making way for play at the bay

GOING! GOING! GONE!
MAKING WAY FOR PLAY AT THE BAY
Demolition of Glenelg Foreshore building starts this Wednesday!
City of Holdfast Bay Deputy Mayor Bob Patton says the planned demolition of the Glenelg Foreshore
building (formerly known as Scampi’s restaurant) will commence tomorrow (Wednesday 10 June) to
make way for the exciting new Glenelg Foreshore Playspace.
“From December, local and visiting families will be able to enjoy an incredible, beachfront, all-access
play experience outside the iconic Glenelg Town Hall, overlooking beautiful Glenelg beach,” Cr Patton
said.
“The Glenelg Foreshore Playspace will feature in-ground trampolines, climbing frames, a giant slide,
water play features and heaps of comfy seating – all cooled by mature shady trees, and all free!”
Cr Patton advised that the new $1.3 million Glenelg Foreshore Playspace (part-funded by a $500 000
Commonwealth Government grant):

has been designed by Wax Design in consultation with Council’s Community Development
team, and responds directly to community consultation undertaken in March 2014
is fully accessible and includes wheelchair-friendly facilities
is on schedule for completion by early December this year.
“The new Playspace responds to our community’s call for more open space on the Glenelg foreshore,
with opportunities for creative, fun, imaginative play within a natural landscape,” he said.
The two-storey foreshore building, to the immediate west of the Glenelg Town Hall, was built in the
late 1980s and has been without a long-term lessee since Scampi's restaurant went into voluntary
liquidation in 2010.
“Council explored an extensive range of options over several years and consulted the Holdfast Bay
community before resolving to clear the site and create the new Playspace,” he said.
“Although it was a challenging decision to work through, we are all very excited about what’s to come.
When the site is cleared, the iconic, heritage-listed Glenelg Town Hall will shine, once again, as an
unimpeded landmark for Glenelg Beach – and will ring with the laughter and delight of children.
“It will undoubtedly bring families to play and stay at the Bay.
“The Playspace is Stage 1 of our Glenelg Foreshore Masterplan and will complement our plans to
reimagine the Glenelg Town Hall as a central community hub. It’s exciting to see the first steps unfold
this week.”

Public toilets and showers on the Glenelg Foreshore building’s ground floor have been moved into the
rear of the Glenelg Town Hall in preparation for the demolition. The demolition is being handled by
contractors and will take about a week to complete.
Jetty Road Mainstreet Management Committee Deputy Chair Mr Con Maios said Glenelg’s traders
were looking forward to the coming summer.
“Summer in Glenelg 2015 will be all about fresh starts, with the opening of the new Partridge Street
Carpark, the Glenelg Cinema and the Glenelg Foreshore Playspace. We know Council is also working
towards reinvigorating the Glenelg Town Hall and this all works towards boosting visitor numbers and
encouraging people to play and stay at the Bay!”
“In the meantime, we’re all gearing up towards our 2015 Winter Wonderland Festival! That starts on
Saturday 4 July and will be bigger and better than last year – so it’s a great time to be a part of the
vibrant Glenelg community.”
