Parade of the Northwest Instructions
The Detroit Lakes Jaycees are pleased to welcome you to Detroit Lakes and to the 82nd Annual Water Carnival
Parade of the Northwest. Please read and follow these instructions carefully to ensure the parade runs
smoothly:
Assembly: All units should report to parade start to receive their line-up number; this is located at the corner
of Oak Grove Avenue and West State Street (the parking lot of the Chamber of Commerce). The position
numbers will be posted on signs on the boulevard. Unless it is raining, all buses must exit the parade staging
area after discharging members. Buses/extra trailers may park in the Fairgrounds on South Rossman Avenue.
All entries, political and otherwise, are responsible for their own signs and decorations.
Parade Continuity:
 All units must maintain a distance of 20 feet from the preceding unit.
 If your unit will be throwing candy, be sure to throw candy as far from the unit as possible.
 Marching Band: Must maintain a proper distance at all times and should hold counter-marching to a
minimum.
 Dignitaries riding in convertibles or other vehicles must remain in their cars along the parade route.
Distributing literature or any printed material is not allowed along the parade route. You are not
allowed to hand anything out while sitting in your car or float. If your item cannot be thrown you must
have walkers distribute the items to parade-goers.
 Please bring your own water, as the parade is long and usually very hot!
Dressing and Washrooms: The Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center will provide dressing areas if
needed and is located on Summit Avenue near the parade start.
Animals: If your unit will have animals you must have someone following your unit cleaning up after them.
If you do not have anyone to do this you will not be allowed to go through the parade. Any unit with horses
will automatically be placed at the end of the lineup, unless the participants have designated waste
removal personnel that follow the unit.
Politicians: Political entries may not throw candy, hand-out campaign literature, etc. along the parade route.
Politicians may not walk the parade route: he or she must remain in the vehicle or on their float at all times.
