What is Reconciliation?
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is the oldest continuing culture in the
world. They are the first nations people and the traditional owners of the land on which
the City of Greater Dandenong is located.
Reconciliation means bringing together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and
other Australians.
The City of Greater Dandenong is committed to reconciliation and building
relationships, respect and trust between the wider community and the Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander community.
Our Journey to Reconciliation
The City of Greater Dandenong promotes reconciliation through many of its protocols,
policies and actions.
The important step of developing a Reconciliation Action Plan for the City of Greater
Dandenong began with Council hosting a Reconciliation Action Plan workshop in 2016
in partnership with Reconciliation Australia.
What is Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan?
A Reconciliation Action Plan is a plan that converts good intentions into actions. It
focuses on achieving positive outcomes in the three areas of: Relationships,
Respect and Opportunities.
The plan aims to achieve greater equality, create social change and economic
opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
There has always been a strong and vibrant Aboriginal community in Greater
Dandenong, and we celebrate this as part as an important part of our diversity.
Greater Dandenong is a focus of service delivery and community activity for Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islanders residents in Greater Dandenong and those in the southeast region.
