Experience Playing Piano vs. Typing Speed Brett Smiley, Melinda Westfall, Bradley Biggs Melinda Procedure O Asked people at second lunch on A days if they played piano or not O Systematic sample – every third person starting on the first O Took them into the library to take a 30 second typing test O Typed from the same spot in a Government textbook O Told them not to fix any mistakes made Brad Brett Brett y = 0.8253x + 49.904 R = 0.2205 Brad Analysis The critical value for a sample size of 20 is 0.444. Our value for R was 0.2205, which indicates there isn’t any correlation according to our study. While there is no correlation, the minimum typing speed does fall on the lower end of piano playing experience. Likewise, the fastest typing speed belongs to someone with piano experience higher than the average number of years. The other values are pretty scattered throughout, which is why there is no correlation. Melinda Conclusion Since our R value of 0.2205 falls underneath the critical value of 0.444 for a sample size of 20, there is no correlation between typing speed and experience playing the piano. Thus, our research question has been answered. The number of years playing the piano is not related to one’s typing speed.
