Literacy:
This term we will be studying a variety of persuasive texts. The children will be writing letters, manifestoes and speeches relating to our Election Fever
Topic. We will also cover discussion texts, newspaper reports and will develop narrative skills further.
Children will be taught the relevant grammar and
language skills relating to these genres. Reading
comprehension will continue through Literacy lessons and Guided Reading tasks.
Maths:
During the Summer term, we will revisit some areas
of study; building upon skills and extending learning further. Such topics include: negative numbers
and interpreting these in context, efficient written
methods for addition/subtraction of larger numbers, written methods for multiplication/division,
addition and subtractions of fractions and solving
problems using knowledge of angles. In addition to
these areas, we will also cover volume, time and
money - using all four operations to solve problems
involving measure (e.g. length, mass, volume, money) and the children will learn to calculate the area
and perimeter of regular/irregular shapes, including
working to a given scale.
Science:
As we are focussing on our Election Fever topic
during the first half term, Year 5 will block the Summer Term’s Science learning after the May holiday.
Our focus will be Living Things and Their Habitats.
Learning will include classification of living things
into broad groups according to common, observable characteristics and based on similarities
and differences, including plants, animals and micro
-organisms. We will also begin to understand how
adaptation, evolution and the life processes of living things link to their habitats. Additionally, we will
continue to develop scientific working skills,
through the undertaking of investigations.
This term has a very significant event happening in
the UK. It is the General Election. It is incredibly important that our children understand the importance of voting and why we need a democracy in
this country. Election Fever introduces this in a fascinating way: it combines history with humour and
encourages the children to think about what it
means to have an election. We will be running our
own elections in school and finding out about past
leaders who inspire future generations. Try to think
what inspires you
and what things you
believe in.
Spiritual, Moral, Social and
Cultural Development:
This term we will be looking
at democracy as well as; The
Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with other beliefs.
PSHE:
Both Year Groups will go on
the campaign trail, creating
their own manifestos in
their attempts to becoming
house captains. Inspire,
Challenge, Believe, Enjoy
will all need a leader—
could you be the right one?
History:
We will be focusing on the main changes in British politics,
in relation to democracy. We will use terms such as: social,
religious, political, technological and cultural. We will find
out about the origins of democracy and how our system
has evolved into what we have today. We will find out
about leaders from the past, what they represented and
why they were successful.
Geography:
Nottingham, Rushcliffe, West Bridgford. The children will
be finding out what these places look like on maps and
how they are divided into voting regions. We will look at
how Constituencies and Wards are made up and how
voting is effected by their make up.
Design Technology:
ROBOT WARS. After our Election Fever Topic, we will have
be carrying out a block of DT work. We will investigate
electrics and mechanics and put them together to create
our own Robots.
Religious Education:
Beliefs and Questions—Islam/Hinduism
How do people’s beliefs about God, the world and others
have impact on their lives?
