ID. ______________________________________________________
This is a take home assignment worth 50 points of your final grade
The assignment must be printed out and answers filled in spaces
provided, and in pencil or ink. Yes folks, the tests have to be handwritten. The take home tests are due at the final.
This assignment covers chapters 10, 17, and 18 .
Please use only the space provided. In most cases you will not need all the space provided and
should not feel compelled to fill it.
I will not grade beyond the space provided. Also please write big enough so I can read your answers.
Answers I cannot read will earn a 0. If you have to write in pencil, please make sure your answer is
readable. That means the pencil writes dark and you do not write super small.
This assignment should reflect your individual effort.
You are expected to abide by the NCSU Honor code.

Again, only handwritten assignments will be graded.
1. Identify or Describe: 20 pts.
a. of the following, which do not molt, chaetognaths, gastrotrichs, or rotifers
b. a minor clade that uses movable spines on their heads to grasp and hold prey.
c. of the following, which are eutelic, acanthocephalans, gastrotrichs or rotifers.
d. of the following, Chaetognatha, Cycliophora, Gnathostomulida, which clade maps closest to
Priapulida.
e. one difference between Gnathostomulida and Micrognathozoa.
f. two differences between Nematomorpha and Acanthocephala.
g. where Cycliophora are found.
h. the cycliophoran life cycle.
2. Rotifers and look alikes. (12 pts.) Describe the life cycle of Rotifers.
b. Give one structural similarity and difference between Rotifers and Acanthocephalans.
Similarity:
Difference
c. Your lab partner is looking at an organism but not sure if it is a rotifer or gastrotrich. Tell your lab
partner how to determine whether the organism he is examining was a gastrotrich not a rotifer? You
are viewing living animals under high powers of a stereoscope or low powers of a light microscope.
You must clearly indicate structures or behavior you would look for in a gastrotrich as well as
structures that typify a rotifer that may be missing.
d. How would you tell if the creature diagramed below was a gastrotrich or kinorhynch? Assume you
have the individual in lab so that you can watch its behavior and examine its external anatomy in
some detail. You must clearly indicate structures or behavior you would look for in a gastrotrich as
well as structures that typify a kinorhynch that may be missing.
4. 18 pts. Identify the groups diagrammed below, giving identifying characteristics of each. Possible
choices, v. Nematomorpha. x. Kinorhyncha, y. Priapulida and z. Loricifera.
I should be able from your descriptions to distinguish among the four groups pictured. You
may however use internal anatomy, ecology or behavior if such qualify as distinguishing
characteristics.
c. Also give one characteristic that is similar to structures or lifestyles of nematodes. You must use a
different characteristic for each group. So you cannot put “acoelomate” if that is appropriate in the
cells for all four groups. In other words you cannot choose the characteristics for all four groups
below. Bilateral symmetry and number of tissue layers are not acceptable traits.
