Be realistic about your Work Experience

Placements cannot be created to meet specific demands. Placements are dependent
on what employers will offer – just like in real life

When on Work Experience you may not be able to do all things you would like –
would you like a pupil on a work experience placement to cut your hair, do the
architectural drawings for your new house or dispense your medicines??!!
 Accepting you into a workplace can cost employers time and money. You must be
willing to learn, participate and show initiative. Do not expect to be the centre of
attention; you will often have to do the jobs done by all new staff!

Achieving your Targets.
Simple Plan (N4)
Detailed Plan(N5)
National 4 example – simple plan:
Target: I will improve my timekeeping while on work experience.
Plan:
Each evening I will set my alarm clock to get myself up in
plenty of time. I will note what time I get to my placement, aiming
to be 10 minutes early. Each day I will record the time I arrive in
the morning and after lunch in my daily log.
National 5 example – detailed plan
Target: I will work on improving my confidence while on work
experience
Detailed plan: Before work experience I will phone my supervisor.
Each day I will practise speaking to new people. As the week
progresses I will try to start conversations. I will spend breaks and
lunches with my colleagues and chat with them. I hope to speak to
members of the public and will ask if I can answer the phones.
Resources I will need: the support of my supervisor to provide me
with opportunities to practise these skills.
Time scale: I will phone two weeks before I start. The rest I will
practise during week 23rd June – 27th June 2014
