Geometry F-2
This workshop will engage F-2 teachers in learning experiences aimed at building students’ spatial
knowledge and reasoning. Differentiated, hands-on and engaging learning experiences for
developing deep conceptual understanding, using visualisation and concrete materials will feature
in this session. Connections to the Australian Curriculum Mathematics, Content and Proficiency
Strands will be made throughout the session.

Calling teachers from Foundation – Year 2
Would you like to extend yourself as a mathematical practitioner? Do you wonder how others are
teaching Mathematics in their contexts? By sharing your ideas you will help to develop a
mathematical learning community. By collaborating and connecting with others we can grow in
our own practice and nurture strong mathematical learners.
Please join us for a relaxed meeting to share our pedagogy and create a network of professionals
who can support each other. The next “Teach-meet” will take place at The Maid Hotel, 1 Magill
Road, Stepney on Thursday 22nd June from 4.30-6.30pm.
While there is no charge to be part of this, we hope that you would buy a drink or two and even
consider staying on for a meal afterwards. Please reply an expression of interest to MASA 8362 4332,
or email [email protected]
2
Reminder: The MASA Quiz Night is approaching. Team nominations need to be
received at the office preferably before the end of this term.
There will be a slightly different focus this year with a couple of different types of
problems rather than the traditional ones.
Get your entries in before the end of Term 2 (30th June)

NMSS is a two week residential school held each January at the
Australian National University for mathematically gifted and talented
senior high school students.
Dates for next year: 7-20 January 2018
History and Purpose
The NMSS was established under the joint educational sponsorship of the ANU and the Australian
Association of Mathematics Teachers in 1969 by the late Professor A.L. Blakers AM of the
University of Western Australia. Almost 3,000 students from all states and territories around
Australia have attended the NMSS.
Academic Program
The main activity of NMSS is an in-depth study of three or four different areas of mathematics. Each
is very challenging and will extend every student. On the other hand, the program is noncompetitive and very much hands-on. The emphasis is on doing mathematics, not just on listening
to someone else talking about it.

MASA Junior Secondary Mathematics Enrichment Project 2017
Developing Powerful Learners
Jointly sponsored by The Mathematical Association of SA Inc.
and
The Department for Education and Child Development (DECD)
Teaching and Learning Services
The Mathematics Enrichment Project is an open-ended mathematical investigation with the
student’s choice of topic
 Students should aim to choose an original and novel concept. Real world problems
are often most interesting.
 Think about how they are going to gain information, collect data and analyse their
results.
 They can work as an individual, a member of a group (maximum of five students) or as part
of a class.
 Their project must have a title and all references and assistance (including teachers
and parents) must be acknowledged.
 They should aim to interest their audience.

Workshop Description:
A wide variety of proven strategies will be discussed for engaging all Year 8 to 10 students in an
exciting initiative which is an extension of good teaching practice. Possible project topics will be
discussed, with actual completed projects made available for perusing and the marking rubric will
be used to assess the projects. The conditions for submission at State and National judging level will
be clarified.
The Junior Secondary Mathematics Enrichment Project is supported by the Department for
Education and Child Development enabling MASA to award generous prizes.

Early Careers Conference – 2 for one offer!
Friday 21st July is the date for the one day Early Careers Conference to be held this year at St
Peter’s Junior School. [Those who register for this conference are offered free entry to the Texas
Instruments one day STEM conference hosted at Urrbrae Agricultural High School on Thursday 20th
July].
The price of attendance is $110 for registered teachers and half-price ($55) for pre-service teachers
and students.
Early Careers conferences are a great opportunity to pick up “life hacks” for teachers. This year the
registration form offers you, the customer, a chance to communicate the topics you would like to
see covered and MASA will endeavour to shape the conference material to meet your needs.
Early registrations will have the greater influence as we must make our preparations and tap our
experts in good time.

Education Perfect is a major sponsor of MASA in 2017
Education Perfect is providing free access to
NAPLAN revision resources
Click here to express your interest.
We're excited to let you know that we’ll be offering complimentary
access to automatically marked revision material for Year 7 and 9
students in the lead up to NAPLAN tests.
This material includes a number of NAPLAN-style tests for numeracy,
language conventions, reading and writing that are automatically
marked and linked to recommendations. These analyse and target
students' strengths and weaknesses, and from this, recommend lessons that aim to fill those gaps.
This analysis provides an individual learning pathway for each student. These lessons can be used to
help students learn at their own pace to prepare for NAPLAN.
Education Perfect for English is an online learning platform with content set up to suit the Australian
Curriculum, available all year round.
Teacher logins are free, activate yours here now.

NEW 2017 Revision Guides
Revision Guides for the four new subjects of the Year 12 SACE Mathematics curriculum are being
finalised right now. New content but same old price!
Due to the comprehensive re-write the print-run has been delayed. This is not great news for most
who have already pre-ordered and are waiting patiently. For those who have forgotten to preorder last chance to pre-order has been extended Friday 12th May.

Make use of SACE
As many will be aware, there has been a major restructuring of the SACE Senior Mathematic
Curriculum starting in 2017. MASA is rewriting the Revision Guides to align with the new content and
will be presenting Year 12 workshops to assist teachers through the requirements. The SACE website
www.sace.sa.edu.au can be a source of useful information.
Cheap resources
We still have some stocks of the 2015 and 2016 Revision guides which, while not entirely in line on a
subject by subject basis, still contain excellent exercises and examples to help with lesson plans. We
can supply Mathematics Applications, Mathematical Studies and Specialist Mathematics Revision
Guides for the low price of $10.00 each. Contact the MASA office for more details:

MASA has been approached by teachers from schools where students have inadequate access to
up- to-date and properly functioning graphics calculators, a necessary appliance for success in
senior maths.
It occurs to us that our MASA connections may have some older model, good condition, used
graphics calculators they could donate to a good cause, or sell for a low price.
Those wishing to acquire or donate graphics calculators are encouraged to contact the MASA
office by phone on 08 8362 4332, fax 08 8363 9002 or email [email protected], and we
will do our best to co-ordinate.

School visits from engineering professionals!
SPE-SA would like to support you in encouraging STEM based learning. Our keen volunteers would
appreciate the opportunity to speak to your Year 9 to 12 students about the engineering
profession.
To arrange a school visit, please email your contact details to [email protected]
A wealth of energy education resources are also available at www.energy4me.org to assist
teachers
Who is SPE?
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit, professional organisation with 168,000
members worldwide. The local South Australian Section (SPE-SA) has 500 members and is run by a
team of enthusiastic volunteers. SPE’s vision is to enable the sharing of technical knowledge
amongst its members, to meet the world’s growing energy needs, in a safe and environmentally
responsible manner.
As part of our commitment to the local community, SPE-SA actively supports the promotion of
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based learning. We see this as an
investment in the next generation of talented students who will become South Australia’s future
engineers and leaders.
SPE-SA has been an avid supporter of MASA for the past two decades, through sponsorship of the
School Mathematics Competition. Over the past 30 years our volunteers have also been actively
engaged with the broader community via school visits, organisation of student / teacher workshops
and Science Alive!
Thank you to our Major Sponsors for their support at our highly successful Annual
Conference held at Urrbrae Agricultural College on Thurs 27th & Fri 28th April, 2017.
