How do I arrange to see my child’s Class Teacher? NORTHWAY INFANT SCHOOL Lists are posted in each Classroom for you to choose an appropriate time. If you are not able to attend on the allotted day, or cannot attend for some other reason, Class Teachers will be happy to arrange an alternative day and time at the start or end of the normal working day. Here is a checklist of questions you might find helpful: What are my child's strengths? Has my child shown any special talents? What is my child finding difficult? How can I help with this? Can you show me any examples of these? Does my child try hard enough? Does my child join in class discussions? How can I help with my child's schoolwork in general? Has my child made sufficient progress since his/her last report? Is my child happy at school? Has my child made friends? Does my child's behaviour give any cause for concern? Remember... If the teacher says anything you don't understand, don't be afraid to ask them to explain what they mean. If you feel nervous about meeting teachers, remember that they probably feel the same way about meeting parents. Making the most of Parent’s evening INFORMATION LEAFLET FOR PARENTS Dear Parents, “Schools have parent evenings so that teachers and parents can meet to discuss how the child is doing. It is important for you to attend parent evenings. Many schools have appointment systems and will arrange a time for you to see the teacher. These appointments usually last around 10 minutes, so it is best to make sure you are armed with questions. Read your child's last report before you go to talk about your child at school. If possible, look at some of your child's schoolwork. Usually, the school will ask you to attend without your child. Some schools, however, encourage pupils to attend as well so that they can set targets for the coming year.” DfE Parents have the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress informally at the start of every day, we believe that this is a great strength of our school, and feed back from Parents confirms that you value this opportunity. Parent’s evening is a formal opportunity for you to talk to you child’s class teacher about their strengths, areas for development and attitudes to learning. more progress to attain the Governments expectations for a pupil of their age. Alternatively it is possible for a child to be attaining very well for a pupil of their age compared to the Governments expectations, but may not have made as much progress they might have done. I hope that this explains the difference between achievement (progress made for them as an individual) and attainment (the level at which they are working compared to National expectations). Every child is an individual with their own strengths, and character and children develop in very many ways throughout their education. Their academic progress is affected by their self esteem, attitudes to learning and maturity. During Parent’s evening your child’s teacher will be keen to hear your views and discuss your child’ learning and social and emotional development. The Teacher will want to share with you any concerns and ways in which you can support your child’ progress. The Teacher will talk to you about your child’s progress during their time in the class, how much progress they have made since the last time that you met with a Teacher formally, this is described as their achievement. The Teacher might well also talk to you about your child’s attainment, that means how well your child is doing academically compared with the Governments’ Curriculum expectations for a pupil of a similar age to your child. Your child might have made a great deal of progress and show a good rate of achievement and tried very hard but may need to make a little If your child has been attending school for more than a term you will have talked to a Teacher about Learning Targets and will have been given a copy of targets specific to your child.
