THE NEW ENTRY PORTAL FOR TRUCKS HONOURED AT THE AQTR GALA
The Montreal Port Authority has been awarded the Grand
Prize for Excellence in the Cargo Transportation category by
Quebec’s road transportation association, the Association
québécoise du transport et des routes (AQTR), for the
successful completion of its new entry portal for trucks on Port
territory.
Located at the east entrance of the Port road, at De
Boucherville Street, the new portal covers four hectares.
There is now no other way in for the 2,500 trucks that travel
daily on Port territory to load or unload their container on the
Cast and Racine terminals, operated by Montreal Gateway
Terminals, or Maisonneuve Terminal, operated by Termont
Montreal.
The portal consists of a building equipped with optical character recognition and video
equipment for rapid identification of containers and trucks, and 27 checkpoints with a
biometric system to identify the truck drivers. In addition, the access roads to Maisonneuve
Terminal have a pedestal equipped with a voice-communication system and a secure
computer connection that enables pre-registration of the trucks heading to the terminal.
These data are sent in real time to Maisonneuve Terminal, where new truck entry and exit
access controls have also been installed.
At a construction cost of $12.6 million, of which 50% was financed by the Government of
Canada under its Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, this project became operational in March of
this year.

“I am delighted by this award that recognizes the
outstanding work of everyone who contributed to
the project’s success,” stated Sylvie Vachon,
President and Chief Executive Officer of the MPA.
“This project demonstrates our commitment to
finding lasting solutions to improve the flow of traffic
on Port territory and the adjacent road networks, to
ensure optimal control of access to our territory, to
reduce waiting time and in turn, considerably
reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
The award ceremony took place on May 26 in Quebec City during the AQTR’s 4th Grand
Prize for Excellence in Transportation Gala.
