NEW MEDICARE MODIFIERS – XE, XP, XS, XU. These four new modifiers
to use instead of Modifier 59.
CMS is encouraging providers to adopt the modifier quickly, they may be used by
Medicare and considered valid even before national edits are in place on January 1 st.

MODIFIER - XE : Separate Encounter : A service that is distinct because it occurred
during a separate encounter.
MODIFIER - XP : Separate Practitioner: A service that is distinct because it was
performed by a different practitioner.
MODIFIER - XS : Separate Structure: A service that is distinct because it was
performed by a separate organ / structure.
MODIFIER - XU : Unusual NON-OVERLAPPING Service: the use of a service that
is distinct because it does not overlap usual components of the main service.
Please use these modifier for any different encounters, anatomic sites, and services. Do
not attach these to the E/M service.
Modifier 59, will not go away and will continue to be a valid modifier, according to
Medicare. However, do not use 59 when the modifier XE,Xp XS or XU is available.
