough their first win of the new campaign.. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE NEWSLETTER NO. 290 SEPTEMBER 2014 PAGE 3 Changes to Harrowby management team Premier Division newboys Harrowby became the first club to make a managerial change when parting company with co-manager Jason Harrison just three games into the new campaign. Harrison had previously managed the club in the last of their three previous seasons in the top flight, and left his current spell with the Arrows after their defeat at Clipstone in their first ever FA Cup tie. Mark Fardell will now be in sole charge at the Environcom Stadium with Simon Mayes stepping up from a coaching role to assist him. In the league Harrowby have made a good start on their top flight return, seven points from three home matches leaving them in the top five at the end of August. Since beating Chertsey 2-1 at Byfield Road on 7 April 2012 they had lost 44 successive home league games! The new season opened with a first day defeat by Raunds, but on 16 th August two goals from assistant boss Ben Foster and one from manager Adam Knight gave the Reds a 3-2 win over St Neots Saints. A wide player, he has played in the Scottish League for Elgin City. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE NEWSLETTER NO. 290 SEPTEMBER 2014 PAGE 8 Injury woes for Spencer Long term injuries continue to hamper Northampton Spencer with a number of key men sidelined in the early weeks of the new season. Midfielder Dean Hall suffered a broken leg in Spencer’s second match of the campaign at Buckingham and will miss the remainder of the year, while Josh Melling damaged knee ligaments in the FA Cup defeat against Kempston and faces another six weeks on the sidelines. Hamstring trouble will rule out Paul Pickering for a further month. There is better news on a couple of long term absentees. CHROMASPORT & TROPHIES UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE NEWSLETTER NO. 290 SEPTEMBER 2014 PAGE 9 Quartet still on the FA Cup trail The FA Cup has featured prominently on clubs’ early season fixture lists with the opening two rounds taking place in August. Just four clubs were left standing as the competition reached the First Qualifying Round stage. Toughest test in the draw faces Boston Town, who will visit former UCL club Kings Lynn Town. The Poachers have made progress with two away wins so far. In the Extra Preliminary Round a Matt Kennedy penalty miss proved costly as the Poachers were held 1-1 by Walsham le Willows, but he atoned in the midweek replay in Suffolk with a double strike giving the Poachers a 3-1 victory, Jordan Nuttell also on target. Boston followed up with a 4-2 success at league leaders Holbeach in the Preliminary Round, goals from Alex Beck, Kennedy, Callum Walker and Lori Borbely seeing off the ten man Tigers. AFC Kempston progressed through two ties with wins over other UCL clubs. They started with a 2-0 success at Northampton Spencer, Nyasha Sagwete and Sam Johnson on the mark, and followed up with a 4-0 Hillgrounds defeat of Sileby, Ben Gallant scoring two and Grant Fryer and Scott Joseph one apiece. The Walnut Boys now entertain North Greenford. Renowned FA Cup fighters Wisbech go to Norwich United in the First Qualifying Round. The Fenmen started with a 3-1 Extra Preliminary Round victory at Sleaford with a Fraser Bayliss opener and Josh Ford double, and followed up with a 2-1 home win over Kirkley & Pakefield, Stuart Cobb and Ford on the mark as they overturned an early spot kick. After reaching the Third Qualifying Round last season AFC Rushden & Diamonds needed a Preliminary Round replay at Bedford Town to dispose of the Eagles. An excellent performance saw Tom Lorraine, Jason Turner and Matt Gearing on target in a 3-0 success over their higher grade hosts. A late Gearing goal in the Dog & Duck meeting had given Diamonds a second chance. Diamonds had earlier beaten Oxhey 5-1 at the Dog & Duck with a Fazel Koriya hat trick, Turner effort and an own goal. Five more clubs had enjoyed victories in the Extra Preliminary Round. League newboys Thurnby saw off Lincoln Moorlands 5-1 at Dakyn Road with Ash Day, Matt Melbourme, two goal Reece Morris and Jurelle Phillip sharing the goals, before a 3-1 exit to higher level Mickleover in the Preliminary Round. Livo Dube’s hat trick and singles from Ash Fuller and Jake Duffy saw Holbeach through 5-1 at Diss. Sileby made a successful bow in the national competition as first half goals from Brian Farrell, Dominic Okanu (penalty) and Lynval Da Costa saw them overcome Hillingdon 3-0 at Fernie Fields. Peterborough Northern Star were comfortable 3-0 home winners over Team Bury with Luke Hunnings, Phil Stebbing and Avelino Vieira all on the scoresheet before bowing out 2-0 to Mildenhall Cogenhoe needed a replay to dispose of a useful Wembley side, Dan Thomason and two goal Sam Heavey the marksmen in a 3-1 Vale Farm victory. That success earned the Cooks a glamour tie at home to Kettering and the Cooks were far from disgraced in a 4-1 loss to the Poppies in front of a crowd of 397, the highest recorded in a competitive fixture at Compton Park. The four survivors have earned £3,425 from their two victories so far, and will be looking to add a further £3,000 from progress in the next stage. The five clubs who were successful in the Extra Preliminary Round only won £1,500 from the prize fund. Both Bourne close season recruit from Peterborough Northern Star Jezz Goldson-Williams and Buckingham’s summer capture from Winslow Drew Mitten made instant impacts with their new clubs, scoring seven goals in just four August matches. The pair were on opposite sides on the month’s final Saturday with two early Goldson-Williams strikes giving the Wakes a two goal Abbey Lawn advantage only for Mitten to fire a match winning Robins hat trick to take the points back to Manor Fields. The hat trick was Mitten’s second of the season after an opening day treble against Peterborough Sports while he was also on target in Buckingham’s defeat by Northampton Spencer. Goldson-Williams was also on the losing side in Bourne’s season opener against Irchester despite scoring three times and he then scored in the draws at St Neots Saints and at home to Lutterworth Athletic.
