HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC ACCOUNTABILITY PLAN FOR

HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC ACCOUNTABILITY PLAN
FOR STRUGGLING STUDENTS
Liberty Christian Academy exists to support parents and guardians in their biblical responsibility to
nurture and train their children. Thus, LCA provides opportunities which allow students to realize
their God-given potential and to live lives that glorify God in the spiritual, academic, social, physical
and vocational realms.
THE RATIONALE:
Liberty Christian Academy is different than other schools. We are called to represent the hands and
feet of Christ. Thus, it is our responsibility to do everything we can to foster student success.
Unfortunately, every school year, we have students that are in danger of failing one or more classes.
Consequences for failing vary from repeating a class, an entire grade, or even not graduating.
Many of these students have the ability to succeed but may not have the motivation or support to be
successful. The majority of students with low grades are not struggling with a lower academic
ability, and with that being said, we must partner with parents to provide another avenue to
encourage and support our students. These students typically have missing assignments, late work,
and/or poor study skills.
THE PROCESS:
Our plan is to add another layer of support and accountability to foster student success. This plan
gives the student additional time to work on their homework, projects, missing assignments, or to
study with qualified personnel.
We have reviewed the weekly schedule and understand that the week is already very busy. We plan
on using Saturdays from 8:30am until 11:30am. Our plan is to target/refer students that are
receiving a D’s or F’s and to allow any other student that would like to sign up prior to Saturday to
receive support. This is open to but not required for the high achieving students that needs additional
support. Administration reserves the right to review each situation individually. The referral process is
as follows:
Each Quarter
4 Week Point—Pull grades. A warning letter will be sent to every student who has 2
D’s or one F. This student will have two weeks to improve the grade. If after 2 weeks,
the grade/s is the same, a Saturday Academic Support Program will be assigned for a 3
week period.
End of Quarter—Grades are checked at the end of the quarter. If the D or F remains,
the Saturday Academic Support Program will be re-assigned for another 3 week period
continuing until the grade improves to a C or better. This will continue each quarter
throughout the school year.
ACADEMIC ACCOUNTABILITY PROGRAM (AAP)
This policy has been created to support and encourage the students to improve. We must have
parental support in this endeavor to make this program successful. We cannot sit by and watch our
kids struggle without offering support.
A Saturday Academic Support Program would consist of what may look (at first glance) like a regular
study hall, but it will be more. The instructor who supervises will have the ability to check Edline
accounts, collect work, provide tutoring or clarification for assignments, and supervise diligent
completion of missing or late assignments. Each student who is assigned to the Saturday Academic
Support Program should bring a notebook as an assignment calendar with homework listed. If the
student does not have any assignments that are outstanding, the student will have supervised
preparation and study for upcoming tests or quizzes or read a book for the AR requirement. Students
will be quiet and respectful and disruptions will not be tolerated due to the importance of the sessions
to each student’s academic success. Students who stay in the Saturday Academic Support Program
more than one, three-week session may be reviewed through Child Study or Administration to
consider other options.
THE MOTIVATION
The Saturday Academic Support Program will provide extra academic support that may be needed
for a variety of reasons. We understand this will help separate struggling students into accurate areas
of focus: is the student truly struggling academically? Or, is the student only academically apathetic?
No student would truly wish to be here on a Saturday morning, so the motivation to remove themself
from Academic Accountability would be very much in force for those who are apathetic. Those
students needing extra support will have another opportunity to receive assistance. We see this as a
win-win scenario.
By implementing this Saturday Academic Support Program, through our Academic Accountability
Program, LCA will, in the most concrete way, be honoring our Mission Statement to partner with
parents and help students realize their God given potential.
PEER MENTORING:
Any high school student that is determined to be of strong academic standing may volunteer to assist
in this program and receive community service hours for their support. Administration must approve in
advance any student who wishes to take part in this support.
SUMMARY:
1. Students with 2 D’s or one F may be assigned to the Saturday Academic Support
Program.
2. Staff consists of LCA certified teachers and possible peers to assist and help.
3. Plan is to provide accountability, grade checks, extra help, if required, and a place to
simply work quietly, increasing progress in the subject areas
4. By improving grades, students can be released from the Saturday Academic
Support Program.
5. Regular evaluations take place and students are assigned to the Saturday Academic
Support Program or released from the Saturday Academic Support Program.
6. The program is optional for any student who desires the extra help, but
required for those who fail to meet minimum academic standards.
7. This additional level of academic help will help relieve some of the weight of the
parents’ burden with an unmotivated student. “Bear one another’s burdens and so
fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
