Middle School Summer School June 12-30, 2017 Attached is a description of summer school classes being offered to middle school students designed to enrich your summer! Registration begins April 24. You may register online at www.necedahschools.org or you may use the paper registration form attached. If you have any questions regarding the registration process please contact the Middle/High School Office. You may register for as many classes as you desire. Some classes fill up fast, so don’t delay! In addition to the morning sessions from 8:00-11:00, we are offering other opportunities to middle school students. See the course descriptions for more information on these classes. Please pay special attention to the dates and times of each class. Students that attend the regular morning sessions and stay for the afternoon class, will have a supervised lunch/recess break from 11:00-12:00. Free meals will be offered to everyone 18 years old and under from June 12 thru July 21 (excluding July 4th). Breakfast will be served from 7:30-8:00 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:00-11:45 a.m. Anyone wishing to eat lunch must let the office know before 9:00 each morning. You could be the next Aaron Rodgers! We will play a games such as 7-on-7 and Punt, Pass and Kick. We will also have tournaments between the different groups in the class. Teacher: Mr. Mach Grade: Entering 4-8 Time: 8:00-9:30 Let’s Get Physical-FUNdamental Training Time to shape up and ship out! All forms of training will be used to get a great look into FUNdamental training in weightlifting, plyometrics, and agility training, while employing a variety of games and competitions to utilize your new found skills. An emphasis on CORE lifts as well as movement improvement will be used. Teacher: Mr. Mach Grade: Entering 4-8 Time: 9:30-11:00 Forest Explorers Let’s explore the great outdoors including our school forest! In this class you will be able to track animals, create an experiment using real data with live animals, and identify different species by their tracks and scat. We will also be building bat houses for the school forest and monitoring animals within the school forest using our trail cam. This class is hands on and enjoyable to all students who love science and the outdoors. Teacher: Miss Crabb Grade: Entering 4-8 Time: 8:00-9:30 & 9:30-11:00 Summer School Musical Come and be a part of this year’s show, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. This is a hilarious comedy based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale by the same name. You can get involved in acting, singing, dancing, blocking, lighting, sound, and stage crew. There will be lines and songs to learn, costumes, props, dances, and loads of fun and laughter! There are two mandatory performances, both on Thursday, June 29th at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Join us! Teachers: Mr. & Mrs. Jackson Grade: Entering 5-9 Time: 8:00-9:30 Let’s Play Chess! Join us as we learn to play the game of chess! Strategy and tactics will be taught each day with time to practice with classmates as well. Weekly tournaments will be the highlight of each week. Teacher: Mr. Beaver Grade: Entering 6-8 Time: 8:00-9:30 ELA Extra! Want to boost your language and reading skills? ELA Extra will feature 3 weeks of novel reading, authoring your own Novella, and mastering grammar and literature skills using on-line sources. Head into the next grade with a few more skills under your belt and writing to be proud of. Teacher: Mrs. Sheley Grade: 7-9 Time: 8:00-9:30 & 9:30-11:00 Math Extra! Want to boost your middle school math skills and become more confident in math? Math Extra will be a self-paced opportunity to work on some of those basic skills while preparing you for future math classes. Teacher: Ms. Footitt Grade: 7-9 Time: 8:00-9:30 & 9:30-11:00 Peer Tutor Are you interested in teaching or just helping out younger students? This class teaches you strategies for working with students and provides you with practical experience working in a school setting. See Mrs. Darnell to sign up to help in an elementary class. Teacher: Mr. Becker Grade: Entering 6-12 Time: 8:00-9:30 or 9:30-11:00 Summer Band 30 minute lessons will be scheduled upon request by the student. On Thursday, June 29th there will be a full band rehearsal for 6th graders from 11:30-12:15. Sign up with Mr. Jackson no later than May 26th. Teacher: Mr. Don Jackson Grade: Entering 6-12 Time: As Scheduled (9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.) ADDITIONAL CLASSES: Outdoor Adventures Do you like bike riding and camping? Do you know how to set up a tent or build a campfire? With this class, we will go on a few outdoor adventures, including an overnight camping trip and riding the Elroy/Sparta bike trail. We will also learn how to geocache, using a GPS to find locations and go treasure hunting. We will build geocaches of our own for around the school campus. Students will need to have a bike to use for this class. Teacher: Mr. Beaver Grade: Entering 4-8 Time: 12:00-2:30 p.m. (June 12-29, Mon.-Thurs.) Weight Training A sensible approach to fundamental weight training. The CORE lifts (bench, squat, power clean, and deadlift) will be covered in detail. A program will be designed for each lifter. The Bigger, Faster, Stronger Program will be utilized for all lifters. Teachers: Mr. & Mrs. Mach Grade: Entering 8-12 Time: 2:00-5:00 p.m. (June 12-July 28, Mon.-Fri.) Training the CARDS (Committed Athletes Reaching Desired Success) Calling all Cardinal Athletes: Are you willing to put in the time necessary to improve your fitness? This class was made for YOU!! “Training the CARDS” will focus on conditioning and skill-related fitness components which include agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time, and speed training. Start your summer mornings off right with these fun and effective workouts! Necedah coaches encourage their athletes to make this part of their summer routine. Be as fit as you can be, to be the best athlete you can be! On Mondays and Wednesdays we will focus on all components of fitness while on Tuesdays and Thursdays we will focus on strength training. Basketball - Team Fundamentals Students will participate in 5 on 5 basketball games aimed at understanding and improving team basketball concepts. Both offensive and defensive team concepts will be stressed. We will work on skill development, contests, and lead up games. Teacher: Ms. Kubicek Grade: Entering 6-9 Time: 5:30-7:00 p.m. Dates: Wednesdays, June 14-July 19 Swimming Lessons Swimming Lessons are provided by certified swimming instructors at the New Lisbon Pool. Parents are responsible for transporting their child to and from the Necedah School. A bus will transport the students between Necedah and New Lisbon, leaving our school at 8:25 and returning at 11:15 a.m. During the time that students are not involved in swimming lessons, they will be involved in an organized activity supervised by Necedah School employees. Please indicate your time preference for swimming – either 9:00-10:00 or 10:00-11:00. Dates: July 3-21 (excluding July 4) Grade: K-8 Time: 8:25-11:15 a.m. Cost: $45 – Checks should be made payable to: New Lisbon City Pool and may be turned in on the first day of lessons. 6th Grade Survival Teachers will share all the tricks to making your 6th grade year successful, including organizational tips and an introduction to the 6th grade curriculum.
